Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program

Central Piedmont Community College is proud to present the Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program, a distinctive initiative designed to cultivate leadership skills, foster intellectual curiosity, and promote critical thinking among its students. This program is named in honor of Dr. Ruth Shaw, the college’s second president, whose generosity and vision have made this opportunity possible.

Program Objectives:
The Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program aims to:

  • Connect students with one another and a network of community mentors.
  • Inspire students to take on leadership roles and celebrate their achievements.
  • Nurture student leaders by encouraging critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving.
  • Foster awareness of the significant roles and contributions of women in society.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants for the Ruth G. Shaw Scholars Program must:

  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Have completed two semesters of coursework at Central Piedmont before the Fall ’24 semester.
  • Be enrolled in for-college-credit classes for the entire academic year (Fall ’24/Spring ’25).
  • Identify as female or have demonstrated support for females in higher education, regardless of the applicant’s sex.
  • Be available to attend all program gatherings.

Program Structure:

  • The program is exclusive to 12 students.
  • Participants will engage in two monthly sessions on Fridays: one with mentors and a separate scholars-only session.
  • In April, scholars will present their capstone projects, summarizing their experiences within the program.
  • Participants should be prepared to schedule their classes to accommodate Friday program meetings.

Application Process:
Apply by April 14 for the Ruth G. Shaw Scholars Program:

  1. Sign in and submit the 2024/2025 general scholarship application at Central Piedmont Scholarships.
  2. Complete the Ruth G. Shaw Scholarship application at Ruth G Shaw Scholarship Application.

Additional Information:
Applicants may be invited to interview with the scholarship selection committee as part of the application process.

tutoringThe Ruth G. Shaw Center for Academic Success & Excellence welcomes you to the spring 2024 semester. We are excited to help you experience success at the highest level. Here are a few updates to assist you in navigating our unit for support.

  • Access to Academic Support – Access the ASC Academic Support platform and make appointments through Brightspace! Our updated ASC website provides simple & clear instructions on how to make appointments, access online virtual sessions, use Brainfuse, view the ASC calendar, and more.
  • In-Person Appointments – Make an in-person appointment with an ASC tutor on campus (Central, Cato, or Levine.)
  • Virtual ASC Appointments – Make a virtual appointment with an ASC tutor today.
  • Brainfuse Online Appointments – Utilize Brainfuse. Each curriculum-enrolled student receives 200 minutes of time to use Brainfuse for after-hours and weekend academic support.
  • Additional Faculty Tutors – There are additional faculty providing outside tutoring from class time at various campuses. Availability varies. Click here to view the list of those offering additional academic support this upcoming spring 2024 semester.

Applications Available for 2019-2020 Ruth G. Shaw Scholars Women’s Leadership Program

Applications are now available for the Ruth G. Shaw Women’s Leadership Program, a women’s leadership/mentorship program offered in partnership with the Central Piedmont Foundation and Student Life. This unique student program aims to:

  • Connect women students to one another and to a supportive network of community mentors
  • Inspire women students to assume positions of leadership and to celebrate their individual and collective achievements
  • Nurture female student leaders by encouraging and demonstrating critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving strategies
  • Foster a deeper awareness of the many roles women play and their contributions to society

The program is limited to 10-12 female students who will participate in sessions, both with RGS mentors and separately with scholars. Through monthly luncheons and guided conversations with community mentors, the Ruth G. Shaw Women’s Leadership Program offers:

  • Interaction with college leaders, faculty, staff, and alumnae
  • Personal and professional skill development
  • Hands-on leadership development
  • Recognition of achievement. As a culminating event and in collaboration with faculty, staff, and mentors, participants will plan and execute an annual spring capstone presentation about their experience in the program.
