Off-Campus Database Access Now Working
All issues with off-campus database access have now been resolved.

Please be aware that some students are currently experiencing issues when attempting to access library databases from off-campus.
We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
End of Semester Hours
Beginning December 12, CPCC Libraries will have shortened hours. From December 12 to December 18, Central Campus Library will be open from 7:30am to 5pm. It will observe abbreviated hours on December 17 from 7:30am to 12pm. All other campus libraries will be closed during this time.
From December 19, 2013 to January 1, 2014, all CPCC Libraries will be closed for the holiday season. Central Campus Library will reopen on January 2, 2014.
Civil War 150 Exhibit at the Library
A new traveling exhibit at the Central Piedmont Community College Library: Central Campus focuses on major events during the Civil War. Experience the bloodiest battles in the history of the United States through the eyes of major political figures, soldiers, families and freedmen. By virtue of letters, personal accounts and images, learn how people grappled with the end of slavery, the nature of democracy and citizenship, the human toll of civil war, and the role of a president in wartime. Come to the Central Campus Library, beginning on November 5, 2013, to explore the exhibition “Civil War 150” for yourself.

Apply Now for the Library Scholarship!
The Theresa Thompson Library Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for currently enrolled students pursuing a two-year degree at the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). It is made possible through library fundraising projects. The deadline for submitting an application for the Spring Semester 2014 scholarship is November 22nd.
To be eligible for the CPCC Library Scholarship, applicants must:
- be a full-time student, currently enrolled in 12 credit hours or more in an approved degree program leading to a two-year degree
- have completed at least one full-time semester at CPCC within the past two semesters, excluding the current semester, at the time of application
- have a cumulative CPCC GPA of 2.5 or higher. A copy of current transcript must be submitted with application
- submit a completed application with supporting documents
- write an original 550 to 750 word essay on how the CPCC libraries have helped you achieve your educational goals thus far
- submit a letter of recommendation from a CPCC faculty or staff member that you have known within the last two years

U.S. Government Websites Impacted By the Federal Government Shutdown
As of October 1, 2013, the federal government is experiencing a partial shutdown. Due to this shutdown, a number of useful government websites will be unavailable entirely until the shutdown ends.
The following sites are no longer available, as of this writing. This list may not be complete:
- Library of Congress – http://www.loc.gov/
- NASA – http://www.nasa.gov
- National Park Service – http://www.nps.gov/
- U.S. Census Bureau – http://www.census.gov/
- Federal Trade Commission – http://www.ftc.gov/
A large number of government sites are still up and running, but are displaying the following message:
“Due to the lapse in government funding, only web sites supporting excepted functions will be updated unless otherwise funded. As a result, the information on this website may not be up to date, the transactions submitted via the website may not be processed, and the agency may not be able to respond to inquiries until appropriations are enacted.”
The following sites are not currently being regularly updated. If the government shutdown continues for a prolonged amount of time, the following websites (among others) could eventually contain outdated information. This list is not complete.

- Environmental Protection Agency – http://www.epa.gov

Keep in mind that the government shutdown only affects FEDERAL (United States) government websites. All state websites, including North Carolina sites, are not directly impacted by the shutdown.

New Resources: VAST Academic Video Online and Ambrose Video
Need a video clip to add to your class presentation? CPCC Libraries have recently acquired access to two new video resources that can help!
VAST: Academic Video Online is a large multidisciplinary database of searchable streaming video. Subject areas covered include art, architecture, business, counseling and therapy, dance, economics, education, ethnic studies, ethnography, gay and lesbian studies, health, history, humanities, language and literature, opera, philosophy, political science, rehabilitation and sports medicine, psychology, religion, science, theater, musical performance, women’s studies, and more. Documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and news reels, field recordings, commercials, and raw footage are among the video formats provided.
Ambrose Video has a collection of more than 1200 video clips and full programs, including 37 BBC Shakespeare Plays. Subject areas covered include economics, fine arts, history, literature, medicine, philosophy, political science, science and social studies.
