National Library Workers Day — April 14

In conjunction with National Library Week, April 12-19, TODAY is designated as National Library Workers Day (NLWD)! National Library Worker’s Day was first implemented in 2003 to honor library employees service and contributions.

Many people are unaware of the work and team effort it takes behind the scene to select, purchase, and get a library resource on the shelf. ALL CPCC library employees work hard every day, all year long to ensure that we provide the best possible resources, services and customer service with a spirit and attitude of EXCELLENCE!

Throughout the month to show your appreciation, we encourage you to take a moment to stop by the library (or send an email, drop off a small token of appreciation, take them to lunch, etc.) to let a library employee know that they are appreciated. In addition, you can check out the display at Central campus, which includes a selection of “staff picks”, employee photos, interesting library facts and trivia. A thank you note card can be picked up at the circulation and reference desks on Central campus.

The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association is also accepting nominations for “star” library employees. Nominations for CPCC library staff can be submitted online. All entries will be featured until June 30, 2009.

We appreciate your support! “Libraries Work Because We Do!”

Dispelling Myths and Stereotypes about Islam and Muslims

Does the mere sight or sound of words like Ramadan, jihad, or Muslim cause you anxiety? If so, you could be suffering from “Islamophobia.”

In our efforts to develop tolerance and respect for each other’s culture, religion and heritage, we invite you to join us for a special presentation and discussion on dispelling age-old myths, misconceptions and stereotypes about Islam and Muslims. Following an introduction on the importance of religious understanding by Dr. Chris Brawley, CPCC students Abrar Alkusaimi and Shaista Balqees will discuss common stereotypes and share personal experiences associated with being Muslim in the U.S.

This presentation and discussion will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, from 11:00 a.m. -12:15 p.m. in PD 304. (Above the CPCC Bookstore, 3rd floor)

A coordinating exhibit featuring Islamic clothing, cultural artifacts, information and books about Islam will be on display in the Central Campus library until the end of the semester.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. This program is being sponsored in collaboration with the CPCC Libraries. For more information or to schedule your classes, please contact Retha Hall at 704.330.6113.
