Toolin’ Around: Brightspace’s Quiz Submission Views and Student Access to Those Views

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Submission Views determine what students see when viewing a completed quiz. By default, the Submission View only shows students their score on the quiz. However, you can set additional Submission Views that allow students to see additional information, such as correct answers or question feedback, for a set period of time. Central Piedmont’s own Kristin Randles is going to show you how.

Benefits?

  • Submission views can be created to allow students to go back and review a submitted quiz. Customizing the submission view allows instructors to choose what information the student sees upon completing the quiz, as well as what they can see when they go back to review a quiz.
  • The default submission view shows the overall score to the student (when they submit their quiz) and nothing else. To release more information to students (i.e. feedback, their submitted answers, the answers to each question, class averages and statistics, etc.) you need to either edit the default submission view or set up an additional submission view.
  • Additional Views can be created with a specified release date and time that allows instructors to release information, or answers, after a certain time. For example, an Additional View could be created for after all students have submitted the quiz (i.e., after the quiz is closed) to allow students to view which questions they answered correctly and/or incorrectly, as well as answers to questions.

Toolin’ Around: Brightspace’s New Assignment Experience

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: The New Assignment Experience streamlines the process of creating assignments for your courses. This new iteration saves the instructor time as they create their assignments, also allowing them to focus on the content rather than the logistics of grade item association.

Benefits?

  • Instructors can now create an assignment without worrying if they need to create or link a grade item because it automatically creates and associates one to your assignment.
  • No more scrolling down the page as your properties are now divided into smaller chunked areas for a more streamlined selection process.

Toolin’ Around: Create an EVA Assessment with Release Conditions

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: It is important to create a user friendly layout for our course content to make sure our students succeed. The Enrollment Verification Activity (EVA) is a federal requirement to make sure students are officially counted in our courses. All online students must submit an assignment or quiz by a specific date in order to be officially counted in the course. Let’s take a look at creating a proper EVA assessment (quiz or assignment) while also making it as user friendly as possible for our student’s success with Brightspace’s Release Condition feature.

Benefits?

  • Using Brightspace’s Release Condition, we (the instructors) can make sure that students must complete the EVA assessment before they are able to venture into the rest of the course content.
  • The Release Condition helps prevent a scenario where your students may accidentally go directly to their course content (missing the EVA) and end up being removed from the course because they did not complete their Enrollment Verification Activity assessment.
  • The Release Condition feature can be used in many different ways than just the EVA, keep this in mind while you are designing your course!
  • The video playlist showcases both types of EVA assessments (Quiz or Assignment) so you can study how each assessment is created.

Toolin’ Around: Brightspace Manage Dates

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Use Brightspace’s Manage Dates tool to view, bulk edit, and bulk offset the date availability (as well as set the calendar status) of all topics/modules/assessments in your Brightspace course model.

Benefits?

  • By utilizing Manage Dates you are able to take your course and streamline the process of setting up all of your course dates in one area, including the ability to set your calendar status for each item.
  • You can filter your Manage Date’s tool to sort based on tool-specific order or work with more advanced filters to work with smaller sets of objects, allowing you to be as narrow or broad with your content dates and availability.

Toolin’ Around: Google Docs Voice Typing

Welcome to another CTLE “Toolin’ Around”!

What are these posts?

They are brief, easy-to-implement tips involving the tools we use everyday with students to make our teaching lives, well, easier (and possibly even more effective).

Toolin’ Around Tip: Use the Google Docs Voice Typing tool to produce engaging Blackboard announcements for students.

Benefits?

  • By first producing a class announcement using the voice typing tool, an instructor can then use the transcript as a means to produce a composed, focused, and concise message for students. The resulting MP4 audio file can then be inserted into a Blackboard announcement (with the Google Docs transcript linked and attached as an accessible Word document).
  • Students may enjoy receiving a course update in a new way with an audio-only announcement this way. Audio-only can also amplify the human side of an instructor–tone, emphasis, well-chosen words, and personality–in a different way than text only announcements. And who does not appreciate a break from video overload right now?

Friends of the Center: Global Learning

Study Abroad Is Not on Vacation.

  • Short on time but big on creative teaching?
  • Looking for practical, manageable ways to engage your students?
  • Can global connections enhance your content and promote critical thinking?

If you answered yes to any of the above, our Friend of the Center from Global Learning, Julie Grahl, has an excellent teaching and learning resource for you to try that is user-friendly: Virtual Study Abroad.

Julie Grahl from Global Learning speaks with Shannon Blair of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence about Virtual Study Abroad

Until able to physically travel again, the study abroad experience has gone online. Rather than limit our students, this actually broadens horizons–especially for those who may have been otherwise unable to access such enrichment due to cost or time constraints.

As Julie explained to me, “Now, our faculty can give their students access to nine countries and over 60 hours of on-site footage. The short films (scenes) capture knowledgeable local guides, interviews with local professionals, and visuals created using 360 degree videography for an immersive experience.”

Think about it: Through your pandemic classroom, a student can take a walking tour of Venice, discover ancient Rome, tour the Alps, visit the Costa Rican rainforest, and see the bustling streets of India!

How?

1.) View the tutorial.  It covers everything in an easy-to-digest way taking only about 7 minutes.

2.) Gain access to the virtual study abroad site at any time with your Central Piedmont email sign up at https://360discovered.studyabroadassociation.com.

3.) Search for your class subject area or topics of interest (3 different ways).

shows three ways to find information on the site (search bar, discipline blocks, or index)

4.) Communicate to your students which scene or scenes you want them to experience (copy direct scene link as shown in yellow square or the link to the full page of scenes from the top left “Share” button). Explain any related learning activities or assessments (graded or ungraded) to students. Some examples are in the table below to get you started. Please return to this blog post and “comment” if you come up with additional inspiration to share with your colleagues.

5.) Bon voyage!

Teaching Area Sample Learning Opportunities Example Activities/Assessment
CUL students can… Explore Modena, Italy! Here, they can learn about what Americans refer to as parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, and prosciutto. Perhaps they visit a local dairy farm where cheese production begins and ends at a local market where the best lasagnas are sold. Synchronous WebEx Class Lecture: Show the scene and follow up with questions about how it connects with the Farm to Table concept as explained in the text. Extension option: Have them answer in breakouts and return with findings to report.
STEM, architecture, & construction students can… Travel to Freiburg, Germany–considered one of the most sustainable urban cities in the world! They can learn about military barracks converted to modern urban housing, Hotel Freiburg and its energy sources, a community built for car-free living, and what motivates people to live in this “green” city. Discussion post starter: After touring Freiburg and all the smaller communalities within the city, which community would you want to live in and why?
BUS students can… Visit London, England to meet CEOs, tour the financial district, learn the history of the markets and banking system, and see how the pandemic is affecting one of the largest economic hubs of the world. Role Play: Ask students to select one of the CEOs they found intriguing and to write extension interview questions they’d like to ask. Have them record a mock interview where they answer as that professional, with how they think they’d likely respond.
HIS, ENG, art, and HUM students can… Learn about several landmarks that have impacted culture, such as the Spanish steps, the Trevi Fountain, the David and the cathedral. Peer Review Prompt: Tour Rome and rank your top 3 favorite places visited. Reflect on why and explain where you’d like to travel next in a one-page short writing. Exchange and review in groups using a checklist of criteria.

The CTLE encourages you to share this resource with students–and to enjoy it yourself.

While the Global Learning Office normally offers a robust slate of study abroad programming, most students cannot afford the time or expense for that type of travel experience. Similarly, as busy professionals, many of us have never had the opportunity to travel abroad ourselves.

Central Piedmont will hold internal information sessions through Ability LMS in the coming weeks, so be sure to read The Communicator for announcements.

Toolin’ Around: Final Grading using Blackboard (ILP)

Hi everyone!

We hope all of you are wrapping up your courses and getting ready for the end of a…well an interesting year to say the least. We hope everyone has a safe and healthy rest of the semester (and holidays). Toolin’ Around Tips has one more tip to help you end out the year.

One way to streamline your workflow is to submit your final grades in your Blackboard course shell. You can do this via ILP Integration.

Toolin’ Around Tip: Blackboard has a feature (ILP Integration) that allows you to submit your mid-term and final grades for your course.

Benefits?
Having your grade submission in Blackboard saves you time from having to navigate to MyCollege where you may have to open multiple windows to submit your course final grades. One other benefit, with the press of a button, you can populate the final grades from your course shell’s grade center.

Toolin’ Around: Cisco WebEx Teams for Student Group Work

Hi everyone!

We hope all of you had a safe and healthy Thanksgiving holiday. We are so thankful to have these opportunities to work and learn alongside the best faculty, staff, and students this college could ask for. Thank you for tuning in to our content, we are happy to be here for you.

Lindy Hues, a CTLE Faculty Fellow and instructor in the Advertising and Graphic Design program was gracious enough to give us some wisdom on how she uses WebEx Teams to set up Student Group work, for this edition of “Toolin’ Around”!

Toolin’ Around Tip: WebEx Teams may be used as a great way to always be in touch, but it can also be used as a platform for students to work in groups. Here is a quick tutorial on how to set it up.

Benefits?
WebEx Teams is a remote synchronous tool that Central Piedmont has come to rely on in a big way. WebEx Teams helps us based on our departments, committees, user groups, and can also be used to help engage your students and courses. Once setup, you can have WebEx Teams function as a synchronous environment for your students to work collaboratively. Students can use this environment to initiate student led meetings (which you can drop in on if you wish) with video, screen sharing, and whiteboards. Students are also able to organize their own groups with persistent chat and file sharing. Please check out the tutorial to get started.

Toolin’ Around: Cisco WebEx Meeting’s Breakout Sessions

Hello! We hope you are having a great week!  Here is our helpful gem for this edition of “Toolin’ Around”!

Today’s tip is all about the Breakout feature in WebEx Meetings!

Toolin’ Around Tip: Recently added to Central Piedmont’s version of WebEx Meetings, you can use breakout sessions to place your participants into smaller groups where they can collaborate and share ideas.

Benefits?
Breakout sessions are smaller groups that are split off from the main Webex meeting. They allow a subset of meeting participants to collaborate and share ideas over audio and video. Use breakout sessions for workshops, classrooms, or for when you need a moment to talk privately with a few participants, outside of the main meeting.
