Apply For The Library Scholarship!

The Theresa Thompson Library Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for currently enrolled students pursuing a two-year degree at the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).   It is made possible through library fundraising projects.  The deadline for submitting an application for the scholarship is November 2, 2018.

To be eligible for the CPCC Library Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a full-time student, currently enrolled in 12 credit hours or more in an approved program leading to a two-year degree.
  • Must have completed at least one full-time semester at CPCC and currently be enrolled as a full-time student with a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher. A full-time student is one who is taking 12 credit hours or more. A copy of your complete CPCC transcript (unofficial) must be submitted with the application.
  • Submit a completed application with supporting documents.
  • Write an original 550 to 750 word essay on how the CPCC libraries have helped you achieve your educational goals thus far.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a CPCC faculty or staff member that you have known within the last two years.
  • Library employees, including work study students, are NOT eligible to apply.
  • Scholarships are awarded for one academic semester only; previous Theresa Thompson Library Scholarship winners may not reapply.

Resource of the Month – Test Prep Help

Studying

Are you preparing to take an exam such as the ACT, SAT, TEAS, TOEFL, or a licensing or certification test? Need to brush up on your math or reading skills? Our resources of the month can help you! We have 2 test prep resources that can help you with all of the above and more.

Testing and Education Reference Center – Includes in-depth information on college,graduate, and professional programs, professional training, scholarships, and entrance tests alongside practice tests for entrance exams, certifications, and licensing exams. If you need a TEAS practice test, this is the resource for you!

PrepStep – Practice tests, exercises, skill-building courses, and information for students & adult learners. Practice tests include immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results. Standardized tests covered include CLEP, GED, SAT, ACT, US Citizenship and licensing tests for various careers. Basic skills in math and English are also included.

Welcome to the Fall 2018 semester!   With the beginning of a new semester, we’d just like to take some time to remind you of a few of the services that the library has to offer, as well as highlight a few recent changes.

Books and More!

As always, the library wants to help out with your research and educational needs.  To that end, we provide access to a wide variety of resources, both in print and online.

We have a new online catalog that allows you to search for both articles and books or DVDs available in the library (or in electronic format), all at once. Check it out here.

You might also be interested in checking out some of our online resources available on our Research Databases page.

Need help using any of our resources?  Don’t be afraid to Ask a Librarian!  Library staff are available to help in person, over the phone or online.

Unfortunately, online book renewals and placing online holds are not working right now. However, you may contact any CPCC Library location to place a hold or ask to have your books renewed.

Study Space?  We Have That!

Need a quiet place to study?  All CPCC campus libraries have dedicated quiet study spaces.  Additionally, Central, Cato, Harris and Levine campuses have study rooms available. You can book these study rooms yourself online. Book early though, as they tend to fill up quickly!

Congratulations Mark Coltrain!

CPCC Library’s very own Mark Coltrain, Assistant Director for Instructional and Research Services, was recently awarded the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards by the League for Innovation in the Community College.This award celebrates outstanding contributions and leadership by community college faculty and staff. Recipients are recognized in a series of activities and promotions, and honored at special events at the League’s Innovations conference each spring. Fine Forgiveness

Fine Forgiveness Days

From November 13 to December 12, 2017, the CPCC Library will be hosting Fine Forgiveness Days. During this period, fines accrued from overdue items will be forgiven at all campus libraries in exchange for a donation to CPCC’s Single Stop program.

How does fine forgiveness work?
• For every multi-pack of requested items from the list below $3.00 in fines will be waived. Single items will not be accepted. For instance, an individual serving of Lance crackers will not be accepted, however a multi-pack of crackers will be.
• A maximum of $20 in fines will be waived from any account.
• Only fines are waived – replacement fees for lost books are not eligible.
• No credits for future fines will be issued. Fine Forgiveness Days is for existing fines only.

The following multi-pack items are requested for donation for Fine Forgiveness Days:
• Microwave Popcorn
• Hot Cocoa
• Apple Juice
• Water
• Trail Mix or Nuts
• Granola Bars, Fruit Bars, Breakfast Bars
• Oatmeal
• Lance Crackers
• Tissues

Donations will be accepted even if you don’t have fines!

Events

Learning Resource Center Green Roof Project

Thanks to the CPCC Public Art Committee and CPCC Cabinet for supporting the LRC Green Roof Project.  The Green roof sculptures presentation was held on Wednesday, April 19th, 2017.  The sculptor, Matt Horick talked about his process in creating the sculptures.  The space on the city view side of the LRC veranda is a beautiful outdoor space for anyone wanting to enjoy the beauty of the Charlotte skyline.

Online Resources

New Resource: SAGE Journals

SAGE Journals is CPCC Library’s newest research resource for students. This extensive database contains more than 1000 journals spanning the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, and Medicine. The high quality resources that SAGE provides access to can really make a difference in your research papers!
