CPCC Transfer Student is the First to Receive Queens’ Presidential Scholarship

For the first time in history, Queens University of Charlotte awarded a transfer student with the prestigious Presidential Scholarship. Kailee McKenzie Smethers, a graduate from Central Piedmont Community College plans to study interior architect and design. This scholarship covers full tuition for students with superior academic and leadership achievement. Congratulations, Kailee! Watch Kailee’s reaction as we surprised her with the news.

Applications Available for 2018-2019 Ruth G. Shaw Scholars

Dr. Ruth Shaw, Central Piedmont Community College’s (CPCC) second college president, Ruth G. Shaw Scholars with Ms. Shawmade a gift to establish the Ruth G. Shaw Women’s Leadership Program in partnership with the CPCC Foundation and Student Life. This unique student program aims to:

·        Connect women students to one another and to a supportive network of community mentors.

·        Inspire women students to assume positions of leadership and to celebrate their individual and collective achievements.

·        Nurture female student leaders by encouraging and demonstrating critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving strategies.

·        Foster a deeper awareness of the many roles women play and their contributions to society.

This year-long scholarship program is limited to 10 female students who will participate in sessions, both with RGS mentors and separately with scholars. Through monthly luncheons and guided conversations with community mentors, the Ruth G. Shaw Women’s Leadership Program offers:

·        Interaction with college leaders, faculty, staff and alumnae.

·        Personal and professional skill development.

·        Hands-on leadership development.

·        Recognition of achievement. As a culminating event and in collaboration with faculty, staff and mentors, participants will plan and execute an annual spring capstone presentation about their experience in the program.

Students are required to be enrolled in both the Fall 2018 & Spring 2019 semesters. Applications for 2018-2019 are now available, and due by April 23.

Grainger Tools for Tomorrow Scholarship. Application Due March 31

Students must be full time and graduating in 2019.

1. Grainger application form.

2. Letter of recommendation from professor, teacher or advisor.

3. Transcript demonstrating GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

4. 200-300 words on why you chose to study skilled trades/public safety, how your achievements and/or

leadership roles have helped you grow individually and your future career goals.

5. A list of clubs, activities, accomplishments, leadership roles held and years involved, including those related to your field of study or military job experience.

WINGS Scholarship.  Application Due 04/02/2018

Eligible applicants who meet the following criteria will be considered for a scholarship:
* Have a clear sense of what they want to achieve through education and a plan for doing it.
* Have successfully completed some post-high school studies with a grade-point average of 2.5 whether they are currently enrolled or not.
* Have shown through their studies, and in other ways, that they are serious about their personal and career goals.
* Are U.S. citizens
* Are at least 25 years old
* Meet eligibility criteria to receive financial aid
* Are the major source of financial support for themselves and/or their children, or need retraining in order to achieve higher earnings or greater financial security.

WINGS Bridge Scholarship.  Application Due 04/02/2018

A qualified candidate for a WINGS Bridge scholarship.

  • Has a clear sense of what she wants to achieve through education and has a plan for doing so.
  • Has successfully completed some post-high school studies and achieved at least the level of sophomore with a grade-point average of 3.0, whether currently enrolled or not.
  • Is pursuing her first bachelor’s degree directly related to her chosen career plan.
  • Has shown not only in her studies but in other ways that she is serious about her personal and career goals.
  • Is a U.S. citizen or has permanent resident status.
  • Is at least 25 years old.
  • Meets eligibility criteria to receive financial aid.
  • Is the major source of financial support for herself and/or her children, or needs retraining in order to achieve higher earnings or greater financial security.
  • Is graduating from (or graduated in the last 6 months from) Central Piedmont Community College.
  • Wants to continue her studies at Johnson C. Smith University, Queens University of Charlotte, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
  • Is eager to work with a mentor during the course of a WINGS scholarship, and to talk openly with her about successes, problems and plans.  Active participation in the mentoring part of the scholarship is a condition of scholarship renewal.

 

Ruth G. Shaw Scholars Applications Available

Applications are now available for interested female students who wish to apply to the 2017-2018 Ruth G. Shaw Scholars program. This fantastic learning experience and leadership development program is open to students who will be enrolled during the entire 2017-2018 academic year.

The program is designed to:

Scholarship Opportunity for STEM and Allied Health Students

As part of the Strengthening the NCSG Partnership with the NCCCS to Enhance STEM-Based Learning program, NC Space Grant (NCSG) is offering a competitive scholarship opportunity for community college students majoring in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines at any campus in the NC Community College System (NCCCS). These $2,500 scholarships are competitive awards based on academic merit.

The Community College STEM Scholarship award will provide students with $2,500 in their sophomore year (Spring 2017 semester) as long as the student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA and meets other requirements of the award. This scholarship is based on academic merit and potential for successful matriculation into a 4-year degree program.  Awards will be distributed at the end of the semester pending the submission of required reports/projects.

Scholarships for New German Students

The German Language and Culture Foundation has provided five scholarships for books for new CPCC German students for the fall semester 2016. To apply for this scholarship, write 10 sentences why you want to take German and send it by August 10 to the German Discipline Chair Daniela Weinert (daniela.weinert@cpcc.edu). Eligible for the scholarships are all new students enrolled for a fall face-to-face class.

2016-2017 WINGS (Women Initiating and Nurturing Growth Through Scholarships)

CPCC is proud to announce the offering of the WINGS Scholarship (Women Initiating and Nurturing Growth Through Scholarships) program to eligible female students. The WINGS Scholarship is a scholarship program for women at Charlotte-area colleges and universities and women who are 25 or older who need help overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving their goals. A woman who receives a WINGS Scholarship has a clear educational and career plan and has proven her ability to accomplish not only academic work, but also her ability to do well in other facets of life.

The WINGS Scholarship not only provides financial support, but also offers something potentially even more valuable: mentors. Two or more seasoned, active, executive or professional women, chosen for the specific expertise they can bring to the recipient’s goals, are assigned as mentors to every WINGS recipient. These mentors provide recipients with their own experience, perspectives, counsel, networks and personal support. Throughout the year, recipients meet with their mentors. Attendance is required at the WINGS Scholarship Luncheon which honors all recipients and graduates.

Eligible applicants who meet the following criteria will be considered for a scholarship:

* Have a clear sense for what they want to achieve through education and a plan for doing it.

Ceremony for German Study Abroad Scholarship Winners

On March 3, CPCC students Margaret Dugger, Frederic Hoeffler, Cheyenne Jarrell and Madison Kaiser were named the 2015 German Language & Culture Foundation Scholarship recipients. Each student will receive a $2,000 2015 German Scholarship Winnersscholarship will pay for their study abroad trip to Germany this June.

The gift to the college reinforces the GLCF’s commitment to supporting projects that help create long-term friendships and promote a better understanding between the people of German-speaking countries and the Charlotte metro region. Charlotte is a mecca for German-based business operations; the Queen City’s German companies employ more than 15,000 people across the region.

At the ceremony the students received congratulations from the president of the German Language and Culture Foundation, Brigitte Hartenstein and sponsors from the companies K&L Gates, Weima, ParkerPoe, and Leser LLC.

Skyline Run to be Held April 25

The 20th Anniversary CPCC Charlotte Skyline Run will be held on April 25, 2015. An estimated 1,000 plus runners are expected to attend this family fun event which will support student scholarships and other student needs. The Skyline Run 2015Skyline Run will feature four components which include a 5K run, Walk for Health, Family Fun Run (1 mile), and Charlotte 5K Baby Jogger Championship. Kids will enjoy the Family Fun Run and spending time in the Kids Zone.
