R4 is a student-led, student-driven, inter-generational multimedia exhibit utilized to narrate the untold story of Willie McDaniel and other past and present injustices that highlight man’s inhumanity to man and to the earth. As the exhibit sheds light on these injustices, the student artists aim not only to remember and reflect on the history of our city, but to reconcile, restore and re-imagine a more just and equitable present and future for our city, state, country and world.

A Joy Forever: Asian Brush Paintings

Barbara Rizza Mellin captures the simple elegance of natural objects in Chinese Brush Painting, the real and apparent spontaneity of the process in which a few strokes capture the beauty of a blossom, the fragility of a fallen leaf. Her works combine elements of water color paintings and calligraphic line drawings, and, yet, have their own unique look and style. Illuminate by the ArtPop Street Gallery Class of 2018

Through Illuminate, Central Piedmont’s Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery partners with the ArtPop Street Gallery’s Class of 2018 in the shared vision of bringing art to students, faculty, and the community. This collective showcase of eclectic pieces created in paint, collage, photography, stoneware, and glass reflects the diversity and depth of Charlotte’s local art. Some of the works are recognizable as those that were lit up over the city, while others are new endeavors. All reflect the aspiration and passion of the artist.

Don’t miss the eclectic array of dazzling glass, ceramic and wood pieces exhibited at the Harper IV gallery location. Through the generosity of Bill and the late Patty Gorelick, this stunning space offers mediums and themes that reflect tranquility, excitement, diversity, and harmony.

Frieze by artist Tom Stanley through December 18, 2020

   

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

$HAN Wallace’s ‘cutXcopy’ Comes to the Gorelick Gallery at Levine

A conversation with photographer $HAN Wallace about her life and inspirations for her exhibit “cutXcopy.”

$HAN is an award-winning photographer, artist, and freedom fighter from East Baltimore. The Baltimore City Paper named $HAN Wallace Best Photographer (2016) and Best Solo Show (2017).  Recently, $HAN lectured at Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art-Hodges Taylor as part of the Charlotte Millennial Art Program. $HAN is a current artist-in-residence at The Roll Up CLT.

Inspired by the service of social change and the social power of art, and harsh realities rooted in racial and economic divides during her upbringing in poverty, $HAN uses the lens to document communities of the African diaspora. Her work conveys and reveals the social, cultural, and political narratives of black life serving as photographic documentation and archive of Blackness.

Artist $HAN Wallace pulls from her own collection of photographs to piece and layer imagery of landscapes, textures and people to create new narratives. Using collage techniques as a means of addressing topics like race, class and politics, $HAN is able to communicate a sense of new worlds that feel both foreign and familiar.

Levine Campus Volunteer and Part-Time Job Fest Sept. 18

Are you looking for a part-time job or service-learning opportunity? Career Services is partnering with Service Learning to host the Levine Campus Volunteer and Part-Time Job Fest!

This event will take place on Wednesday, September 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Levine II on the second floor, and will feature 20+ organizations who are currently hiring for part-time positions or recruiting for volunteers.

The following companies are scheduled to recruit students for jobs: Amazon, ATG Entertainment, AUTOBELL Car Wash, Booster, Carowinds, Creative Events Charlotte, FedEx Ground, Fossa Services, Plantation Estates of Matthews, Sam’s Express Car Wash, State Farm, and Target.

The following organizations are offering service opportunities: Alzheimer’s Association, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Children’s Theater or Charlotte, Firm Foundations, Guardian ad Litem, Habitat for Humanity of Matthews, and The Harvest Center.

Levine Campus to Offer Expanded Evening, Friday, and Saturday Course Offerings

Beginning this fall, the Levine Campus will offer expanded course offerings of some of its most in-demand classes on weekday evenings, Fridays, and Saturdays to give students more options to complete a two-year, college transfer degree more quickly.

The new course offerings are comprised of more than 40, high-demand courses. The classes will be offered in sequential order and focus on a variety of general education subjects, ranging from biology and public speaking, to psychology and business.

The college is offering more courses in the evenings, and on Fridays and Saturdays, to help accommodate students’ busy schedules, setting them up for success both inside and outside of the classroom.
