Construction on Central Campus to Impact Charlottetowne Ave.

Construction of the Charlottetowne at 5th Classroom Building, on Central Campus will require the closure of one lane of Charlottetowne Avenue from Elizabeth Avenue to 5th Street. Closure of the right lane, the lane closest to the building site, will begin Feb. 24, and last about six weeks.

The sidewalk along Charlottetowne will be shifted into the closed lane and separated from traffic by protective barriers. Traffic delays during peak times are expected. Please plan accordingly. Thank you for your patience.

  1. Volunteer Fair (Levine Campus): (Wed., Feb. 19, 11:30am-1pm) Stop by and meet local nonprofits and community organizations! These organizations have multiple opportunities for students to gain service hours and give back to their community. Contact: lindsey.graves@cpcc.edu for more information.
  2. Business Etiquette Lunch Training (Central Campus): (Thu., Feb. 20, 11:30am-12:30pm) Professional work settings may require you to join your future boss for a meal. Do you have the skills to eat while speaking professionally? Wonder which fork to use? Do you need to practice your “small talk” with strangers? Students will have free lunch in the Van Every Culinary building at Central Campus the following week, and this mandatory etiquette training session is required the week before the lunch.   3. Service In Action – Reedy Creek Elementary (Off-Campus): (Sat., Feb. 22, 10am-2pm) Students will participate in the festival for parents and students at the school. Volunteers will work in partners to run the exhibits, teachers will be present to guide and explain.   4. Recreation Volleyball (Central Campus): (Mon., Feb. 24, 1pm-3pm) Come on out to the Worrell gymnasium and play some volleyball! Drop-in style of play with teams based on who shows up first.   5. Black History Month Trivia (Harper Campus): (Tue., Feb. 25, 11:30am-1pm) Join us at the Harper 4 First Floor Atrium to show off your history skills and learn some great Black History Month facts!

Central Piedmont Theatre is Excited to Present “Chess, The Musical!”

“Chess” is a rock musical with music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Richard Nelson based on an idea by Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War–era chess tournament between two grandmasters from America and the USSR and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.”

“One of the best rock scores ever produced. This is an angry, difficult, demanding and rewarding show.” – TIME

 

 

 

Chess opens Friday, February 14th at 7:30pm in Halton Theater. Shows run from February 14 – 23.

Get Plugged In: Hundreds of Unique Experiences Available for Students

Central Piedmont offers you a ton of ways to get involved, make friends, do good for others, and have fun. While we offer hundreds of unique experiences on each campus during the semester (calendar of events), here are the Top 5 Ways to Plug-In This Week.

  1. Student Resource Day (City View Campus):  Join us on Thursday, February 6th (11am-1pm) where representatives from several student service departments will be present and available to speak with you! Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the services you need.
  2. Level Up Personal Enrichment (Levine Campus): Level Up is an exciting new enrichment series developed to provide students opportunities for personal growth beyond the classroom. Through various interactive activities and training sessions, students will gain a greater awareness of self and develop a deeper understanding of their impact on others. If you’re ready to challenge yourself beyond your comfort zone, meet new people and begin a guided journey towards self-awareness and personal development, this program is for you! Sessions held from 11am – 1pm on the first Friday of each month of the school year beginning in September and ending in April. There are 20 spots available and students will be required to register on a first-come, first-serve basis. Certificates of completion will be awarded to students who complete all 8 sessions. Remaining Spring Semester Meeting Dates: 2/7, 3/6, 4/3. Contact Nakeshia Staley to register.
  3. Black History Film Screening (Levine Campus): We invite students, faculty, and staff to join us on Monday, February 10 (3:30pm-5:30pm) and February 12 (3:30pm-5:30pm) to watch the movie “When They See Us”.  This will allow the opportunity to learn, discuss, and reflect on the criminalization of black and brown bodies, history of black suppression, and current social systems. A discussion and reflection will follow each episode. Students who attend at least two of the screenings will be credited 3 hours for community engagement through the Office of Service-Learning.
  4. Gender Identity Pronouns (Cato Campus): How would you like to be identified? Join us in Cato III Atrium on Monday, February 10 (10am-1pm) to create your own pronoun button and get to know your peers in the process.
  5. Seat @ the Table (Central Campus): Visit us on Wednesday, February 12 (12:30-1:30pm) for our Seat at the Table program.  It is a program created for students, faculty, and staff to have conversations that relate to their every-day lives outside of work and the classroom. Friendships, mental illness, love, forgiveness, and sex are among the many topics that will be held at the “dinner table” on Wednesdays at 12:30pm in Overcash 242. Barbara Rizza Mellin captures the simple elegance of natural objects in Chinese Brush Painting, the real and apparent spontaneity of the process in which a few strokes capture the beauty of a blossom, the fragility of a fallen leaf. Her works combine elements of water color paintings and calligraphic line drawings, and, yet, have their own unique look and style. Illuminate by the ArtPop Street Gallery Class of 2018

Through Illuminate, Central Piedmont’s Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery partners with the ArtPop Street Gallery’s Class of 2018 in the shared vision of bringing art to students, faculty, and the community. This collective showcase of eclectic pieces created in paint, collage, photography, stoneware, and glass reflects the diversity and depth of Charlotte’s local art. Some of the works are recognizable as those that were lit up over the city, while others are new endeavors. All reflect the aspiration and passion of the artist.

Frieze by artist Tom Stanley through December 18, 2020

   

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

Gov. Roy Cooper Visits College, Asks For More Emergency Grants For Students

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, met on Central Piedmont’s Central Campus Wednesday with faculty, staff, and students to share exciting updates about the Finish Line Grant, an emergency grant program originally announced by Cooper in July 2018.

College is a serious financial undertaking. The Finish Line Grant is designed to assist community college students in addressing financial situations that would prevent them from continuing or completing their program of study or credential. Students facing financial hardship may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to cover eligible expenses per semester.

During the event, Gov. Cooper announced that in North Carolina, 3,000 community college Finish Line Grants have been awarded to date. He added, “It’s amazing how a small amount of money can make a big difference in the life of a student who is trying really hard and is having to pay tuition and fees to try and better themselves in order to get over the hump.”

Too often, financial hardships such as unexpected healthcare costs, childcare expenses, or car and transportation issues prevent students from achieving their academic goals. Fortunately, there are many types of financial aid available to help pay for college.

Lexine Merrill, a Central Piedmont student and Finish Line Grant recipient, echoed the governor’s sentiments. “In one week, I ended up with $1,300 in medical bills and car repairs. I had no idea what to do and nowhere to turn. But then a friend mentioned her experience with the Finish Line Grant, so I applied. I sobbed grateful tears when I learned I was approved. The Finish Line Grant relieved the financial burdens that were weighing heavily on me. It allowed me the opportunity to continue moving forward, toward my finish line.

Students facing an unexpected financial emergency can get connected to a variety of FREE resources through Single Stop, to help them stay focused on their academic goals.

North Classroom Building ready to welcome students on Central Campus

Central Piedmont is excited to announce that its new North Classroom Building, located on Central Campus, is open and ready to welcome students in time for the spring 2020 semester.

If you’re taking classes on Central Campus this spring, please be sure to check your schedule to see if you have any classes in the North Classroom Building. (If so, the class location will be listed as “North Clas” on your schedule.)

Parking at Central Campus – Park in Designated Parking Spaces

Tow truckPlease remember to park your vehicle only in a Central Piedmont Community College parking facility when you come to Central Campus. Do not park alongside streets near campus, at businesses adjacent to campus (including Bojangles’ restaurant), nor in the parking areas at one of the nearby city/county parks and greenway.

All Central Campus parking decks are open. The decks and parking lots provide ample parking spaces for every student and employee who wishes to drive to campus.

Should you choose to park any place other than on campus, please know your vehicle could be ticketed, booted, or towed. If any of these occur, the college will not be able to assist you.

If you drive to Central Campus, please park on campus, and avoid an unnecessary expense.

 

Memorial Stadium Construction to Impact Parking at Central Campus

Please note, the renovation and re-construction of the American Legion Memorial Stadium adjacent to Central Campus will begin this Thursday, Sept. 19, at 10 p.m. The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is undertaking this large-scale project.

As a result of this project, the following parking lots and parking spaces will be impacted or closed, beginning Thursday night:

  • The majority of Lot 7, located at the corner of North Kings Dr. and East Seventh St., will be closed. (Some spaces near the culinary arts center will remain open.)
  • The stadium’s accessible parking spaces on Armory Drive, near Charlottetowne Ave. will be closed.

For alternative parking options, please consult the Central Campus Parking map. As a reminder, Deck 1, located at the corner of East Seventh St. and Charlottetowne Ave., is now open and available for use. Also, additional accessible parking areas are available in Deck 1 and in Lot 5, near Central High.

We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter. Please plan accordingly, and give yourself plenty of time to park your vehicle and get to class. If you have any questions, please contact Central Piedmont Facilities at 704.330.6000.

Central Campus Door Unlock Schedule

In recent months, the Central Campus has experienced a number of situations in the early morning hours involving people who have come onto college property without a legitimate purpose. College Security Services is concerned these situations could pose a danger to college employees, students or visitors – as well as to college property.

As a result, changes have been made to the Central Campus exterior door unlocking schedule. As you recall, the college’s hours of operation are 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday. On weekdays, building exterior doors will now remain locked until 7 a.m.

Students who need to arrive early on Central Campus will be directed to the Overcash Commons Elizabeth Ave. entrance, which will unlock at 6 a.m. This will allow College Security Services to provide students shelter from the weather and access to facilities while waiting for the college buildings to unlock at 7 a.m.

If a building is scheduled for a 7 a.m. class, the exterior doors will unlock at 6:30 a.m. for student access. Employees would continue to use their access card to get into the building beginning at 6 a.m.
