Library Offers Contact-less Holds

The Library has been accessible remotely since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now offer physical materials through contact-less holds.

Students and faculty/staff can search for and request items through the Library catalog – making it easy and convenient to locate the materials you need. Items can be picked up at either Central, Levine, or Merancas campuses or the library will mail your request directly to your home.

Students can select delivery options during the request process. Do not go to campus until you receive confirmation that your request has been processed. Requested materials will be managed by using lockers that students can access directly.

Locker locations:

  • Central: front vestibule of the library (OLD ATC)
  • Levine: in the vestibule between Levine 2 and 3 (behind the flag circle)
  • Merancas: in the Claytor building in the alcove between the Registration and Information desks

Advisory: In-person classes suspended; remote student services available

The college has suspended in-person classes in an effort to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. We’re partnering with local and state leaders on this comprehensive effort that’s requiring immediate action in every community. We’re doing all we can to keep our students, faculty, staff, and community as safe as possible. Please understand that the situation remains fluid, and we really appreciate your patience and flexibility.

Important Reminders

As a reminder, spring break for students has been extended one week, until March 23. The college is open but students should not report to campus.

Please remember: The short sessions of classes that were originally scheduled to begin March 16 have been moved to start next week on Monday, March 23. Registration for these 4-week and 8-week short sessions has been extended to March 22. Eligible students can use financial aid to buy books and supplies online for the second short session courses at Central Piedmont’s Barnes & Noble College bookstores. Since these are short session courses, it’s especially important to log in as soon as your classes start and begin work.

On March 23, the majority of our courses will resume online. Students enrolled in these classes should start receiving communication from instructors with details about how we will work to help you achieve your academic goals the best we can during this unprecedented situation. Check your college email often for communication from your instructors and the college concerning your classes next week.

Online Resources

The college has created a comprehensive Web page with resources to help serve students’ educational needs and provide tools for working and collaborating online.

During the coronavirus situation, Charter Communications is temporarily offering free access to Spectrum Internet. Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students, faculty, and staff who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. To enroll call 1.844.488.8395.

Campus Services and Access

 Student-facing offices will remain operational remotely to support you during this time. All student services are available online or by phone, and dedicated staff and faculty will respond to emails, voicemails and online inquiries as soon as possible. Please be patient as we all navigate this transition together.

  • The Academic Learning Center will continue to provide free online tutoring services to curriculum-level students. Student can schedule appointments online, call 704.330.6474 or email alc@cpcc.edu for more information.

 

  • Counseling Services will continue to address the needs for Pre-Health Program advisement, Probation and Suspension students, and personal counseling through phone and WebEx appointments. Please email counseling@cpcc.edu to request further information. Students experiencing a mental health crisis should call 911.

 

  • Students who need enrollment help or have general questions can contact First Year Experience. Please email fye@cpcc.edu or call 704.330.6100.

 

  • The Library is open virtually and available to provide online, email, text or chat support to students. Visit the Library’s website to learn more about availability and services.

 

  • Both the college’s Information Center (704.330.2722) and Information Technology Services Help Desk (704.330.5000 / helpdesk@cpcc.edu) are open by phone and email during weekdays. Please submit questions online here. Students experiencing issues accessing technology can call the ITS Help Desk.

 

Federal Work Study Employees

Federal Work-Study (FWS) employees will continue to be paid monthly during the emergency period if they are unable to work due to college restrictions. The Financial Aid office will determine the total monthly Federal Work Study pay amount on an individual basis. Prior monthly Federal Work Study hours earned during the 2019-20 academic period will be considered.

 Graduation Ceremonies

We know that graduation ceremonies are on the minds of our students who are completing programs this semester. We are working to determine the best course of action and will update you as soon as we can.

On-Campus Events

By recommendation of Gov. Cooper, college-related events and large gatherings will be cancelled or postponed through April 30. Several departments are exploring remote learning methods and virtual options for programs. Students participating in college affiliated programs, groups, and clubs will be contacted directly with updates on virtual alternatives as they become available.

It is extremely important to stay connected and informed during this time. Visit the college’s COVID-19 Web page to review all announcements and instructions.

Again, please ensure you monitor your college email often as we will update conditions as soon as the information becomes available. We strongly recommend downloading the Central Piedmont Mobile app for your phone from the App store or the Google Play app store. This is a convenient way to access news, Blackboard, MyCollege, and your college email account. Finally, please connect with Central Piedmont social media. This is a fast, easy way to stay up-to-date.

This is new territory for the college, but we remain flexible in discovering ways to help our students complete the semester and to keep the college operating. We appreciate the patience of our students and their families as well as Central Piedmont faculty and staff as we work to preserve the health, safety, and academic needs of our students.

COVID-19 – Spring Break Extended for Central Piedmont Students

Central Piedmont is working hard to monitor and follow local, state, and federal public health recommendations regarding COVID-19 or novel coronavirus. The college vows to do its part to limit the spread and impact of the virus, while continuing to serve the educational needs of our students and community.

Central Piedmont will remain open as we adjust how our students learn and how our employees work. The college has decided to extend spring break – for students only – for an extra week, until Monday, March 23. Students should not come to campus next week.

During the week ahead, faculty and staff will work together quickly to identify which classes can be successfully moved from in-person instruction to an online or alternative delivery method by March 23.

  1. Service-In-Action Event: Children’s Theatre (Off-Campus): (Wed, March. 11, 9 am-11am and 11am-1pm)  Student volunteers will assist in ushering in school groups attending the playhouse to watch the performance. They are welcome to watch most of the performance, and then at the conclusion, will assist in ushering the school groups back outside to their buses. Ushers are asked to wear a print-free white top and black bottoms or a Central Piedmont shirt. Volunteers will be indoors and will be able to store their coats and bags if necessary. **5 volunteers requested at each shift. Please sign up here.

Construction at Merancas Campus

Construction on the new Merancas Campus classroom building will begin on Jan. 3. The driveway and two small parking lots in front of the Claytor building will be fenced off on Jan. 3, and remain closed to employees and students for the duration of the building project. Employees and students will need to park at the TS building or the CJ building.

Construction traffic will enter to the campus by the new Lake Norman Charter and exit the campus at the main drive in front of Claytor.

North Carolina Campus Compact Recognizes Central Piedmont Student for Leadership and Service

Congratulations to Central Piedmont Community College student Jacob Hege who was Jacob Hegerecently recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to civic engagement.

Hege received the organization’s 2018 Community Impact Award, which honors one student leader at each school, during the organization’s annual CSNAP student conference, held Nov. 10 at Fayetteville State University.

Hege has made significant leadership and service contributions to the well-being of his fellow students, the Merancas Campus and the community as a whole since joining the Central Piedmont family two years ago. He is an active member of the campus’s Student Government Association, serving as the group’s Senate Chair. In this role, he has helped raise student involvement and awareness of campus events, increased SGA membership to record levels and brokered an agreement with Huntersville Parks and Rec to offer students free, weekly access to the local rec center and gym to promote healthy living.

In addition to spearheading several projects with SGA, he also contributes his leadership talents to Central Piedmont’s Rotoract Club, MAN UP organization, Phi Theta Kappa and Student Ambassador programs.

Says Jesse Bennett, the Student Life coordinator who nominated Hege for the award, “Jacob is an exemplary student, as well as a  person of tremendous character. His demonstrated leadership and vision have already made a positive impact on our campus community, and I have no reservations that his impact will continue to thrive at Central Piedmont long after he graduates.”

Hege, a Huntersville resident, plans to transfer to a four-year institution upon completing his associate of arts degree.

Tesla establishes START training program at CPCC

products, and CPCC have launched an automotive training program called Tesla START at CPCC. CPCC is the first community college to participate in Tesla START.

Tesla START is a 12-week automotive technician training program designed to provide students with the skills necessary for job placement as service technicians at Tesla Service Centers across North America. Tesla is partnering with colleges to provide the curriculum, instructors and job opportunity so students can make a smooth transition from college to full-time employment. Students train in a space on campus designed to simulate a Tesla Service location so they are ready to hit the ground running on day one of their new careers.

The Tesla START program at CPCC began in January with 13 students. The program is based at CPCC’s Merancas Campus in Huntersville, N.C. Working together, Tesla and CPCC have built a service bay for students to train in that is similar to what they will find at Tesla Service Centers. This first class of Tesla START students at CPCC will graduate April 6. A ceremony will be held at the Merancas Campus.

“Central Piedmont Community College is proud and honored Tesla reached out to us with the opportunity to be among their first community college partners,” said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, CPCC president. “This is such an extraordinary, new opportunity for CPCC students in our Automotive Systems Technology program and one that will set them up for success in a growing field. Clearly, the automobile industry is moving toward all-electric systems and greater sustainability. CPCC students will be on the cutting-edge of this industrial shift.”

Attend Merancas Family Fun Day April 28

Merancas Campus invites you to attend its Merancas Family Fun Day on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., in Huntersville.

CPCC’s Merancas Campus is home to its public safety and transportation system technologies and will be hosting tours of its facilities as well as free information sessions for interested students and parents.

The day is also meant as a time of celebration and giving thanks to the campus’ local and greater Charlotte community by inviting the public to attend and enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities, such as a bounce house, DJ, hot dogs and hamburgers, a coloring and face painting station, and more. The day’s festivities will also include a truck and car showcase, as well as fire trucks, ambulances and police cars.

Overflow Parking at Merancas Campus

The Merancas parking lot will have closed areas due to construction in the coming weeks. With this in mind, CPCC Facilities is asking students and staff to utilize the OVERFLOW ConstructionMecklenburg County parking area, located across the street at 12105 Verhoeff Dr.  Please follow the OVERFLOW PARKING signs to locate the lot. Construction is underway all around Merancas and the Huntersville Athletic Park area, students should use caution while walking and driving around the area.

CPCC Facilities expects construction to be complete by September, giving the campus the capacity to accommodate parking for all students and staff. Please stay tuned for additional updates.
