Planning to Take Online Classes? There’s a New Process to Prepare.

Are you planning to take an online course for the first time at Central Piedmont? If you’re new to the college’s online learning – or have not successfully completed an online class here at the college within the last three years – the Online Learning Intro must be completed before you can register for online classes. Here’s what to know:

  • Thinking of taking Central Piedmont’s online classes for the first time? The college now has the Online Learning Intro and it must be completed before registering for our online classes. Don’t wait until the day you register, complete it today so you’re ready to go.
  • Unsure if taking online classes is the best option for you? Complete Central Piedmont’s Online Learning Intro to find out now.

Please note: If you were admitted to Central Piedmont after summer 2018, have never registered for curriculum classes of any kind, and are attempting to only register for 100% online classes, please contact the ITS Helpdesk immediately at 704.330.5000 to set up your Blackboard account. Once your account is created, please return to the Online Learning Intro website and follow the instructions for accessing the orientation.

You’re Invited to Hear Harvard University Professor Discuss Today’s Economy in the Halton Theater on Feb. 27

The Central Piedmont Community College Economics Department invites faculty, staff and students to attend a presentation by Dr. N. Gregory Mankiw, the Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University, in the Halton Theater, on February 27, at 10 a.m. Dr. Mankiw will discuss the current state of today’s economy. The event is FREE to Central Piedmont faculty, staff and students with a college I.D.

Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, and in more widely accessible forums, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.

In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston and New York. From 2003 to 2005 he served as Chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Jean Cauthen’s work is distinctive for its vivid but complex color relationships and joie de vivre. Beneath the color lies references to past artists, eras and movements, adding layers of meaning to her illuminated colors.

While her subject often derives from the past, the form – the sea of small, chaotic shapes to create a harmonious whole – reflects a more modern gestalt. Within that sea are complex relationships and contradictions in which she expresses order, beauty and joy. Beyond the message of order, Jean hopes the viewer responds on a visceral level to these combinations.

Jean grew up in Naples, Italy, New Orleans and the Carolinas and currently works in the Charlotte area.

Service-Learning in Puerto Rico

Ten Central Piedmont students and one Service-Learning Coordinator will spend spring break volunteering in Puerto Rico, as part of Central Piedmont’s International Alternative Spring Break. The island of Puerto Rico is considered a “commonwealth” of the United States, so students do not need their passports to travel. Our dedicated team will work at an orphanage and help rebuild communities hit by Hurricane Maria.

Central Piedmont Will Offer New Degree Program in Polysomnography

Central Piedmont Community College will launch a new associate degree program in polysomnography (sleep study) when the 2019 fall semester begins in August.

The polysomnography curriculum will prepare students, working in conjunction with a physician, to perform sleep studies and provide a comprehensive clinical evaluation and treatment required for sleep-related disorders. Graduates of the program will find employment opportunities in hospitals, freestanding sleep centers, medical equipment companies, medical device sales, education, research, healthcare management, and interdisciplinary patient management roles.

“The field of sleep technology is growing at a rapid pace, with estimated beginning salaries around $52,000 per year,” explained Dr. Auburne Hutchins, chair of the new Central Piedmont program. “This program will be one of only 15 associate degree programs in the country and the only program in the Charlotte area. We plan to open with 10 to 12 students.”

Your natural hair is your crowning glory. It has been with you your whole life, traveling through the complicated but beautiful growth of self. The story of your hair is a beautiful narrative that is all your own. We would love to hear about your journey to and through acceptance and pride of your natural hair.

Bridging – Upcoming Workshops with Sensoria Featured Artist Andrea Vail

Throughout Spring 2019, Vail will facilitate “Bridging,” a multi-campus, collaborative, and large-scale fabric project culminating in its installation in the Overcash Lobby for Sensoria. “Bridging” will be a tangible representation of Central Piedmont’s diverse community: coming from unique experiences, converging at Central Piedmont, then venturing onward. Rooted in the intercultural and generational traditions of patterned textiles, this work, embellished with palm-sized tassels and printed with student-sourced imagery, is both inclusive of individual identities and realized as one unified fabric.

Free Health Insurance Counseling at the Single Stop Office

Each Thursday between 1-4 p.m., the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy is offering free Health Care Insurance Counseling at the Single Stop office. These appointments can assist students that may be eligible for special enrollments through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

A few examples of special enrollment scenarios may include:

  • You lost your insurance (through your job, Medicaid or private plan)
  • You got a new job or lost a job
  • You turned 26 and can’t stay on your parent’s insurance plan
