Safari Tech Books Online provides access to a valuable variety of IT related titles from leading publishers. Titles cover areas such as web design and development, programming, graphic design and more. Our current trial offers access to the full database. Though funding constraints will not allow us to purchase full access once the trial ends, we would choose an option that is more focused on the needs of CPCC students and staff.

On-campus computers will be able to access the trial with no need to login. Those accessing the trial from off-campus should use the following login:

New Online Reference Collection: Credo Reference

Who you gonna call… when you have a research question?

A librarian’s standby for quick answers was historically the reference collection. Over the last ten years the print reference collection at CPCC has been cut to 25% of its previous size. To fill the gap we have online reference resources that can be accessed from any computer with web access. Find a list of reference resources at in the Research Databases section of our website under Reference.

The newest database that is specific to reference is Credo Reference which contains digital copies of 100 encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases covering a range of subjects from literature, to law, to science and more. All titles are full-text searchable. Credo Reference also offers the ability to seamlessly search within other library resources such as the CPCC Library Catalog and Academic Search Premier making it a great place to begin your research. Download a Word document listing all 100 reference titles within Credo.

Taking ENG 113? Need sources that offer literary criticism? The CPCC Libraries have added a new research database full of literary criticism called Salem Literature. Using this resource, students can search analytical essays (both classic criticism and original analysis) on authors and works central to literary study.

Included are classic and contemporary authors such as Toni Morrison, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Jane Austen. Classic works covered include Death of a Salesman, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Joy Luck Club.

In addition, the library has received a set of books that complement this database. These print titles can be found in the Library Catalog. So, you have the option of finding literary criticism in print books and online.

The Library also offers access to two other research databases that focus on this subject area, Literature Resource Center and Literary Reference Center.

Delicious Update: Math, Tech, and Design

This week’s Delicious links offer some Math, Computer Courses from Harvard Extension, tech talks from Google and a little design thrown in for good measure.

The Wolfram Mathworld site offers encyclopedic entries on different math terms and functions. Each entry provides information on the selected topic as well as a list of linked references. Another helpful feature in each entry is the ‘cite this as’ area which provides a citation of the page. Search alphabetically or by subject area.

Find this and other math resources in the Math tag.

In the Computers tag and also in the Tutorials tag, watch a series of video lectures on computers and the internet from instructor David Malan at Harvard Extension. The course “Understanding Computers and the Internet” arms students with a new vocabulary and readies them for further exploration of computers and the Internet. Topics include hardware, software, the Internet, multimedia, security, website development, programming, and dotcoms. This course is designed both for those with little, if any, computer experience and for those who use a computer every day. The videos of the lectures are available in QuickTime or flash formats. Oh, and did I mention- they are FREE.

Take a look at the two new links in the Videos tag. The first is from Google; “Tech talks at Google”. *There are a large number of technical talks at Google. Many of these are videotaped, and some are made available for external viewing.* Topics of the talks range from “What is the Mind?” to “So you want to be a programming rock star.” Fun!

Too much Tech? Check out the second video site added. It is from WGBH Forum Network. “The WGBH Forum Network is an audio and video streaming Website dedicated to curating and serving live and on-demand lectures given by some of the world’s foremost scholars, authors, artists, scientists, policy makers and community leaders. These events are hosted by world-class cultural and educational organizations in Boston and beyond.” A lecture from artist Nathalie Miebach, offers a look into her art practice of gathering meteorological data that she uses to create sculptural weavings.  Or listen to a lecture from Jacqueline Olds and Richard Schwartz as they discuss the previously un-reported American epidemic of living in social isolation in their new book, The Lonely American: Drifting Apart in the 21st Century.

And finally, some great new links to websites for our Interior Designers and other design fanciers. A link for a custom modern furniture designer in Boston, MA, as well as a site for modern and contemporary lighting fixtures supplier, and last but not least; Karim Rashid’s website showcasing his world renowned designs. These are additions to the growing collection of Interior Design websites in the Interior_Design tag.
