CPCC will host current McColl Center for Art + Innovation residents for an artist-to-artist lecture, in which each artist speaks briefly about their own practice. Lecturing artists include Austin Ballard, Betsy Birkner, Beverly McIver, Frank Selby, and Jessica Whitbread.
The City of Charlotte has announced Kings Drive will be closed between 4th Street and 7th Street starting Oct. 18, and remained closed for several weeks, to install trolley car tracks at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Kings.
This closure will have a major impact on vehicular traffic on and around Central Campus. The map below shows the traffic flow during the construction project.
The construction project will force students and employees to plan accordingly. Getting in and out of Central Campus parking areas likely will take more time.
The CPCC Art Galleries were pleased to host our first ever workshop with an exhibiting artist. Aspen Hochhalter taught a group of 12 students and community members the art of Lith Printing Photography. The technique is simple and easy for darkroom neophytes to catch on to, but is full of surprises as well.
Thanks to Aspen for teaching the class! Look for more opportunities to learn from our exhibiting artists soon; more darkroom photography and printmaking classes are in the works!

CPCC’s Ross Gallery to host first annual Friends & Family Market fundraiser
WHAT: Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Galleries will host the first Friends & Family Market to raise funds for educational programming.
The Friends & Family Market will contain work by 35 artists who have an affiliation to the gallery. Original works and prints will be sold for $50 or less. Fifty percent of all sales will go to the artist, 40 percent to the galleries and 10 percent to one of three CPCC student visual arts groups.
Artists include current and former CPCC students, instructors, alumni exhibiting artists, future exhibiting artists and more. Aurora Robson and CPCC Sculpture Students in the Exhibition Synthesis
Robson, a McColl Center for Art + Innovation Artist-in-Residence, designed a course implemented by Central Piedmont Community College sculpture students under Ashley Knight called “Sculpture + Intercepting the Waste Stream.” The students went to the Brightwalk neighborhood and collected waste from Irwin Creek (three truckloads!). Working with this trash, they created unique works of art that were exhibited in the show Synthesis, which featured a silent auction with proceeds benefitting a stewardship group that will continue the effort to keep Irwin Creek clean.

Charlotte-based artist and craftsman, Richard Siegel enjoys working with different types of wood, turning bowls and building furniture, but his first love is watercolor painting. This exhibit features watercolor paintings and turned wood pieces.
The CPCC Art Galleries are pleased to announce our new mission statement. We look forward to using it as a tool to guide our programming and educational efforts in the future.

The Galleries constantly support the teaching mission of the college by serving as a lab for the visual arts curricula and enhancing a variety of other subjects. Additional educational programming celebrates artistic achievement and cross-discipline collaboration.
Last week, CPCC Art Galleries partnered with Center City Partners to bring Heather Freeman to the Pocket Park at 6th & Tryon in Uptown Charlotte for some lunchtime fun. Heather brought a huge bucket of legos, set up a camera, and encouraged passerby to come move them one at a time, capturing every change with her lens. The result is a great example of what happens when technology and imagination meet.

On Sunday, September 28 at 4 p.m., Central Piedmont Community College will host the 8th Queen City Soup in Pease Auditorium.
“Queen City Soup” is a regional micro-grant program for emerging and established artists and community activists in the Charlotte metropolitan area. This quarterly event seeks proposals from local artists for projects in the range of $1500-$2500. The projects must have some tangible benefit to community, and projects that have a broad public impact are encouraged. Project Art Aid organizes the events, which include food and drinks, an opportunity to meet the artists, and a program where the artists pitch their projects to the attendees.
