STEM Scholars Academy Event & Check Presentation, September 6, 2022

Honeywell, a global leader in aerospace, building technologies, performance materials, and technologies, has made a $1-million gift commitment to Central Piedmont Community College to establish the Honeywell STEM Scholars Academy at the college. The gift was announced on Sept. 6 and will come to Central Piedmont in annual installments of $200,000 over the next five years.

The Honeywell STEM Scholars Academy will boost diversity among students enrolled in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programs at the college who are pursuing a certification, degree, and careers in a high-demand STEM-related field. The college plans to involve 100 students in the academy, beginning in fall 2022, and seeks to engage 125 additional students each year, over the next four years.

As a Honeywell STEM Scholars Academy student, participants will have the opportunity to focus on one of three STEM academic pathways at Central Piedmont – engineering, health sciences, or information technology – and have access to a variety of Central Piedmont’s student support services, including tutoring, coaching, peer mentoring, career counseling, and more.

In addition to having the opportunity to take advantage of Central Piedmont’s many academic resources, academy students will receive STEM education and training opportunities through the Carolina Youth Coalition, a non-profit organization that prepares high-achieving, under-resourced students to enter, excel in, and graduate from college so they can become full participants in society. Interactive art exhibit “Reclaimed Memories” invites you to create stories, art

Black and white hand drawn artwork of a woman in an old fashioned carA new interactive exhibit will open in the Ross Gallery at Central Campus on Aug. 15.

A stray photograph in a thrift store or flea market depicts an unknown person from the past. Their dress, their hair, and the discoloration of the photograph indicates a person from the past. Questions such as, “Who were they?,” and “What is their story?,” come to mind the longer we take in the image. While for many of us it may be easy to set the photograph down and continue on with our own lives, artist Eva Crawford reclaims these images from the 1940s and 1950s, giving them new life by recreating them as life-size drawings.

Following the passing of her father in January of 2021, Crawford sought to create a body of work focused on the preservation of memory. Crawford reclaims lost memories through the use of portraiture, transforming antique film photographs into large-scale drawings and paintings that invite the viewer to create their own stories and memories about the individuals in the artwork.

“Reclaimed Memories” also includes an interactive station with antique photographs. This station encourages gallery visitors to create their own memories, stories, and artwork about the people in the photographs. The stories will be collected and displayed as part of the exhibition.

COVID Contact Tracing Update

Starting Monday, June 20, the college will discontinue contact tracing for reports of positive COVID cases. Given the significant decrease in number of serious cases and severity of symptoms of those affected by COVID, this follows suit with the Mecklenburg County Health Department (discontinued contact tracing in January) and numerous other colleges and universities.

Anyone who has tested positive should continue to report their positive results to WeCare@cpcc.edu for tracking purposes, and they will receive an auto-response about how to proceed.  However, if anyone has questions about COVID, they should refer to the CDC’s guidelines around COVID or email WeCare@cpcc.edu.

As a reminder, if you test positive, you should refrain from coming to campus for five days from when you tested positive or symptom onset, so long as your symptoms are improving (you are NOT required to obtain a negative test before returning). If you are symptomatic, you should obtain a negative PCR test before returning to campus. Additional information about COVID protocols for positive cases, exposures, and symptoms can be found on the CDC’s website.

The Cato Campus Law Library Has Moved!

After 15 years at the Cato Campus, we fondly bid farewell to the Law Library – affectionately known by many as CLAW. The paralegal collection has been relocated to its original home on the Central Campus and will be housed in the new library. Access to these print resources will be available beginning July 5, 2022, when the new library is scheduled to open for service.
Central Piedmont students and employees have access to our online legal resources from both on and off campus. Community users can access available online resources by visiting any campus library.
