Central Piedmont Ross Art Gallery presents ‘Floating Blue’ by Thomas Pickarski, an exhibition beginning Jan. 11, 2022

‘Floating Blue’ by Thomas Pickarski Multi-media visual and performance artist Thomas Pickarski will bring his exhibition to the Central Piedmont Community College Overcash Art Gallery, located on the college’s Central Campus, to take visitors on his journey through the fragile arctic landscape with a series of photographs depicting the eternal beauty of icebergs. Intrigued by the happenstance of abstracted forms in nature, Thomas Pickarski found himself drawn to the sculptural magnificence of icebergs and the otherworldliness of the landscape in which they exist.

Pickarski waited till late in August before making his journey through the arctic ice to better capture the quality of soft light that occurs in the last hours of twilight, known as The Blue Hour. In The Blue Hour, he is able to photograph deep shades of blue that portray the ethereal beauty of icebergs. Students and visitors to the gallery can experience the splendor of these natural sculptures through Pickarski’s expert photography.

The Gorelick Family has generously contributed to the exhibition of visual arts at Central Piedmont for the benefit of students and there is a gallery located on each of the college’s six campuses. There is a wide variety of art being showcased, and here are some of our favorites:

Artist Malu Tan uses rich colors and careful technique to convey strong messages with simple scenes. Her inspiring work is on display at the Levine Campus.

Another interesting artist is Elijah Kell, a high school junior who specializes in glasswork. Elijah has his own public gallery and studio at only 17 years old?! Imagery plays a key role in his work, and the pieces he creates are truly breathtaking.

College Receives $10-Million Gift Commitment

visual arts studentA donor who wishes to remain anonymous has made a $10-million gift commitment to Central Piedmont Community College. The gift is the single-largest individual donation in Central Piedmont’s 58-year history and among the largest gifts ever made to a community college nationwide.

Central Piedmont will use the gift to transform its role as a community resource for arts and humanities programming and learning.

Central Piedmont Art Gallery Scholarship Program

Gorelick Galleries at levine

The Central Piedmont Art Gallery Scholarship Program is an opportunity for current students at Central Piedmont to volunteer with the Arts Galleries Program to build leadership skills and gain valuable educational experience. Volunteers will learn about the daily operations of art galleries, explore possible careers in art-related fields, and share a passion for visual arts with others.

Opportunities:
– Limited and awarded based on skills and qualification of the applicant.
– Available with the Ross and Overcash Galleries and the Patty and Bill Gorelick Galleries at Central Piedmont.
– Students are expected to complete 5 to 10 hours a week during the semester.
– Students are expected to commit to both the fall and spring semester.
– Opportunities during the summer term may also be available.

Provided by the Central Piedmont Foundation, a scholarship of $2,000 is available to student volunteers accepted into this program for the 2021-2022 academic year. Please complete the application.

Please note: This application will close at midnight on July 17. Interviews will be held the first week of August. 2021.

Attend Central Piedmont Summer Theatre’s Upcoming Production for Free!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Central Piedmont Summer Theatre is pleased to perform “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” July 9 – 25, on the renowned Halton Theater stage, located on the college’s Central Campus.

With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Tim Rice, this musical is a reimagining of the biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, his eleven brothers, and his coat of many colors.

Told entirely through song with the help of a main character Narrator, the musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.

This magical musical is full of catchy songs in a variety of styles, ranging from a parody of French ballads (“Those Canaan Days”) and country-western (“One More Angel in Heaven”), to calypso (“Benjamin Calypso”) and the unforgettable classics “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”

The Art Galleries at Central Piedmont Presents “From the Vault! Adopt a Ceramic Show”

The Art Galleries at Central Piedmont are proud to bring to you a unique exhibition of 3D works of art titled, “From the Vault! Adopt a Ceramic Show.” This is a collection of works not seen by the public eye for years.

The Art Galleries boasts a diverse selection of ceramic artworks in need of a new home. Many of these pieces on exhibition were removed from the college’s old library prior to its demolition on Central Campus. No longer will these ceramics stay in boxes collecting dust in storage. Instead, they will soon be unboxed for the viewing pleasure of all our gallery visitors during this special exhibition.

“From the Vault! Adopt a Ceramic Show” is no ordinary art exhibition. It comes with a special twist that the Central Piedmont Art Galleries hopes everyone will find enticing. The goal is to find a new home for each ceramic in the show in a Central Piedmont staff member’s office, rather than return the piece to storage Central Piedmont staff will be invited to “adopt” one of the ceramics for their current office area throughout the exhibition. Since the college already owns all of the ceramics in the show there is no paperwork or payment required for the ceramics, making the adoption process undeniably smooth.

Central Piedmont’s permanent art collection contains more than 700 unique works of art with the vast majority created by the college’s visual arts students. Pieces in the collection range from the college’s infancy in the 1960s, to the present day. The ceramics in “From the Vault! Adopt a Ceramic Show” represent a small portion of the collection.

Central Piedmont’s Overcash Gallery Presents Artists Monique Luck and Renea Gaete

Mixed media artist, Monique Luck artfully arranges collage pieces in a desired way, all the while contemplating how simple it would be if we could rearrange the pieces of life in a similar fashion. Her muse is the human figure in mixed media. Monique’s work evokes an emotive response speaking to personal loss. While misfortune may be unavoidable, it remains a common thread uniting us all. We live through a time of fear and uncertainty threatening to tear us apart, but by coming together we, like Monique’s artwork, form a cohesive and harmonious picture.

Monique’s goal is to foster a sense of unity capable of transcending cultural differences and social divides. Part of her exhibition will feature an interactive wall. Using magnetic paint and handmade paper, gallery visitors and students will be able to write a memory or thought on the piece of paper and adhere it to the wall. By the end of the exhibit this will become a collage of memories from all of us at Central Piedmont.

Rene Gaete

Central Piedmont Community College’s Overcash Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition, titled “Sill Life,” by René Gaete, Jan. 11 – March 18, on the college’s Central Campus.

Chilean artist René Gaete’s work emits a tone of mystery and longing drawing the viewer into the scene. Sparking discourse, his compositions and techniques echo elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, Baroque and Abstraction. The figures are recognizable as human beings, yet seem to be echoes of the past, like an imprint or a dream.

Straining between a sense of control and spontaneity René combines these two motivations together with an expert hand. Human forms seem to fleet in and out of focus bending the confines of time and space, giving the illusion of active movement in still life forms. “Still Life” is an exhibition that links the past to the present, the old to the new, bonding painting ideals in a novel way.

Central Piedmont Announces Fall Semester Exhibits for the Bill and Patty Gorelick Program

Central Piedmont Gorelick Galleries are delighted to announce two new exhibits that have joined the gallery this fall semester. The new exhibits will be on display at Harper and Central Campus.
The exhibit on our Harper Campus is showcased at Harper IV and features glass work from artist John Geci. Geci is a glassblower near Penland School of Craft in Western North Carolina. Having been a student and a studio assistant to local glassblowers, Geci learned a diverse array of techniques and approaches to the material becoming a master to his craft. His exhibit features 13 beautifully crafted glass vessels that capture his vision of static motion. His contemporary blown glass pieces illuminate the gallery with stunning color variation and striking patterns. His exhibit is also featured alongside the two-dimensional works of Tom Stanley at Harper Campus.
 
 
The exhibit on our Central Campus is located in the North Classroom Building and features work from artist Barbel Brooks in an exhibit called “Fused Imagination”. Brooks discovered her lifelong passion when beginning to fuse glass 20 years ago. As her art evolved her focus continued to expand with specific areas of inspiration in water, color, and culture.  Her travels along the majestic seas, personal life experience, and background in chemistry and physics have had an influence on her artwork and have brought her pieces to life. This exhibit ranges from decorative glass plates to vibrant wall hangings which can stand alone as well as complement its counterparts. This solo exhibit uses glass with fusing techniques to create unique artwork capturing her infinite colorful imagination.

Central Piedmont’s Overcash Art Gallery to present ‘The Faculty Art Show’ beginning August 10

Central Piedmont’s Overcash Art Gallery is pleased to present “The Faculty Art Show,” August 10 – October 2. This group show features Central Piedmont’s talented art staff and is curated by Amelia Zytka.

“The Faculty Art Show” incorporates artwork from multiple disciplines, including drawing, painting, photography and ceramics. While the college’s art instructors excel at helping students succeed in their budding art careers, many of them are accomplished artists as well.

This exhibition not only gives Central Piedmont’s Overcash Art Gallery an opportunity to display faculty work, but also affords students the chance to see their instructors’ artwork in a gallery setting. This show is a must-see for anyone on campus and provides an enjoyable diversion. Central Piedmont’s Overcash Art Gallery is enthusiastic about the opportunity to kick start the college’s fall semester with this exciting, new exhibition.

Virtual Summer Theatre Presents Final Showing on July 25

Central Piedmont Summer Theatre will present a final evening of Virtual Summer Theatre Concerts on Saturday July 25th at 7:00pm. The event will live stream on Central Piedmont Arts Facebook page and on the Central Piedmont Theatre YouTube channel.

Summer Theatre All-stars and the stars of tomorrow will be performing the Best of Broadway during the evening.  We have special guests from our alumni over the years who have gone on from Summer Theatre to appear on Broadway, in national tours, television and film in such shows as Wicked, Jersey Boys, Beautiful, Waitress, Once, Bandstand and many more. Joining our alumni will be current students honing their skills as they to prepare to hit the boards across the world.

  • Work may be paintings, drawings, mixed media, photographs, prints, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, or fiber art.
  • Prints and photos must be original and printed by the photographer.
  • All works must be original – no copies or photographs of other art will be accepted.

Central Piedmont Art Galleries to Host Summer Art Exhibition ‘Through an Artist’s Eyes’ beginning June 4

Central Piedmont Art Galleries to host art exhibition ‘Through an Artist’s Eyes’ beginning June 4 and the event ‘Vandals Make Your Mark’ on July 9.
Central Piedmont’s Art Galleries are pleased to present “Through an Artist’s Eyes,” June 4 – July 16, 2020, in the North Classroom Building, located on Central Campus. “Through an Artist’s Eyes” is a collaborative exhibition with the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, featuring the artwork of Gaston County High School students and curated by Hannah Musselwhite.
“Through an Artist’s Eyes” showcases artwork concentrations spanning multiple disciplines, including drawing, painting, photography and 3D sculptures. Every year, Gaston County art teachers choose artwork from their students to be judged by the Gaston County Museum of Art and History (GCMAH). The winning artworks become part of the museum’s annual art exhibition of elementary through high school students. This year, the museum partnered with the Central Piedmont Art Galleries to display part of this exhibition on Central Campus showcasing the first through third place winners from the high school section.
“Vandals Make Your Mark,” is a collaborative event with GCMAH. The museum and Central Piedmont Art Galleries staff will demonstrate how to mix a painting medium of cornstartch, food coloring and water. This fun splash of color and culture allows Central Piedmont students the chance to explore their artistic expression by using the cornstarch mixture to paint the sidewalk. This event will occur in conjunction with the opening reception for “Through an Artist’s Eyes.”

Central Piedmont Presents “Violins of Hope” in Partnership with UNCC

In partnership with the UNCC College of Arts + Architecture, we present this musical commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust, featuring Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” and the east coast premiere of “Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope.” Composed by internationally regarded composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer “Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope” was commissioned to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, receiving its world premiere in the San Francisco Bay Area on January of 2020.

“Intonations” is a song cycle scored for mezzo-soprano, violin soloist, and string quartet, with a concluding solo by a child violinist. The poetic text is inspired by the stories from the book “Violins of Hope: Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind’s Darkest Hour,” written by UNC Charlotte musicologist James Grymes. Published by Harper Collins in 2014, “Violins of Hope” won a National Jewish Book Award. It tells the histories of violins recovered from the Holocaust by Iraeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein. UNC Charlotte presented the North American premiere of those violins in exhibition and performance in April 2012. Since then more than a dozen U.S. cities have hosted the “Violins of Hope.”

“Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope” will feature mezzo-soprano Audrey Babcock, assistant professor of voice at UNC Charlotte, and solo violinist Mikylah Myers from West Virginia University, performing with the Beo String Quartet of Pittsburgh. Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra violinist David Karpov joins the ensemble for the conclusion.

Following the performance of Intonations, the University Chorale and the Central Piedmont Chorus will perform Bernstein’s beautiful “Chichester Psalms,” a setting in three movements of six Psalms, sung in Hebrew. Conducted by Alan Yamamoto, division director of visual and performing arts at Central Piedmont, Chichester Psalms will feature harpist Christine Leimer, a professor at Central Piedmont.

Music Department Presents Mozart’s Classic Comic Opera, “Cosi Fan Tutte”

Central Piedmont’s Music Department is excited to present Mozart’s classic comic opera, “Cosi Fan Tutte.” In this modern interpretation, the opera is set in the present day on Central Piedmont’s Central Campus, and will be sung in English. Hilarity ensues as our two heroes make a wager that their girlfriends will be faithful to them no matter what the circumstance.  Mozart’s beautiful melodies and timeless topics give us no choice but to look and laugh at ourselves honestly. You’ll want to find out who wins this wager.

Performances are March 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m., and March 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Halton Theater.

Central Piedmont Theatre is Excited to Present “Chess, The Musical!”

“Chess” is a rock musical with music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Richard Nelson based on an idea by Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War–era chess tournament between two grandmasters from America and the USSR and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.”

Barbara Rizza Mellin captures the simple elegance of natural objects in Chinese Brush Painting, the real and apparent spontaneity of the process in which a few strokes capture the beauty of a blossom, the fragility of a fallen leaf. Her works combine elements of water color paintings and calligraphic line drawings, and, yet, have their own unique look and style. Illuminate by the ArtPop Street Gallery Class of 2018

Through Illuminate, Central Piedmont’s Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery partners with the ArtPop Street Gallery’s Class of 2018 in the shared vision of bringing art to students, faculty, and the community. This collective showcase of eclectic pieces created in paint, collage, photography, stoneware, and glass reflects the diversity and depth of Charlotte’s local art. Some of the works are recognizable as those that were lit up over the city, while others are new endeavors. All reflect the aspiration and passion of the artist.

Frieze by artist Tom Stanley through December 18, 2020

   

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

Central Piedmont Theatre presents ‘Chess the Musical’

Chess the Musical “Chess the Musical” is coming to the Halton Theater Stage!

Chess is a rock musical with music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Richard Nelson based on an idea by Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters from America and the USSR and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.

From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.”

Revered as “one of the best rock scores ever produced”, by TIME Magazine, make sure you check out “this  “angry, difficult, demanding and rewarding show” which is sure to entertain.
