Family Resource Center Scavenger Hunt: Practice Self-Care and Win Prizes

mother walking with her daughter on campusAs we continue to move forward through the pandemic, the Family Resource Center wants to ensure we are all taking care of ourselves. We’ve comprised a “self-care scavenger hunt” for you to complete.

Take the opportunity to engage with Central Piedmont’s resources as we continue to work remotely. You can still prioritize your self-care  during these unprecedented times – and we’re here to help.

Don’t miss out on the chance to win self-care booklets, Central Piedmont swag AND free gift cards! All participants who complete a  Scavenger Hunt Sheet will receive a prize while supplies last.

Finish Faster with 8-Week Courses this Spring Semester

Central Piedmont has remained dedicated to discovering innovative ways to help you persist and complete your studies. The college has been hard at work, reviewing best practices for how students across the state and country are achieving success (and completing!) within accelerated, remote learning environments during COVID-19.

Our Findings

What we’ve learned is students have higher success rates in compressed, short-session courses, compared to full-semester length (16-week) courses. This is especially true among part-time students. Students in short-session courses have demonstrated improved time management skills, better focus and motivation, and improved knowledge retention.

With this in mind, Central Piedmont will offer more eight-week learning sessions in spring 2021.

Pilot programs
The college is currently identifying which programs and courses will be included in the spring short-session pilot program. To date, the following programs and courses have been recommended for the pilot (others may be added):

  • Associate in Arts (Students in the 2020-2021 49erNext cohort as well as other AA courses)
  • Automotive Systems Technology
  • Business Administration
  • Collision Repair & Refinishing
  • Criminal Justice Technology
  • Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technology
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Interior Design
  • Medical Office Administration
  • Office Administration
  • Simulation & Game Development
  • Welding Technology.

How it will work

Beginning Jan. 11, students would still return to campus for face-to-face courses, online courses, or a combination of both in-person and online courses; however, students enrolled in the above programs would have the option of enrolling in: traditional 16-week courses AND/OR multiple short-session (eight-week) courses scheduled during the first eight-week session of the semester (Jan. 11 – March 5) or during the second eight-week session of the semester (March 15 – May 11). By enrolling in short-session courses, these students would be able to earn the same amount of credits in less time.

Student benefits

The short-session learning schedule has a number of proven benefits. If you’re enrolled in one of the above programs this spring, and decide to enroll in multiple eight-week courses during the first and second half of the semester, you will be able to:

  • identify more classes that better fit your schedule (both 16-week and eight-week sessions will be available)
  • experience a break between March 6 and 14, allowing you more time to adjust your schedules ahead of the next eight-week session
  • experience constant pacing from term to term
  • focus on fewer classes during each eight-week period
  • earn stackable credentials to demonstrate your academic/career pathway to future employers
  • have access to a quality education at the same great price
  • complete your educational goals on time

We hope offering more eight-week, short-session classes contributes to your success, providing you with more learning options that meet your busy schedule as you strive to achieve your academic goals and conquer possibility at Central Piedmont!

Central Piedmont’s Overcash Gallery Presents Artists Monique Luck and Renea Gaete

Monique Luck

Mixed media artist, Monique Luck artfully arranges collage pieces in a desired way, all the while contemplating how simple it would be if we could rearrange the pieces of life in a similar fashion. Her muse is the human figure in mixed media. Monique’s work evokes an emotive response speaking to personal loss. While misfortune may be unavoidable, it remains a common thread uniting us all. We live through a time of fear and uncertainty threatening to tear us apart, but by coming together we, like Monique’s artwork, form a cohesive and harmonious picture.

Monique’s goal is to foster a sense of unity capable of transcending cultural differences and social divides. Part of her exhibition will feature an interactive wall. Using magnetic paint and handmade paper, gallery visitors and students will be able to write a memory or thought on the piece of paper and adhere it to the wall. By the end of the exhibit this will become a collage of memories from all of us at Central Piedmont.

Rene Gaete

Central Piedmont Community College’s Overcash Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition, titled “Sill Life,” by René Gaete, Jan. 11 – March 18, on the college’s Central Campus.

Chilean artist René Gaete’s work emits a tone of mystery and longing drawing the viewer into the scene. Sparking discourse, his compositions and techniques echo elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, Baroque and Abstraction. The figures are recognizable as human beings, yet seem to be echoes of the past, like an imprint or a dream.

Straining between a sense of control and spontaneity René combines these two motivations together with an expert hand. Human forms seem to fleet in and out of focus bending the confines of time and space, giving the illusion of active movement in still life forms. “Still Life” is an exhibition that links the past to the present, the old to the new, bonding painting ideals in a novel way.

Advisory: Gov. Cooper extends Phase 3 until at least Dec. 4

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced earlier today (Nov. 10) Phase 3 of statewide COVID-19 pandemic restrictions will remain in effect until at least Dec. 4.

With Thanksgiving two weeks away, Gov. Cooper said everyone in North Carolina must focus on keeping themselves and their friends and neighbors safe. “We are on shaky ground as we head into Thanksgiving,” Cooper said. “We must avoid getting together especially indoors.”

Cooper announced a new executive order that reduces the limit on indoor gatherings from 25 people to only 10. It will go into effect on Friday, November 13 and will be in place through Friday, December 4.

The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services reported 2,582 new cases today.

In Phase 3, which began Oct. 2, bars, entertainment venues, movie theaters, and large outdoor venues were allowed to reopen with firm capacity restrictions.

Be in Central Piedmont’s Next Advertising Campaign

Students, we need your help! We are creating an advertising campaign that showcases the amazing dedication of our nontraditional students. Our nontraditional students are those who may have waited a few more years after high school to attend college, or who are coming back to continue their education after working for a while. These students are typically out on their own and juggling the demands of college work and jobs, perhaps raising children, etc.

If you are a nontraditional student – in any program at Central Piedmont – and would like to volunteer for this campaign, please fill out this casting formOnce the forms are reviewed you may be contacted about the possibility of being included in the college’s next marketing campaign.

Please complete the form by Sunday, November 22.

Please remember:

  • To include your full name on the form.
  • By submitting these files you are agreeing to let Central Piedmont talk to you further about the possibility of featuring you in marketing materials including, but not limited to, commercials, online, print, and outdoor.
  • Submission of this form does NOT automatically mean you will be chosen – this will be determined by such things as number of submissions, story themes, etc.
  •  Submission of the form does mean you agree to have a virtual call with the production team to get more information from you if chose.
