Central Piedmont Galleries Announces New Exhibits

To kick off the new year, The Central Piedmont Art Galleries are pleased to present two new exhibitions.

Overcash Gallery:

“Structure and Void” by Richard Elaver

“Structure and Void” is an investigation into surface, structure, and systematized randomness. The work re-presents patterns from nature in organic forms and fluid surfaces. Those forms are deconstructed into cellular elements and reconstructed in a variety of materials using generative software and digital fabrication techniques.

Richard ElaverWhen: January 13 – March 12, 2020, Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Artist Lecture: January 30, 3:30 p.m. – Tate Hall
Opening Reception: January 30, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. – Overcash Gallery
Where: Overcash Art Gallery, Overcash Center, 1206 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte, NC 2820

Ross Gallery:

“I Am My Things and My Things Are Me” by Allison Tierney

Allison Tierney’s work relies heavily on painting and a decorative aesthetic to discover personal identity, comment on consumerism, and investigate the divide between craft and art. Through the act of repurposing, Tierney is able to transform unwanted items into colorful and optimistic works of art that give value to the value-less.

Central Piedmont Dance Theatre to Present ‘The Moon: A Little Theatre of the World’

The Moon

Central Piedmont Dance Theatre is excited to present “The Moon: A little Theatre of the World.”  This modern opera by Carl Orff is based on a  fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm, of the consequences of greed and possession upsetting the natural order of the world.

Choreographed by Dance Program Chair Clay Daniel, and conducted by Arts Division Chair Dr. Alan Yamamoto, “The Moon” will feature moving sets, magical theatrics, and a wonderful lesson in the enchanting musical depths of Orff’s rarely-performed masterwork!

Performances are November 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Halton Theater. Central Piedmont students with a valid Central Piedmont ID will receive FREE admission. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for all non-Central Piedmont students with a valid student ID.  Visit tix.cpcc.edu or call the SunTrust Box Office at ext. 6534 for more information.

Central Piedmont Opera Theatre to Present ‘Orphee et Euridice,’ Students Attend FREE!

Orphee et Euridice

The Central Piedmont Music Department is excited to announce their Fall 2019 opera, “Orphee et Euridice!”

Gluck’s second adaptation of the Orpheus mythological legend took place in Paris, France in 1774.  In our present day, the first version, which premiered in Vienna in 1692 is more often performed.  Due to the additional beautiful vocal and dance music and the title role being performed by a full lyric tenor voice, Central Piedmont Opera has chosen to produce the Paris Version of this opera.

The presence of dance is especially strong in the Paris Version, and the additional music is stunning.  Central Piedmont Opera is pleased to be collaborating with Central Piedmont Dance and Nouveau Süd to bring you this ‘feast for the senses’ known as “Orphée et Euridice.”

Performances are November 22nd and 23 at 7:30 p.m., and November 24 at 2:30 p.m., in Halton Theater, Central Campus. Central Piedmont students can attend FREE with a valid Central Piedmont student ID. For more information, visit tix.cpcc.edu or call the SunTrust Box Office at ext. 6534.

Moments from our lives pass in a blur and tend to be forgotten. We are constantly moving, talking, watching, sending, and working – so much so that losing sight of ourselves is a shared reality. What happens, however when we slow down? When we sit? When those moments are stilled and remembered in a photograph?

Early in the semester, Atlanta-based photographer Melissa Alexander used her camera to capture the students that embody Central Piedmont’s campus life through portraiture. These portraits have transformed Ross Gallery into the exhibition titled Blur: A Community Portrait Project that reclaims not only our time, but ourselves.

$HAN Wallace’s ‘cutXcopy’ Comes to the Gorelick Gallery at Levine

SHAN WallavePhotographer $HAN Wallace presents “cutXcopy” at the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery Levine Campus
Now through December 13, 2019
Artist Lecture, Thursday, September 26, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., LV 2150

A conversation with photographer $HAN Wallace about her life and inspirations for her exhibit “cutXcopy.”

$HAN is an award-winning photographer, artist, and freedom fighter from East Baltimore. The Baltimore City Paper named $HAN Wallace Best Photographer (2016) and Best Solo Show (2017).  Recently, $HAN lectured at Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art-Hodges Taylor as part of the Charlotte Millennial Art Program. $HAN is a current artist-in-residence at The Roll Up CLT.

Inspired by the service of social change and the social power of art, and harsh realities rooted in racial and economic divides during her upbringing in poverty, $HAN uses the lens to document communities of the African diaspora. Her work conveys and reveals the social, cultural, and political narratives of black life serving as photographic documentation and archive of Blackness.

Artist $HAN Wallace pulls from her own collection of photographs to piece and layer imagery of landscapes, textures and people to create new narratives. Using collage techniques as a means of addressing topics like race, class and politics, $HAN is able to communicate a sense of new worlds that feel both foreign and familiar.

Gorelick Gallery at Harper Campus to Feature ‘Frieze’ by Tom Stanley

Frieze, by Tom StanleyTom Stanley
Exhibited with works of art from the collection of Bill and the late Patty Gorelick
Now through July 31, 2020

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

On view March 15 – May 2, 2019, Overcash Lobby

Andrea Vail is the featured visual artist for Sensoria 2019! Throughout Spring 2019, Vail facilitated “Bridging,” a multi-campus, collaborative, and large-scale fabric project culminating in its installation in the Overcash Lobby for Sensoria. “Bridging” is a tangible representation of Central Piedmont’s diverse community: coming from unique experiences, converging at Central Piedmont Community College, then venturing onward. Rooted in the intercultural and generational traditions of patterned textiles, this work, embellished with palm-sized tassels and printed with student-sourced imagery, is both inclusive of individual identities and realized as one unified fabric.

Thank you to Red Heart and Decor Print.
