New Cashiering On-Campus Office Hours

picture behind Weiss building showing open sidewalkEffective January 19, 2021, the Central Piedmont Cashiering Office at Central campus will be open from the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 5:00pm on Friday. The Cashiering office at Levine campus will be open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Cato, Harper, Harris, and Merancas are available online, via email, and via telephone.

These hours will remain in effect until further notice.

To view and pay your balance online, please log in to MyCollege and select Student Finance to review your Account Summary, or to make a Payment.

Spring 2021 Parking Decals Not Required for Spring Semester

picture behind Weiss building showing open sidewalkIn consideration of COVID-19, students are not required to display a Spring 2021 parking decal for the duration of the spring term. Tickets will not be issued to students who must return to campus for in-person instruction during this time.

Keep in mind, parking will still be enforced so be mindful of marked signage  — spaces that require a handicap permit, visitor spaces, and designated maintenance vehicle or administration spaces — while on campus.

Here are the latest Central Campus parking updates (please see the Central Campus map for locations of parking decks and lots):

Parking Decks:

  • Central Campus parking deck #1 –  1321 Charlottetowne Ave.
  • Central Campus parking deck #2 – 1108 Charlottetowne Ave.
  • Central Campus parking deck #3 – 1345 E. 4th St.
  • Central Campus parking deck #4 – 1225 E. 4th St.

Parking Deck # 2: The elevator in this parking deck is currently offline and students and employees must access the stairwell.

Parking Deck / Lot Availability: With all four parking decks open, in addition to multiple surface lots, there should be plenty of parking to accommodate students and employees. Students may not park in the SunTrust bank lot or risk having your car towed.

Also, please be aware there are construction and maintenance projects on most Central Piedmont campuses – particularly Central Campus – that could cause issues. Please use caution when driving near campus, looking out for pedestrians and people riding bikes and scooters. Local businesses strictly enforce towing.

Advisory: Holiday Break Safety Reminder

picture behind Weiss building showing open sidewalkThe college will close Nov. 26-29 for the Thanksgiving holiday. As we head into the holiday season, please remember to stay vigilant and safe as the COVID-19 pandemic persists. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has issued new guidelines for Thanksgiving celebrations and Black Friday shopping, in an effort to, “help North Carolinians gauge the risks, protect their friends and loved ones, and slow the spread of COVID-19.”​

After the holiday break, m​any employees and students will return to our campuses, and we want to continue providing a safe environment to learn and work. It’s up to all of us to follow the mask mandates and other prevention methods that are in effect across the state. Remember, if you develop any COVID-19 symptoms at all, please stay home and consult a doctor. The more we can keep COVID-19 off our campuses, the more we can provide in-person learning opportunities (such as lab classes and hands-on training) that so many of our courses require and so many of our students need to complete their educational goals.​

So remember – keep wearing your masks, keep a good social distance between yourself and others in public, avoid large indoor gatherings, wash your hands frequently, and stay home if you feel ill at all.

Central Piedmont’s Overcash Gallery Presents Artists Monique Luck and Renea Gaete

Mixed media artist, Monique Luck artfully arranges collage pieces in a desired way, all the while contemplating how simple it would be if we could rearrange the pieces of life in a similar fashion. Her muse is the human figure in mixed media. Monique’s work evokes an emotive response speaking to personal loss. While misfortune may be unavoidable, it remains a common thread uniting us all. We live through a time of fear and uncertainty threatening to tear us apart, but by coming together we, like Monique’s artwork, form a cohesive and harmonious picture.

Monique’s goal is to foster a sense of unity capable of transcending cultural differences and social divides. Part of her exhibition will feature an interactive wall. Using magnetic paint and handmade paper, gallery visitors and students will be able to write a memory or thought on the piece of paper and adhere it to the wall. By the end of the exhibit this will become a collage of memories from all of us at Central Piedmont.

Rene Gaete

Central Piedmont Community College’s Overcash Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition, titled “Sill Life,” by René Gaete, Jan. 11 – March 18, on the college’s Central Campus.

Chilean artist René Gaete’s work emits a tone of mystery and longing drawing the viewer into the scene. Sparking discourse, his compositions and techniques echo elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, Baroque and Abstraction. The figures are recognizable as human beings, yet seem to be echoes of the past, like an imprint or a dream.

Straining between a sense of control and spontaneity René combines these two motivations together with an expert hand. Human forms seem to fleet in and out of focus bending the confines of time and space, giving the illusion of active movement in still life forms. “Still Life” is an exhibition that links the past to the present, the old to the new, bonding painting ideals in a novel way.

Advisory: Contractors enhancing security systems on Central Campus Sept 8 – 18

Contractors with Security 101 will be on Central Campus, Sept. 8 – 18, between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., installing ID card access mechanisms to several classroom and common area doors located in all of Central Campus’s buildings, except Giles, Zeiss, the New Classroom Building, and Worrell.

Card access is being installed on multiple doors to enhance security measures and ensure only individuals with an official Central Piedmont ID are granted access to specific areas located inside Central Piedmont’s buildings.

Contractors will be using loud hand tools, such as power saws, to complete the installations, which includes partially cutting the door frame and adding the electronical components needed to lock/unlock the door when authorized.

We are aware some classes will be in session on these days/times. Crews have been asked to make every effort to limit any noise disruptions. Since the majority of Central Piedmont courses are being conducted online this semester, the number of classes impacted by this work is expected to be minimal.

RNC to Impact Traffic Near Central Campus Aug. 23-25

The RNC arrives in Charlotte August 24-27, and city officials have released information outlining how the event will impact traffic patterns, such as road closures, restricted parking zones, local travel access/checkpoints, and changes to public transportation between 6 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 and 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

While several thoroughfares will not by impacted, such as I-277 lanes in both directions, on ramp to I-277 North from South Boulevard/S. Caldwell Street, S. Caldwell Street both directions, and S. Church Street, the RNC will disrupt the flow of traffic in and around the Queen City in other areas.

Library Offers Contact-less Holds

The Library has been accessible remotely since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now offer physical materials through contact-less holds.

Students and faculty/staff can search for and request items through the Library catalog – making it easy and convenient to locate the materials you need. Items can be picked up at either Central, Levine, or Merancas campuses or the library will mail your request directly to your home.

Students can select delivery options during the request process. Do not go to campus until you receive confirmation that your request has been processed. Requested materials will be managed by using lockers that students can access directly.

Locker locations:

  • Central: front vestibule of the library (OLD ATC)
  • Levine: in the vestibule between Levine 2 and 3 (behind the flag circle)
  • Merancas: in the Claytor building in the alcove between the Registration and Information desks

New and Improved Worrell Gym

At Central Piedmont, the options for getting involved are endless. As we’ve adapted to a remote learning environment, we can’t help but miss seeing our students on campus. But exciting improvements are happening while students are away.

The college has over 70 clubs and organizations that you can choose from, as well as fitness and recreation activities. Many of which take place in Worrell Gym on Central Campus.

Central Piedmont Offers Expanded Evening, Friday and Saturday Courses this Fall

Beginning this fall, Central Piedmont Community College will offer expanded course offerings of some of its most in-demand classes on weekday evenings, Fridays and Saturdays at its Central, Harris and Levine campuses. The added course sections give students more options so they can complete a two-year, college transfer degree more quickly.

Central Piedmont’s new course offerings are comprised of more than 70 class sections of 20 high-demand, general education college transfer courses. The classes will be offered in sequential order and focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from biology and public speaking, to psychology and business.

“We’re excited about our new course offerings and how they will have a positive impact on our students’ lives,” said Edith McElroy, dean of Central Piedmont’s Levine Campus. “By offering more courses in the evenings, and on Fridays and Saturdays, we’re able to better accommodate our students’ busy schedules, setting them up for success both inside and outside of the classroom.”

This is the first time the college’s Harris Campus has offered high-demand college transfer classes to residents, giving individuals more options to complete an associate degree. In the past, its course offerings were specific to an academic program, such as baking & pastry arts, dental assisting, early childhood education and others.

In addition to offering more high-demand classes at Harris Campus, Central Piedmont will boast Saturday- only courses for students interested in earning a general Associate in Arts degree or an Associate in Arts degree in business administration in two years. Students seeking either of these degrees will be placed on a learning track that will require them to complete two to three courses, every eight weeks.

The additional courses and weekend accessibility will also give residents the opportunity to experience Central Piedmont – a college that believes in providing individuals with an affordable, hands-on education that will prepare them for the real world so they can make a difference in their community and beyond.

Central Piedmont Art Galleries to Host Summer Art Exhibition ‘Through an Artist’s Eyes’ beginning June 4

Central Piedmont Art Galleries to host art exhibition ‘Through an Artist’s Eyes’ beginning June 4 and the event ‘Vandals Make Your Mark’ on July 9.
Central Piedmont’s Art Galleries are pleased to present “Through an Artist’s Eyes,” June 4 – July 16, 2020, in the North Classroom Building, located on Central Campus. “Through an Artist’s Eyes” is a collaborative exhibition with the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, featuring the artwork of Gaston County High School students and curated by Hannah Musselwhite.
“Through an Artist’s Eyes” showcases artwork concentrations spanning multiple disciplines, including drawing, painting, photography and 3D sculptures. Every year, Gaston County art teachers choose artwork from their students to be judged by the Gaston County Museum of Art and History (GCMAH). The winning artworks become part of the museum’s annual art exhibition of elementary through high school students. This year, the museum partnered with the Central Piedmont Art Galleries to display part of this exhibition on Central Campus showcasing the first through third place winners from the high school section.
“Vandals Make Your Mark,” is a collaborative event with GCMAH. The museum and Central Piedmont Art Galleries staff will demonstrate how to mix a painting medium of cornstartch, food coloring and water. This fun splash of color and culture allows Central Piedmont students the chance to explore their artistic expression by using the cornstarch mixture to paint the sidewalk. This event will occur in conjunction with the opening reception for “Through an Artist’s Eyes.”

The “2020 Annual Juried Student Art Show” exhibition dates have been extended! This Show will remain on display in the Ross Gallery from now until September 24. An opening reception for the students will be rescheduled for early in the fall semester. Virtual Exhibition Access

Engineering Instructors Provide 3D Masks for CharlotteMEDI

Central Piedmont’s Dr. Adam Harris, chair of the computer engineering technology, electrical engineering technology and electronics engineering technology programs, and Dr. Jacob Garbini, chair of the engineering program, are partnering with Charlotte Latin to produce the parts needed for CharlotteMEDI to make face shields for area hospital personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As instructors, Dr. Harris and Dr. Garbini regularly work in the college’s FabLab, home to 10 3D printers, which the duo has been visiting tirelessly, sometimes twice a day, to manufacture the headbands and bottom clips needed to complete the assembly of CharlotteMEDI’s face shields.

To date, the Central Piedmont team has made approximately 300 3D printed parts, such as bottom clips and headbands.

Save Lives: Donate Blood

Central Piedmont along with community blood center, One Blood, will host a blood drive on April 21 from noon-5 p.m., in the driveway in front of the Overcash building. Space is limited in order to social distance and appointments are required. All donors will receive a $20 eGift Card, as well as a free wellness check (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pulse, iron count and cholesterol check). Advisory: In-person classes suspended; remote student services available

The college has suspended in-person classes in an effort to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. We’re partnering with local and state leaders on this comprehensive effort that’s requiring immediate action in every community. We’re doing all we can to keep our students, faculty, staff, and community as safe as possible. Please understand that the situation remains fluid, and we really appreciate your patience and flexibility.

Important Reminders

As a reminder, spring break for students has been extended one week, until March 23. The college is open but students should not report to campus.

Please remember: The short sessions of classes that were originally scheduled to begin March 16 have been moved to start next week on Monday, March 23. Registration for these 4-week and 8-week short sessions has been extended to March 22. Eligible students can use financial aid to buy books and supplies online for the second short session courses at Central Piedmont’s Barnes & Noble College bookstores. Since these are short session courses, it’s especially important to log in as soon as your classes start and begin work.

On March 23, the majority of our courses will resume online. Students enrolled in these classes should start receiving communication from instructors with details about how we will work to help you achieve your academic goals the best we can during this unprecedented situation. Check your college email often for communication from your instructors and the college concerning your classes next week.

During the coronavirus situation, Charter Communications is temporarily offering free access to Spectrum Internet. Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students, faculty, and staff who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. To enroll call 1.844.488.8395.

 Student-facing offices will remain operational remotely to support you during this time. All student services are available online or by phone, and dedicated staff and faculty will respond to emails, voicemails and online inquiries as soon as possible. Please be patient as we all navigate this transition together.

Federal Work Study Employees

Federal Work-Study (FWS) employees will continue to be paid monthly during the emergency period if they are unable to work due to college restrictions. The Financial Aid office will determine the total monthly Federal Work Study pay amount on an individual basis. Prior monthly Federal Work Study hours earned during the 2019-20 academic period will be considered.

 Graduation Ceremonies

We know that graduation ceremonies are on the minds of our students who are completing programs this semester. We are working to determine the best course of action and will update you as soon as we can.

On-Campus Events

By recommendation of Gov. Cooper, college-related events and large gatherings will be cancelled or postponed through April 30. Several departments are exploring remote learning methods and virtual options for programs. Students participating in college affiliated programs, groups, and clubs will be contacted directly with updates on virtual alternatives as they become available.

It is extremely important to stay connected and informed during this time. Visit the college’s COVID-19 Web page to review all announcements and instructions.

Again, please ensure you monitor your college email often as we will update conditions as soon as the information becomes available.   1. Service-In-Action Event: Children’s Theatre (Off-Campus): (Wed, March. 11, 9 am-11am and 11am-1pm)  Student volunteers will assist in ushering in school groups attending the playhouse to watch the performance. They are welcome to watch most of the performance, and then at the conclusion, will assist in ushering the school groups back outside to their buses. Ushers are asked to wear a print-free white top and black bottoms or a Central Piedmont shirt. Volunteers will be indoors and will be able to store their coats and bags if necessary. **5 volunteers requested at each shift. Please sign up here.

Music Department Presents Mozart’s Classic Comic Opera, “Cosi Fan Tutte”

Central Piedmont’s Music Department is excited to present Mozart’s classic comic opera, “Cosi Fan Tutte.” In this modern interpretation, the opera is set in the present day on Central Piedmont’s Central Campus, and will be sung in English. Hilarity ensues as our two heroes make a wager that their girlfriends will be faithful to them no matter what the circumstance.  Mozart’s beautiful melodies and timeless topics give us no choice but to look and laugh at ourselves honestly. You’ll want to find out who wins this wager.

Performances are March 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m., and March 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Halton Theater.

  3. Service-In-Action Event: Latta Nature Preserve (Off-Campus) – Sat., Feb. 29, 9am-1:30pm and 1pm-5pm: THERE ARE TWO SHIFTS YOU MAY SIGN UP FOR ON THIS PROJECT. First shift: 9am-1:30pm Second Shift: 1pm-5pm Address: The Latta Nature Preserve, 5226 Sample Road, Huntersville NC, 28078. Student volunteers will assist with a variety of stations, including but not limited to: crafts, games, registration, assisting with shuttles, preparing free popcorn, tending fire pits, etc. Please dress according to the weather as this event is outside. Feel free to dress in fairy-themed clothing! **20 volunteers requested for each shift.
  4. Food Pantry Open House (Harper Campus) -Mon., March 2, 2pm-4pm:

Women’s Suffrage/Voter Rights Program (Central Campus) – Tue., March 3, 11am-12pm in Tate Hall: Come out and learn about the 100 year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment that gave women in the US the right to vote! Have you Filed Your Taxes? Free Tax Preparation Available for Central Piedmont Students

Free income tax services are available for Central Piedmont students, faculty, and staff until April 15 through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Qualified participants earn $64,000 per year or less.

Eligible individuals are able to participate in two ways, through a Virtual Intake Center or by sitting down in person with a VITA trained tax preparer.

Virtual Intake Sites allow participants to bring the tax documents to a designated location where the tax documents will be uploaded through a secure server, and prepared by a trained VITA tax preparer.

Virtual Intake Sites are available at Cato Campus, Building III, and Room 118 and at Harper Campus, Harper 4, Room 218. Learn more here.

In-person sit-down appointments will be available in the Overcash Building on the Central Campus, in Room 232 (next to Tate Hall). Operating hours for the in-person site are:

  • Monday: 10 a.m. – noon and 1 – 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 8 a.m. – noon and 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8 a.m. – noon and 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday: 10 a.m. – noon and 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. – noon
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. – noon (Walk-Ins Only)

Please make sure to bring all necessary paperwork with you to your appointment:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID). If filing a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign required authorization forms
  • Social Security Cards or an ITIN letter for you, your spouse, and dependents
  • Wages and earning statements (W2, W2-G, 1009-R,1099 Misc., etc.) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099)
  • A copy of last year’s federal & state tax returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account with routing and account numbers for direct deposit
  • Total paid to a daycare provider, including the daycare provider’s name, address and tax identification information, such as a social security number or Employer Identification Number (EIN)
