Through self-awareness, team building, values, and communication development activities, Emerging Student Leaders will prepare you to identify and build your leadership skills, define your purpose, and create a network of support within your cohort and across Central Piedmont. Central Piedmont and Queens University Partner to Launch RoyalUp Program

Central Piedmont and Queen University announced the launch of its RoyalUp program – a new pathway to a bachelor’s degree that aims to expand college access to more students – on Friday.

Students who enroll in RoyalUp will take their first two years of classes at Central Piedmont and finish their bachelor’s degree at Queens. Students who maintain a 2.5 GPA or above are guaranteed admission as well as a $10,000 annual scholarship at Queens. This plan offers a new, cost-effective and direct pathway for Central Piedmont students who want to pursue a four-year degree.

Central Piedmont President Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer adds, “This public-private partnership is unique and will be a great benefit to students in Mecklenburg County. We are excited to offer this option and pathway to our students who will thrive at Queens, where they will enjoy small class sizes, relationships with professors and a strong surrounding community. At the same time, this partnership is a great example of the higher-education community in Charlotte working together to build more avenues to greater economic mobility.”

Student Fellows’ Opportunity for Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium

​​Central Piedmont has joined with UNC-Charlotte, Queens University, Johnson C. Smith University, and Johnson and Wales University to create the Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium (CRJC).

“The vision of the CRJC is to work towards a Charlotte community that understands its history of race and racism, believes in our shared humanity, embraces a more comprehensive narrative on race, and develops faculty, staff, and student leaders who work across our campuses towards truth, racial healing, and transformation. A key component of our TRHT Campus Center is the Racial Justice Fellows program, which empowers students on each campus to work towards this vision by building a skillset that can help to dismantle racism and achieve racial equity. Each campus will hire six Fellows to work on this project for the academic year 2020-2021.”

The Student Fellows’ two main priorities will be to research the racial history of Charlotte, with a special focus on Central Piedmont Community College (or whichever institution the Fellow attends), and leading the Racial Healing Circle programs. Students will receive training on research, presenting, and facilitating deliberative dialogues; among learning other skills and receiving support.
For their work students will be compensated with stipends which will total $2,000 for the entire year (fall 2020 – spring 2021). Applications are open now, and will close October 2nd with interviews taking place the week of October 5th.

The FAFSA is the primary form used by federal, state, and financial assistance programs to determine your eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships. Did you know you must  fill out a new FAFSA every year?

Complete your FAFSA as soon as possible, as funding can be limited – so you definitely don’t want to wait.  If you do not fill out the FAFSA, you risk losing out on money that you might be eligible for.

The FAFSA for 2021–2022 opens Thursday, October 1.

Through numerous discussions and detailed planning across all units of the college, we remain committed to providing a safe environment for our students to learn and faculty and staff members to work. Fall semester classes are being taught in multiple formats – online, hybrid, blended and face-to-face. Here are the different types:

  • Traditional (regular in-person class meetings with very little, if any, online instruction)

FERPA: Annual Notification of Student Rights

Annual Notification of Rights Under FERPA:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords you the following rights with respect to your education records when you turn 18 years old or enter a post-secondary institution at any age:

  • The right to inspect and review your education records. To review records, students and former students may contact Student Records, present valid photo identification, and request in writing to review the record. Central Piedmont will provide access to the record within 30 days.
  • The right to request amendment of education records that you believe are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of your privacy rights under FERPA.You may question information in your educational records that you believe to be incorrect or inaccurate. This request must be in writing and must be submitted to the Dean of Admissions, Registration, Records, and Graduation. All requests for corrections will be acted upon within 30 work days of receipt of the request. If the dean can verify that such data are, in fact, in error, appropriate corrections will be made. You will be notified in writing when the correction has been completed. If an error cannot be readily substantiated, the request will be referred to an Ad Hoc Hearing Committee appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs. After you have had the opportunity to present the case to the hearing committee, the committee will render a decision in writing, stating the reasons for its decision.
  • The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in your education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.Directory information may be disclosed without your written consent. Central Piedmont Community College has declared the following information to be directory information: your name; your city of residence; dates of attendance; major field of study or program; credentials earned and dates awarded.
  • One exception which permits disclosure without your consent is disclosure to school officials who have a legitimate educational interest in the record. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official is performing a task that is specified in his or her position description or by a contract agreement, performing a task related to your education, or performing a task related to your discipline.
  • The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Central Piedmont Community College to comply with the requirements of FERPA.

Virtual Counseling Services: Mindfulness Series

Have you been looking for a way to cope with the daily stressors of being a student? Join Counseling Services for online sessions to learn how to manage stress with mindfulness. Research shows that practicing mindfulness is beneficial in many areas, including:

  • better sleep
  • lower stress levels
  • improved attention
  • dealing with depression and anxiety

Through practice and discussion, learn to strengthen your ability to “begin again” in the present moment. Whether you are brand new to mindfulness or have been practicing for years, these sessions are for you. Designed specifically for students, each session focuses on a different area of mindfulness practice. Attend one or all sessions.

All sessions are on Thursday from 10:30–11:30 a.m.

SGA Elections: Cast Your Vote Next Week!

Elections for new officers of the Central Piedmont’s Student Government Association Executive Committee are taking place next week! SGA leaders serve for a full-year term, representing the needs and interests of all students at Central Piedmont. They provide feedback to college administrators and committees, support student organizations with funding and resources, and support the campus SGA Councils in their work on all of Central Piedmont’s campuses, and even in our remote learning environment.

International Education Prevalent at NC Community Colleges

NC State’s Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research recently released its International Education at North Carolina Community Colleges report, and Central Piedmont’s efforts in providing international education opportunities to its students were featured in the report’s findings.

The report is a collaboration between the Belk Center and the North Carolina Community College System Office and uses data collected during the 2019-2020 academic year to explore how North Carolina community colleges address the system’s mission to “develop a globally and multi-cultural competent workforce.”

The report provides a broad overview of what sorts of international education opportunities are available at NC community colleges and suggests that international education is much more prevalent at NC community colleges than national data indicates.

Central Piedmont has been offering study abroad experiences to its students and members of the local community in for more than 20 years. Each year, during spring break and the summer term, Central Piedmont faculty members lead short-term study abroad excursions to a variety of locations across the globe, including: Ecuador, Italy, Greece, Japan, Thailand, Peru, Tanzania, and many others.

Since the college’s 2020 study abroad programs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Global Learning Office has turned its attention to:

  • providing students with virtual, international exchange experiences
  • encouraging students to apply for the Scholars of Global Distinction program
  • ensuring the college’s curriculum includes a global learning perspective

My name is Jamie Roldan-Moquete, Executive Director for the Campus Activities Board (CAB) for the 2020-2021 academic year. CAB is a student-led organization that provides social, educational, and recreational events and activities. 

As an organization that serves the Central Piedmont Campus Community, our goal is to offer opportunities to strengthen student engagement and enhance your college experience. Although we would love to be on campus interacting with each other face-to-face, we’ve worked hard throughout the summer transitioning to a 100% virtual environment. The best part is we can now stay connected across all Central Piedmont campuses.

Advisory: Contractors enhancing security systems on Central Campus Sept 8 – 18

Contractors with Security 101 will be on Central Campus, Sept. 8 – 18, between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., installing ID card access mechanisms to several classroom and common area doors located in all of Central Campus’s buildings, except Giles, Zeiss, the New Classroom Building, and Worrell.

Card access is being installed on multiple doors to enhance security measures and ensure only individuals with an official Central Piedmont ID are granted access to specific areas located inside Central Piedmont’s buildings.

Contractors will be using loud hand tools, such as power saws, to complete the installations, which includes partially cutting the door frame and adding the electronical components needed to lock/unlock the door when authorized.

We are aware some classes will be in session on these days/times. Crews have been asked to make every effort to limit any noise disruptions. Since the majority of Central Piedmont courses are being conducted online this semester, the number of classes impacted by this work is expected to be minimal.

North Carolina Scholars of Global Distinction Program

Interested in becoming a global citizen? Join the NC Scholars of Global Distinction Program.

This honors program is a partnership between UNC Chapel Hill and other NC Community Colleges which prepares students for the global job market. Through NC Scholars of Global Distinction, students are able to enhance leadership, communication and presentation skills. Students who complete the program are exposed to globalized coursework, international events and a global immersion. These components not only benefit students educationally, but also impact them personally.

Virtual Student Resources Week

Student Life is excited to host the first virtual Student Resources Week. We recognize the challenges that can come with taking classes remotely. Join us for Student Resources week, September 8 through 11, to learn from the many different resources the college offers to help you succeed as a student at Central Piedmont.

Throughout the week, you can watch videos about each support resource on FlipGrid. In their video, each support service will introduce themselves and what they offer. Student Life staff will also be available on Zoom each day from 3:30–4:30 p.m. to answer your questions.

As part of participating in Student Resources Week, you can enter to win one of three Apple AirPods with wired charging case.

Advisory: Gov. Cooper Moves to Reopening Phase 2.5

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced Tuesday, Sept. 1, he is moving the state into Phase 2.5. Businesses like gyms and museums in Mecklenburg County and across the state closed since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic can reopen Friday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m.

In summary, the Governor’s order states:

  • Gyms and other indoor exercise facilities can open at 30 percent capacity.
  • The limits on mass gatherings will increase to 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors.
  • Playgrounds can open. Museums and aquariums can open at 50 percent capacity.
  • Capacity limits at restaurants and personal care businesses like hair and nail salons will stay the same.
  • Some places will remain closed, including bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, indoor entertainment & amusement parks. Large venues will still be subject to the mass gathering limits.
  • The statewide age requirement for face coverings includes children as young as five.

Fall semester classes are being taught in multiple formats — online, hybrid, blended, and face-to-face. (Hybrid and blended courses include both online and some face-to-face instruction.) The full 16-week semester began Aug. 10. Short session fall classes begin Sept. 14, Oct. 14, and Nov. 11.

For students who attend classes on campus, please read the Student Guide to Returning to Campus carefully. It will be important you follow all of the safety practices detailed in the guide. These include wearing a face covering, keeping a social distance from others, washing your hands frequently, self-monitoring for possible COVID-19 symptoms, and staying home if you feel ill at all.

Employees are encouraged to read the Guide for Returning to Campus to learn how to best keep their teammates and students as healthy and safe as possible going forward.

Class registration for the fall term is ongoing through Nov. 10.
