Arbor Day Celebrations in May

Each year, Central Piedmont holds a tree sapling give away at all campuses as part of the Tree Campus initiative to promote tree planting and environmental education.  Our college partner, Bartlett Tree Experts, is providing a variety of beautiful tree saplings this year.  As a result, each campus will have its own Arbor Day celebration, with Student Life operating the sapling stations and providing tree care information.

In addition to giving away saplings from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. during each event, the college will also transplant and plant a few trees that are in the Central Piedmont nursery.  These trees were saved from the grounds around the area formerly known as Terrell and LRC.   The date and events for each campus are:

Mother’s Day is just one month away. Honor, remember and celebrate the moms in your life

by participating in the Central Piedmont Skyline Run on Saturday, May 11 – Mother’s Day Weekend.

Bring your family and make it a family event. In addition to the Kaye McGarry 5K Run, the event includes a 5K Walk, a 1-mile Family Fun Run and the Charlotte Smarty Pants 5K Baby Jogger Championship. Also, plan to visit our Mother’s Café where kids can plant a succulent for mom as well as the Health and Fitness Zone, Food Zone and Kids Zone. There is something fun for everyone!

All proceeds from the Central Piedmont Skyline Run support scholarships for our student mothers – women like Amelia Zytka – who are seeking the education and career training opportunities they need to secure meaningful employment and a bright future for their families.

NC STEM Alliance Workshop

All Central Piedmont students are invited to attend this week’s workshop held by the NC Credit scoreSTEM Alliance. The topic is: “Financial Literacy: Credit.” Come out and learn what credit is and how to manage it. This workshop will be held on April 11, 2019, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., in the Zeiss Building, Room 1106 on Central Campus. Hope to see you there!

Learn How to Promote Healthy Brain Development for Ages 0-3

Did you know that 80 percent of brain growth happens in the first three years of life?

Meck BasicsEveryday interactions between children, their parents, and other caregivers provide abundant opportunities to give children from every background a great start in life!

Come to MECK BASICS to learn how to promote healthy brain development and responsive caregiving through daily use of the Basics. Sponsored by the Central Piedmont Early Childhood Education Club, this event will be Saturday, April 27, 1 – 4 p.m., in the Harris Campus Auditorium.

The workshop is free. Those who participate for the entire program will receive a certificate for 3 North Carolina DCDEE training credit hours. Students can pre-register by emailing Mercy Thompson, Central Piedmont Early Childhood Education Club secretary, at mthomp24@email.cpcc.edu.

Celebrate Earth Day April 22 – 26 during Science Week 2019!

Spring Book Sale

Need something to read? Central Piedmont’s Central Library will be having its spring book sale during the week of Sensoria!

WHEN: April 8-11, 7:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and April 12, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

WHERE: Central Campus Library, Room 201. (Please note that the library is in a new space this semester. It is the old Advanced Technologies Center building located next to the Citizens Building and the under-construction classroom building.)

Additionally, all other campus libraries will have their book sales going on during regular library hours – cpcc.edu/library/about-us/hours

The event will go from 2-3:30 p.m., and will take place in Zeiss, Roomo 1100. Following the documentary there will be a panel discussion of Central Piedmont staff, faculty, and student(s).

Meet Your 2019 Commencement Speaker: Desiree Kinker

The Graduation Committee is pleased to announce Desiree Kinker as the 2019 student Desiree Kinkerspeaker for graduation! Desiree is graduating with an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts, is a member of the Central Piedmont NC Student Culinary Competition Team, a former Ruth G. Shaw Scholar, and an active community volunteer.

Those who know Desiree are familiar with the smile that greets you at her first hello, but few are probably aware of the journey that might lie beneath. Desiree is graduating in May as a successful culinary student, but the road that got her this far has bumps and bruises and many downs and ups. Though Desiree greets you with light, she’s not afraid to tell you about the tough challenges she has faced and overcome during her life and as a student.

Desiree is a true example of how Central Piedmont can lift an individual from where they begin and catapult them into their own, unique future. She is a prime example of a student who valued and leveraged relationships around her, working hard (and with great wisdom) to build a better life and bring light to any space she enters. We are proud of her and of all of our graduates, and we are excited to hear her message!

Two Central Piedmont Students Named 2019 American Society of Echocardiography Alan D. Waggoner Sonographer Student Scholarship Award Recipients

Central Piedmont is proud to announce that cardiovascular technology students Lindsay Hammond of Charlotte, N.C., and Bradford Smith of Matthews, N.C., have received the 2019 American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) Alan D. Waggoner Sonographer Student Scholarship Award.

The award recognizes students who exhibit a passion for the discipline of echocardiography and demonstrate leadership abilities. To be nominated, students must be a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, attend a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP), and be enrolled in a cardiac or echocardiography ultrasound program.

Hammond and Smith met the award’s criteria and scored high marks in its student nominee requirements section, which included nomination information from the program director, letters of support, personal accomplishments, and academic records.

“This prestigious award is a wonderful acknowledgement of our student’s work and the commitment of our cardiovascular technology program,” said Maureen Bumba, dean for health profession and human services at Central Piedmont.

As 2019 Alan D. Waggoner Sonographer Student Scholarship Award recipients, Hammond and Smith will:

  • each receive $1,000 to help pay for their program tuition expenses
  • receive a complimentary registration to the ASE’s 30th annual Scientific Sessions, being held June 21-26 in Portland, Oregon
  • be recognized for their accomplishment at the ASE Awards Presentation on June 22, in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, and on the ASE’s website

Free Expunction Workshop for Prior Criminal Charges or Convictions

Can’t pass a background check because of old charges or convictions?

Please join Single Stop and Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy on Central Campus for a free Expunction Workshop on April 11, 2019, from 12:15 – 1:30 p.m. in Zeiss, Room 1112, where a CCLA attorney will discuss the expunction process.

During this session, Central Piedmont students who are trying to clean up their prior criminal record can learn if they might be eligible for free legal help to remove charges or convictions. Any questions can be directed to jacqueline.villalobos@cpcc.edu or call 704.330.6435.

Complete the FAFSA by April 1

The Office of Financial Aid makes every effort to help you and your family secure the funding you need to become a part of our Central Piedmont family. To be considered for the most aid, we strongly encourage our students and parents to complete the FAFSA and all requirements by April 1 of each year.  We have started processing financial aid for the 2019-20 academic year. Check your Financial Aid Self-Service.  If you need additional documentation, bring in your documentation now. The earlier you submit your documentation, the earlier you can be awarded.

The 2019-20 FAFSA® now available! Interested in financial aid for Fall 2019 through Summer 2020? Complete the 2019-20 FAFSA® as soon as possible to ensure maximum opportunity to access the best financial aid.

Need assistance completing your FAFSA application? We’re here to help! Come to FAFSA on Fridays, from 9 a.m. to noon, or see a Financial Aid representative for assistance. Bring your parent(s) and tax transcripts and sit down with a Financial Aid staff member to discuss your questions and complete your application. For the 2018-19 year, the tax filing year in question and income information should be from 2016. For the 2019-20 year, the tax filing year in question and income information should be from 2017.

Reach Your Full Potential with Central Piedmont’s ‘Year Up’ Program

YEar UpWant to start a career in technology or business and continue your education? Interested in a paid internship?
Year Up is a one-year program at Central Piedmont – Central Campus open to students who are 18-24 years old. You will earn an education stipend (up to $200/month) while taking your Central Piedmont courses in Software Development, Information Technology, or Business for a semester. The following semester you will be matched to a six-month paid (up to $600/month) corporate internship and earn credits toward your degree.  This program begins in August 2019 and spaces are limited.
