Jericho Brown is author of the “The Tradition,” for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and he is the winner of the Whiting Award. Brown’s first book, “Please,” won the American Book Award. His second book, “The New Testament,” won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His third collection, The covers of two of Jerico's books: "The Tradition" and "How We Do It."The Tradition, won the Paterson Poetry Prize and was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His poems have appeared in The Bennington Review, Buzzfeed, Fence, jubilat, The New Republic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, TIME, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is the director of the Creative Writing Program and a professor at Emory University.

In addition to being a celebrated poet and warm, engaging teacher, Brown is
the editor of the new anthology “How We Do It: Black Writers on Craft, Practice, and Skill.”

Slam poetry master Bluz Rogers (Instagram: @bluzbluzbluz) will be our emcee! Do you have an original slam poetry piece you want to share? Register at this link to showcase your piece.

Don’t have any poetry to share? Please come and watch! Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Submit poetry or short fiction to ‘The Hammer’

The Hammer,” Central Piedmont’s annual Student Arts & Literature Magazine, is now accepting submissions for the student literature portion of the 2023 publication.

Submissions are due Sunday, March 26 for Poetry, Short Fiction, and Flash Fiction.

General* Genre Guidelines:

  • Poetry:  max 64 lines
  • Short Fiction: max 3,500 words
  • Flash Fiction: ~ 250 to 500 words

Entrants must be currently enrolled at Central Piedmont. The best and brightest submissions will be published in the 2023 edition of The Hammer (in print and online). Please help us show the community how AMAZING our students are!

“The Hammer” was founded in 2017 and is run by the Central Piedmont English department, with support from other departments. Literary works included in past issues have been winners of the local level of a national literary competition sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Central Piedmont’s Annual Student Arts & Literature Magazine (The Hammer) is now accepting student writing submissions for the 2022 publication. Submissions are due Sunday, March 27th for Poetry, Short Fiction, and Essay.

Here are the Genre Guidelines:

  • Poetry:  max 64 lines
  • Fiction: 200 – 3,500 words
  • Essay: max 2,500 words (2022 essay theme: “The Chrysalis”)

The best and brightest submissions will be published in the 2022 edition of The Hammer (in print and online). Please share your voice and help us show the community how amazing you are!
