Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program

Central Piedmont Community College is proud to present the Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program, a distinctive initiative designed to cultivate leadership skills, foster intellectual curiosity, and promote critical thinking among its students. This program is named in honor of Dr. Ruth Shaw, the college’s second president, whose generosity and vision have made this opportunity possible.

Apply by April 14.

Program Objectives:
The Ruth G. Shaw Leadership Program aims to:

  • Connect students with one another and a network of community mentors.
  • Inspire students to take on leadership roles and celebrate their achievements.
  • Nurture student leaders by encouraging critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving.
  • Foster awareness of the significant roles and contributions of women in society.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants for the Ruth G. Shaw Scholars Program must:

  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Have completed two semesters of coursework at Central Piedmont before the Fall ’24 semester.
  • Be enrolled in for-college-credit classes for the entire academic year (Fall ’24/Spring ’25).
  • Identify as female or have demonstrated support for females in higher education, regardless of the applicant’s sex.
  • Be available to attend all program gatherings.

Program Structure:

  • The program is exclusive to 12 students.
  • Participants will engage in two monthly sessions on Fridays: one with mentors and a separate scholars-only session.
  • In April, scholars will present their capstone projects, summarizing their experiences within the program.
  • Participants should be prepared to schedule their classes to accommodate Friday program meetings.

Ashley Ezell: A Story of Resilience and Transformation

Ashley EzellAshley Ezell’s story is a vivid testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the impact of community support. Choosing Central Piedmont was a turning point in Ashley’s life when uncertainty turned into opportunity. “I had plans, but life had its twists. Finding myself at Central Piedmont felt right,” Ashley explains, highlighting the significance of supportive guidance right from the start.

Taking off on a journey initially aimed at nursing, Ashley found herself navigating profound personal loss, which led to a reevaluation of her career path. It was during this introspective period, heightened by the pandemic’s challenges that Ashley chose to pivot to Human Service Technology. “Losing close ones and facing harsh realities made me reflect on what I wanted. It wasn’t just about a career but making a meaningful difference,” she shares.

Central Piedmont has offered Ashley more than just an education; it has provided a community. “The connections I’ve made here, they’re more than peers; they’re family. The support and encouragement from professors and classmates have been unwavering,” Ashley states.

Yet, Ashley’s journey has been filled with additional challenges, including overcoming the stigma of being formerly incarcerated and managing a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, depressive type. These experiences have made her even more determined to help troubled youth, showing through her life that your past doesn’t decide your future. “Kids are our future, and I aim to help them see beyond their current situation,” she asserts.

To those embarking on their journey at Central Piedmont, Ashley offers a piece of advice rooted in her own experiences: “Never give up. It’s about focusing on your dreams and working tirelessly towards them. Remember, you’re in charge of your destiny.”

From overcoming personal and academic challenges to setting sights on empowering future generations, Ashley Ezell stands as a beacon of hope and an inspiration to many.

Twelfth Night Auditions

twelfth night logoCentral Piedmont Community College is excited to invite students to audition for the spring production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” This is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring actors to showcase their talents and participate in a collegiate theater production.

Audition Details:

  • Dates: Auditions will be held on Tues., Mar. 20, and Wed., Mar. 21.
  • Time: From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attendance is required on only one of the two days.
  • Location: Overcash 300, Central Campus of Central Piedmont.
  • Duration: Participants should plan to be available for approximately two hours.

Audition Requirements:

  • Reading Scenes: The auditions will involve reading scenes from Twelfth Night, which will be provided at the venue.
  • Shakespearean Monologues: While not mandatory, participants are welcome to perform a Shakespearean monologue if they choose.
  • Additional Talents: If you have unique skills such as singing, playing an instrument, or any other talent that may enhance your audition, you are encouraged to demonstrate these abilities.

National TRIO Day 2024

Trio Day volunteerrsOn Feb. 24, 2024, TRIO Student Support Services at Central Piedmont Community College marked the 38th anniversary of National TRIO Day. This special occasion was celebrated with a day of service at Nourish Up, previously known as Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays, located in Charlotte.

Participants in the event filled food orders for local food pantries and sorted through donated food items provided by the community. This effort served our neighbors’ immediate needs and highlighted the spirit of giving and collaboration among students.

Congress designated National TRIO Day in 1986 and observes it on the fourth Saturday of February each year. This day recognizes and raises awareness of the TRIO programs, which offer invaluable educational opportunities to students worldwide.

Central Piedmont Theatre presents Tracks by Peter Tarsi

Tracks posterA group of strangers meets in a dirty subway station, all claiming to be in different cities. They soon learn the unfortunate truth: They are all dead. Since subway stations have opposite platforms, they reason that one train must be bound for Heaven; the other bound for Hell. But which platform are they on? They reflect upon their lives, sharing their virtues and vices, hoping to figure out which platform is which. As the subway train finally approaches, they must make a choice. Do they stay and ponder their actions further? Or do they board the train to their final destination?

Central Piedmont Theatre proudly presents two vastly different takes on this production. The M Train show is directed by Carly McMinn. The D Train show is directed by James Duke.

Both versions feature casts fully comprised of Central Piedmont students.

purpose chatsThe Purpose Chats program, a part of the UMentoring Network within the Office of Mentoring and Coaching, offers a variety of empowering activities and services designed to support student growth, including:

  • Workshops: Interactive sessions on various topics to foster personal development
  • Coaching: One-on-one support to guide students through challenges.
  • Mentorship: Building relationships with experienced mentors for guidance and support
  • Social and Cultural Activities: Events that enrich the college experience and broaden perspectives
  • Empowerment Activities: Engagements designed to boost confidence and self-awareness
  • Discussions and Panels: Opportunities to explore diverse viewpoints and gain insights
  • Leadership and Research Projects: Practical experiences to enhance resumes and build skill sets.

Join us monthly from 4-5:30 p.m. at Central Campus, starting in February and wrapping up the last week of April.
