Make-up artist Cara Truitt brings her illustrative vision to light in this inaugural collaborative exhibition with CPCC’s Cosmetology School, featuring photography by Colleen McFiggins and a live butterfly installation sculpture by artist Chris Collman. Women of varied nationalities are transformed into winged creatures, heralding fearlessness, creativity and free expression before the lens. Using the human face and form as her palette, Truitt seeks to empower each young woman to adopt her own feathered alter-ego, begging the question: Can a temporary transformation inspire strength for lasting change? In Flight is a celebration of authenticity and teaches the importance of collaborative partnerships within creative fields.

CPCC’s Cosmetology program welcomed its first class of 28 students in August. Considered a Pivot Point academy, the two-year, associate degree program focuses on delivering a systematic, step-by-step approach to hands-on training. As a result, students are currently learning how to cut and color hair and perform facials, manicures and pedicures. Their training will prepare them to take the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts Licensing Exam.
The Center’s new salon features 50 haircutting stations, and will be open to the public year-round, including Saturday hours, beginning Nov. 11. Clients will be encouraged to make appointments. CPCC’s New Cosmetology Program Launches for Fall 2013

CPCC to Open New Cosmetology Program

CPCC to Open New Cosmetology Program

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has added a new Cosmetology program that will begin in the fall 2013. “August 15 is the official beginning,” said Catherine Cunningham, program coordinator, Cosmetology. Unlike other Cosmetology schools, CPCC will offer an accredited two-year AAS degree in Cosmetology and classes may be transferred to other four-year educational institutions.

The Cosmetology program will be taught from the international cosmetology curriculum, Pivot Point. According to Pivot-Point.com, Pivot Point has provided the best hair and beauty education in the United States. Cunningham shared that Pivot Point curriculum is and has been well respected in the cosmetology community for more than 50 years.

According to the Cosmetology program’s online frequently asked questions and answers, the estimated cost of the five semester program is $7,300. These costs include tuition, fees, uniforms, textbooks and the student cosmetology kit. The program does accept financial aid. Eligible students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher to enter the program.

CPCC’s Cosmetology program will have 40 seats every fall and spring semester for full-time students. “We still have seats available for the fall,” said Cunningham. Classes are filling fast and will be held at the completely renovated City View Center, located at 1609 Alleghany Street, Charlotte, NC 28208. Classes will be held Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Completion of the new renovations will be on July 19,” said Cunningham.

Students will also provide the public with hair, skin and nail services at discounted rates after they have completed 300 practice classroom hours at the City View Center under the supervision of licensed instructors. “City View Center will be a 50-salon chair clinic,” said Cunningham. Services will include cutting, coloring, perming and styling hair. “Students will learn to work with all nationalities of  hair,” said Cunningham. Students will also provide facial services of deep cleaning, makeup application, eye brow waxing, as well as nail care services with real or acrylic nails and nail art.

Cunningham said CPCC will work with the job placement office after students have received their Cosmetology degrees. “I’m sure salons looking for successful graduates with exceptional guest relation skills will be attracted to CPCC’s Cosmetology graduates,” said Cunningham. Cunningham said this program is for students who like to be around people and make people feel good about themselves. “At some point this industry touches everyone in some way,” said Cunningham.

CPCC to Open New Cosmetology Program

Mecklenburg County residents who want to pursue a career as a salon professional can get the training they’ll need at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) starting in August.

CPCC will open a new two-year associate-degree program in cosmetology when the 2013-14 academic year begins in August. Students in the program will learn how to cut and color hair and perform facials, manicures and pedicures. Their training will prepare them to take the North Carolina state licensure exam for cosmetology.  The cosmetology curriculum is an exclusive member school partnered with Pivot Point International which is based on the Scientific Approach to Hair Design.

In addition to the program’s core cosmetology courses, students will take a required small business management course. The business course is designed to help prepare program graduates who want to become the owners of their own salons.

The program will open with a maximum of 40 students and be based at CPCC’s City View Center, located on Alleghany Street, near Ashley Road. The facility will operate as a full-service salon open to the public. The salon will be open year-round. Clients will be encouraged to make appointments.

CPCC currently is renovating the City View Center, an extreme makeover to transform the space into a salon with 40 haircutting stations. The project, including design, construction, specialized equipment and furniture, will cost approximately $1 million.

There is an increasing demand for salon stylists and a desire to provide a high-quality, affordable program in Mecklenburg County prompted CPCC to establish the program.

“Labor projections forecast a growing need for salon professionals for the next several years,” explained Ruth Hedgpeth, CPCC associate dean, health programs and early childhood education. “At the same time, the college wants to provide career training opportunities in Mecklenburg County that are more affordable than many of the private and for-profit schools.”

A program director and up to six full-time instructors will teach and mentor students.
