Toolin’ Around: Blackboard Attendance Quizzes

Welcome back to Toolin’ Around! We have something that may help keep your attendance reports up to date.

Toolin’ Around Tip: Creating a simple quiz in Blackboard will allow students to be marked as present in your attendance reporting. [Only for curriculum courses marked as Online or Hybrid]

[This simple attendance “Quiz” does not substitute for student submissions of scholarly activities and is setup only for attendance reporting]

Benefits? This helps streamline your workload as you don’t have to manually mark students present. You can also utilize an assignment or any other assessment as long as it has a grading column. The idea is that you are using the quiz assessment as your attendance/roll call for each week, which will connect to your attendance report automatically (again as long as you have an Online or Hybrid curriculum course).

NOTE: You still are required to certify your attendance reports in your Attendance Entry each week.

Creating an Attendance Quiz that updates your Attendance Reporting: For Curriculum Online or Hybrid courses only

Toolin’ Around: Panopto Analytics

Hope you are having a great week, here is our helpful gem for this edition of “Toolin’ Around”!

Today’s tip is brought to you by Jeff Jarvis, Media Systems Project Manager, ITS – Digital Media Services. Jeff had some great points in the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence’s latest virtual Workshop about Panopto and its many features; one of which is the ability to check analytics and statistics in your videos.

Toolin’ Around Tip: Get data and reports from Panopto videos and folders to reflect upon participant engagement and session statistics.

Benefits? Want to know if someone specific has watched a video? Or where in your recording people tend to stop watching? Get detailed reports on audience engagement and comprehensive insights into viewing behavior for every video on your Panopto portal. Panopto helps you get the most out of your media by providing minute-by-minute analytics for each of your videos.

See How Videos Are Performing Across Your Library

Along with individual viewer insights, Panopto’s video analytics suite provides reports on groups of videos in a specific folder. With session statistics, you can also monitor the activity, health, and size of your entire video library

Toolin’ Around: Screen Zoom Shortcut

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Use your mouse scroll + shortcut keys to quickly improve visibility of instructional content on the screen–whether teaching from the podium on campus or in WebEx online.

Benefits? Students can follow along more easily if they can see the content with greater clarity. With the click of a button and quick scroll up or down, you can draw your learners’ attention to points of focus with ease.

Toolin’ Around: Attendance Reports

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

Today’s tip is brought to you by Kavita Bhambri of Outreach and Recruitment. Thank you for this contribution to the CTLE, Kavita!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Extract data from WebEx attendance reports to reflect upon participant engagement.

Benefits? As instructors, we strive to encourage attendance at and engagement during our WebEx class meetings. Reports show us the who, how, and and for how long. These data points can help us ponder:

  • Are the same students attending every week? Are there struggling students in the class whom I can contact to encourage participation? Do some students view the recordings of meetings instead? How can I find out that information?
  • Do participants exit early? Is it possible to incorporate more active learning content (EX: polling, quizzes, presentations, class conversations, breakout group work)? Should I distribute a survey to find out?
  • Which users leave, return, leave, and return during a single session? Which connection methods are they using? Do they need tech support? NOTE: You can view “Browser” data, as well as similar attendance report data, from the Bb MEETS plugin attendance reports (as shown in the image below) vs. the cpcc.webex.com platform. Kavita’s tutorials are from the website-based platform.

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Select from within “Forum Settings” to prohibit students from viewing other threads until they post their own.

Benefits? This simple setting can create big results: more original critical thinking in threads from each student prior to asking them to engage with and reply to one another’s threads! In turn, we as instructors may enjoy reviewing them for evaluation more too.

Toolin’ Around: Visual Rosters

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Create a visual roster for your class to set a more inviting and personalized learning environment.

Benefits? Faculty can use these to put a face with the name as they field electronic communications and digital grading. Students can enjoy this roster as they interact in online and hybrid learning exercises together. Remote learning can feel more rich, vibrant, and engaging when we better “see” one another.

Toolin’ Around: WebEx Search

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Help your students get the most out of WebEx class meeting recordings with the “search” function.

Benefits? The streamed recording contains a transcript and search field. Should students miss a session or want to watch again, they can enter a term of interest. For example, if they want to find out if you gave instruction on a certain assignment, they could enter key words related to it. The streamed session also contains a chat synopsis and participant list on the left side of the viewing screen.

Toolin’ Around: WebEx Auto-Record

Welcome to the CTLE’s 1st “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts, you ask?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Utilize the auto-record setting for WebEx meetings.

Benefits? Instructors can reduce the anxiety of forgetting to click “record” once they start a WebEx class meeting by using the auto-record checkbox option. This allows them to ensure the class meeting is captured for students’ future viewing in the event they were not able to opt in or if they want to re-watch it later.
