Central Piedmont Library to Host “Black Migrations: A Town Hall Meeting”
In celebration of Black History Month, Central Piedmont Library is sponsoring “Black Migrations: A Town Hall Meeting – Who, Where, When and Why.”

Discussion moderated by Dr. Jennnifer Dixon-McKnight, assistant professor African-American History and United States History at Winthrop University
Black Migrations emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and new social realities. This theme focuses especially on the 20th century through today.
The Library is also hosting an exhibition using Jacob Lawrence, Migration Series. The exhibition is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of The Library.
Implicit Bias Learning Opportunity – Blind Spots Bus Tour
Experts in human behavior tell us that our unconscious mind makes the majority of our decisions. It creates blind spots or unconscious biases that can narrow our vision of others and potentially influence our behaviors.
Interested in learning more about how unconscious or “implicit bias” affects the way you engage with other people? You will have a great opportunity to learn about implicit bias by participating in an interactive learning experience at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center (NHPMC).

NBA All-Star Game to Impact Traffic Near Central Campus Feb. 13 – 17
Charlotte is hosting the NBA All-Star Game February 13-17. This is the largest sporting event in the city’s history, with as many as 150,000 visitors anticipated.
The All-Star Game and related events will have a significant impact on Center City, including transit and traffic.
- A number of streets in Uptown and around the Spectrum Center will close beginning the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 13 through Sunday, Feb 17.
- The Charlotte Transit Center will temporarily relocate to E. 7th Street, next to First Ward Park, from Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17.
- Traffic in and around Uptown on Friday afternoon, Feb 15, likely will be heavy. Central Piedmont students and employees should plan accordingly.
- Starting at 5 p.m. each evening from Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17, purses, tote bags, and backpacks will not be permitted on the LYNX Blue Line light rail. Riders passing by the 3rd and 7th Street stations will be required to disembark for a security sweep and will be permitted to re-embark once the check has been completed. No trains will stop at the CTC station.
- CMPD anticipates extremely heavy traffic on Independence Boulevard beginning Friday, Feb. 15, and asks that local drivers avoid Uptown if at all possible.

That means that admissions committees around the country are starting to make their decisions about who they’ll be accepting right now. Yet when it comes to building a student population that’s likely to graduate, many of the most promising students are least likely to get into the best schools. The source of these star pupils? Community colleges.
New research from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation makes it clear: community college students who transfer to selective four-year schools perform as well as—or even better than—their peers who come directly from high school.

2019 Alumni Awards – Nominations Being Accepting Now!
Do you know a Central Piedmont Community College graduate who is making a tremendous difference in the community?
Nominations are currently being sought for the 2019 Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award and the inaugural 2019 Young Alumni Award of Excellence. These awards recognize a Central Piedmont graduate who has significantly benefited from his/her experiences at the college and whose efforts have helped the community.
Nominations are being sought for individuals who have:
- Demonstrated community/professional involvement, social responsibility and impact.
- Acquired scholastic and learning skills that have led to continued personal and educational growth.
- Improved his or her economic status and social capital as a result of attending Central Piedmont Community College.
- Invested in the lives of others and is seen as a role model.
- Graduated within the last 10 years (Young Alumni Award of Excellence only).
The selected award recipients will be presented the award at the college’s Commencement on Thursday, May 16, 2019, and a one-year scholarship will be granted to a student in an area of study reflective of the winner’s background.

- Attend Peer Mentor Training and dedicate at least 2 hours a week

On Friday, Feb. 8, at noon, Student Life will be taking students on a guided tour of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture. Students are asked to meet at in the Worrell Building on Central Campus. The group will be taking the trolley uptown and walking to the Gantt Center. Students should expect to arrive back to Central Campus by 3 p.m.

Audition for the Sensoria Student Showcase

STI/HIV Testing in Worrell on Feb. 5
Did you know that in 2016, 1 in 5 cases of HIV in Mecklenburg County were young adults between the ages of 20 and 24?
Student Life is partnering with the Mecklenburg County Health Department to offer free and confidential STI and HIV testing on Tuesday, February 5 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Worrell, Room 1112.
