The Central Piedmont Library is currently experiencing off-campus access issues with a number of our research databases. For information about which databases are known to be impacted, as well as a workaround to access these resources, please visit our status of resources page at https://cpcc.libanswers.com/systems/. Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline for when this issue will be resolved.

Parking Alert – Central Campus

Just a reminder to everyone who drives to Central Campus – please be sure to park your vehicle in a Central Campus parking facility. Do not park along side streets near campus, at businesses adjacent to campus, nor in the parking areas at one of the nearby city/county parks and greenway.

All Central Campus parking decks are open. The decks and parking lots provide ample parking spaces for every student and employee who wishes to drive to campus.

Should you choose to park any place other than on campus, please know your vehicle could be ticketed, booted, or towed. If any of these occur, the college will not be able to assist you.

If you drive to Central Campus, please park on campus, and avoid an unnecessary expense. Thanks.

FERPA: Student’s Rights

Central Piedmont would like to inform our students of their rights under the Family Educational Rights and privacy Act of 1974, FERPA. Your annual notification is listed below. For more information about FERPA, visit cpcc.edu/ferpa.

Annual Notification of Rights Under FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students, when the student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the following rights with respect to their education records:

The right to inspect and review education records. To review records, students and former students may contact Student Records; present valid photo identification; and request in writing to review the record. Central Piedmont Community College will provide access to records within 30 days.

The right to request amendment of education records that students believe are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA. Students may question information in their educational records that they believe to be incorrect or inaccurate. This request must be in writing and must be submitted to the Dean for Admissions, Registration, Records, and Graduation. All requests for corrections will be acted upon within 30 work days of receipt of the request. If the Dean can verify that such data are, in fact, in error, appropriate corrections will be made, and the student will be notified in writing when the correction has been completed. If an error cannot be readily substantiated, the request will be referred to an Ad Hoc Hearing Committee appointed by the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services. After a student has had the opportunity to present the case to the hearing committee, the committee will render a decision in writing, stating the reasons for its decision.

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in education records. Central Piedmont Community College has declared the following information to be ‘directory’: student’s name; student’s city of residence; semesters attended; major field of study or program; credentials earned and dates awarded. ‘Directory’ information may be disclosed without the written consent of the student. All other disclosures, except when permitted by FERPA, require the written consent of the student. A Central Piedmont student ID card should be submitted along with the Student Information Release Authorization form to the Records Office.

One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official is performing a task that is specified in his or her position description or by a contract agreement, performing a task related to a student’s education, or performing a task related to the discipline of a student.

The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Central Piedmont Community College to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is:

Family Policy Compliance Office
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, D.C. 20202-5920
Phone: 1.800.USA.LEARN or 1.800.872.5327

Safe College – Active Shooter Preparedness

We hope you’re off to a great start with the new semester! We want you to know campus safety is the top priority of Central Piedmont’s College Security Services team and Emergency Management staff.

Thank you for taking part in the Aug. 21 classroom phone paging system test. We will periodically test our emergency communication channels as part of our preparations for potential emergency situations.

We take this opportunity to remind you of the information available on the college’s website about What To Do In An Emergency, for situations including an active shooter, severe weather, fire, and more. The college has a short, safety video we want you to watch now about what to do in those kinds of emergencies.

If there’s an active shooter on or near a Central Piedmont campus, would you know what to do? It’s incredibly important for employees and students to be prepared. Please also take a moment today to watch this powerful video to learn more about the “Run. Hide. Fight.” concept to help you know what to do if an active shooter is on campus or in a building where you are located.

If a campus goes on lockdown, you should immediately find a way to secure yourself, whether that means run, hide, or fight. Here’s more information:

RUN:

  • If you are outside or feel that it is safe to do so, exit the area and move away from danger to take protective cover.

HIDE:

  • If you are in a building and/or unsure of the location of the shooter, find the nearest classroom or safe area to securely hide.
  • Close and lock the door, close the blinds, find a spot in the room to hide away from the windows and doors, and remain quiet and calm.
  • If the door does not lock, use items from the room to attempt to barricade the door or hide behind.
  • DO NOT answer the door for anyone except first responders.

FIGHT:

  • This is a last resort. If you come into direct contact with the shooter, use the means at your disposal to fight and attempt to stop the individual.

The college relies on its students and employees to be the eyes and ears of the college, so if you see something, say something. Please program the Central Piedmont College Security Services phone number, 704.330.6911, into your mobile phone and call if there’s ever a concern of an immediate threat.

If you know of behavior that is concerning or disruptive to the college community, please learn more about counseling service referrals or how to submit a report to the Care Team, which is a cross-unit group whose members consist of college staff from Student Services, College Security Services, Counseling, Human Resources, and Academic Affairs.

Here are multiple ways to contact College Security if you have additional concerns:

  • Non-Emergency

Gorelick Gallery at Harper Campus to Feature ‘Frieze’ by Tom Stanley

Frieze, by Tom StanleyTom Stanley
Exhibited with works of art from the collection of Bill and the late Patty Gorelick
Now through July 31, 2020

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

frieze /frēz/

a broad horizontal band of sculpted or painted decoration, especially on a wall near the ceiling
