Summer Theatre 2020 Auditions- February 15,  9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.:

FERPA: Annual Notification of Student Rights

Central Piedmont would like to inform students of their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, FERPA. The annual notification is listed below. For more information about FERPA, visit cpcc.edu/ferpa.

Annual Notification of Rights Under FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students, when the student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the following rights with respect to their education records:

The right to inspect and review education records. To review records, students and former students may contact Student Records; present valid photo identification; and request in writing to review the record. Central Piedmont Community College will provide access to records within 30 days.

The right to request amendment of education records that students believe are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA. Students may question information in their educational records that they believe to be incorrect or inaccurate. This request must be in writing and must be submitted to the Dean for Admissions, Registration, Records, and Graduation. All requests for corrections will be acted upon within 30 work days of receipt of the request. If the Dean can verify that such data are, in fact, in error, appropriate corrections will be made, and the student will be notified in writing when the correction has been completed. If an error cannot be readily substantiated, the request will be referred to an Ad Hoc Hearing Committee appointed by the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services. After a student has had the opportunity to present the case to the hearing committee, the committee will render a decision in writing, stating the reasons for its decision.

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in education records.Central Piedmont Community College has declared the following information to be ‘directory’: student’s name; student’s city of residence; semesters attended; major field of study or program; credentials earned and dates awarded. ‘Directory’ information may be disclosed without the written consent of the student. All other disclosures, except when permitted by FERPA, require the written consent of the student. A Central Piedmont student ID card should be submitted along with the Student Information Release Authorization form to the Records Office.

One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official is performing a task that is specified in his or her position description or by a contract agreement, performing a task related to a student’s education, or performing a task related to the discipline of a student.

The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Central Piedmont Community College to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is:

Directory Information Public Notice

FERPA permits the disclosure of personally identifiable information (PII) from students’ education records, without consent of the student, if the disclosure meets certain conditions found in 99.31 of the FERPA regulations.

“Directory information” can be disclosed without your written consent:

  • your name
  • city of residence
  • semesters attended
  • credentials earned and dates awarded
  • your major field of study or program

A postsecondary institution may disclose PII from the education records without obtaining prior written consent of the student under the following circumstances:

  • To other school officials, including teachers, within Central Piedmont Community College whom the school has determined to have legitimate educational interests. This includes contractors, consultants, volunteers, or other parties to whom the school has outsourced institutional services or functions, provided that the conditions listed in 99.31(a)(1)(i)(B)(1) – (a)(1)(i)(B)(3) are met.
  • In connection with financial aid for which the student has applied or which the student has received, if the information is necessary to determine eligibility for the aid, determine the amount of the aid, determine the conditions of the aid, or enforce the terms and conditions of the aid.
  • To appropriate officials in connection with a health or safety emergency, subject to 99.36.
  • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena.
  • To accrediting organizations to carry out their accrediting functions.
  • To authorized representatives of the U. S. Comptroller General, the U.S. Attorney General, the U.S. Secretary of Education, or State and local educational authorities, such as a State postsecondary authority that is responsible for supervising the university’s State-supported education programs.
  • To organizations conducting studies for, or on behalf of, the school, in order to: (a) develop, validate, or administer predictive tests; (b) administer student aid programs; or (c) improve instruction.

Get Plugged In: Hundreds of Unique Experiences Available for Students

Central Piedmont offers you a ton of ways to get involved, make friends, do good for others, and have fun. While we offer hundreds of unique experiences on each campus during the semester (calendar of events), here are the Top 5 Ways to Plug-In This Week.

  1. Student Resource Day (City View Campus):  Join us on Thursday, February 6th (11am-1pm) where representatives from several student service departments will be present and available to speak with you! Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the services you need.
  2. Level Up Personal Enrichment (Levine Campus): Level Up is an exciting new enrichment series developed to provide students opportunities for personal growth beyond the classroom. Through various interactive activities and training sessions, students will gain a greater awareness of self and develop a deeper understanding of their impact on others. If you’re ready to challenge yourself beyond your comfort zone, meet new people and begin a guided journey towards self-awareness and personal development, this program is for you! Sessions held from 11am – 1pm on the first Friday of each month of the school year beginning in September and ending in April. There are 20 spots available and students will be required to register on a first-come, first-serve basis. Certificates of completion will be awarded to students who complete all 8 sessions. Remaining Spring Semester Meeting Dates: 2/7, 3/6, 4/3. Contact Nakeshia Staley to register.
  3. Black History Film Screening (Levine Campus): We invite students, faculty, and staff to join us on Monday, February 10 (3:30pm-5:30pm) and February 12 (3:30pm-5:30pm) to watch the movie “When They See Us”.  This will allow the opportunity to learn, discuss, and reflect on the criminalization of black and brown bodies, history of black suppression, and current social systems. A discussion and reflection will follow each episode. Students who attend at least two of the screenings will be credited 3 hours for community engagement through the Office of Service-Learning.
  4. Gender Identity Pronouns (Cato Campus): How would you like to be identified? Join us in Cato III Atrium on Monday, February 10 (10am-1pm) to create your own pronoun button and get to know your peers in the process.
  5. Seat @ the Table (Central Campus): Visit us on Wednesday, February 12 (12:30-1:30pm) for our Seat at the Table program.  It is a program created for students, faculty, and staff to have conversations that relate to their every-day lives outside of work and the classroom. Friendships, mental illness, love, forgiveness, and sex are among the many topics that will be held at the “dinner table” on Wednesdays at 12:30pm in Overcash 242. Barbara Rizza Mellin captures the simple elegance of natural objects in Chinese Brush Painting, the real and apparent spontaneity of the process in which a few strokes capture the beauty of a blossom, the fragility of a fallen leaf. Her works combine elements of water color paintings and calligraphic line drawings, and, yet, have their own unique look and style. Through Illuminate, Central Piedmont’s Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery partners with the ArtPop Street Gallery’s Class of 2018 in the shared vision of bringing art to students, faculty, and the community. This collective showcase of eclectic pieces created in paint, collage, photography, stoneware, and glass reflects the diversity and depth of Charlotte’s local art. Some of the works are recognizable as those that were lit up over the city, while others are new endeavors. All reflect the aspiration and passion of the artist.

Frieze by artist Tom Stanley through December 18, 2020

   

Tom Stanley’s series are often hung as a frieze even as he works on groups of paintings. Size, imagery, color, and format for each series is distinct and help to create a visual theme within the group of related works.

The architectural realities of the Bill and Patty Gorelick Gallery at the Central Piedmont Harper Campus lend themselves well to a frieze-like installation. As a result, three of Stanley’s series are on exhibit now through July 2020. Each series will include six to eight works of acrylic on canvas.

Drawing with paint, Stanley uses common graphic strategies, such as mechanical drawing, silhouette, and sgraffito to make something he has never seen before. His works are a conversation between hands and eyes.

Study Abroad at Central Piedmont – Now Accepting Applications

Study Abroad: Central Piedmont offers short term and faculty-led study abroad programs during spring break and the summer term. Travel with faculty for 1 to 4 weeks and earn class credit. (Humanities 120 is an option for most programs along with the discipline attached to the program).

By studying abroad, participants gain cultural sensitivity, foreign language skills, and a global perspective. This translates to competitiveness in the job market, as employers are increasingly looking for workers who have international skills and experience. NC Scholars of Global Distinction: The N.C. Students Transform Their Lives Through Year Up

Year Up, in partnership with Central Piedmont, equips young adults with the skills training to be career-ready and the opportunity to demonstrate their talent. After six months of training with both Year Up and Central Piedmont, Year Up students earn the opportunity to intern at a leading corporate company in Cyber Security, Project Management or Software Development roles. The internship phase of the program provides access to opportunity and experience needed to begin a meaningful professional career.

Current Central Piedmont and Year Up student, Arrick Rithiphong attests that “without Year Up, [he] would not have been exposed to the skills needed to thrive in [his] career choice”, now a successful Bank of America intern studying Cyber.

Year Up is a program that promises deserving, young adults like Arrick the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in the corporate environment. Take the first step in a life-changing opportunity!

Voters Are Not Required to Show Photo ID in Primary Election

Voting is one of the most important rights of U.S. citizens. Now is the time to let your voice be heard!

In a December 31 order, a federal district court blocked North Carolina’s voter photo ID requirement from taking effect. As a result, voters will not be required to show photo ID for the March 3, 2020, primary election. The injunction will remain in place until further order of the court.  For more information visit the State Board of Elections website: www.ncsbe.gov.

Keep in mind, voters typically need to register to vote at least a month before election day. Be sure to:

  1. Familiarize yourself with upcoming election dates and NC voter eligibility requirements.
  2. Register to vote if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Voter registration drives are being held on campus Feb. 3 through Feb. 6. Visit a campus near you to get registered!

Central Piedmont Alumna Patsy Montesinos named one of five 2019–2020 ProPublica Emerging Reporters

Congratulations to Central Piedmont alumna Patsy Montesinos who was recently selected as one of five young journalists from over 150 candidates to participate in the ProPublica Emerging Reporters program. The ProPublica Emerging Reporters program intends to make college journalism accessible to students for whom it would otherwise be economically out of reach.

ProPublica, an independent nonprofit newsroom’s program in its fifth year, recently afforded Patsy the opportunity to network and learn from reporters in newsrooms at The New York Times, Buzzfeed, WNYC and ProPublica over the course of three days.

Originally encouraged to consider UNC-Chapel Hill by Carolina alumna Amanda Capobianchi, Ph.D., associate dean for Student Life, Montesinos began attending UNC as a Covenant Scholar in the fall of 2018.

Currently, a UNC Hussman broadcast and video student, Patsy is thriving will also have the opportunity to attend the 2020 NICAR Conference devoted to data journalism this March in New Orleans.

National Student Literary Competition – “Once Upon a Time..”

The League for Innovation in the Community College is an international nonprofit organization with a mission to cultivate innovation in the community college environment. The annual League for Innovation Student Literary Competition is now open for submissions on the local level.

The submission deadline is Monday, March 23, 2020.

General Eligibility:

  • Contestants must be 2019-20 students enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College.
  • Entries must be original works written during enrollment.

Categories:

  • Poetry (not exceeding 67 lines)
  • Personal Essay (not over 2,500 words), related to this year’s theme: “Once Upon a Time…”
  • Short Fiction (not exceeding 3,500 words)
  • One-act play (not over 3,500 words)

Local winners in each category will be published in Central Piedmont’s Student Arts and Literature magazine “The Hammer”, and move on to compete in the will the national competition, where there will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Certificates of merit are awarded to all student work submitted to the national level. The 1st place winner will be published in NATIONAL winners’ anthology.

From helping alleviate the rising costs of college education to allowing students the ability to focus on studies and not expenses, scholarships play a huge role in a student’s ability to pursue and complete a degree program.

Central Piedmont Community College has over 250 scholarship opportunities available each year. Students can access a number of these opportunities by completing the General Scholarship Application on Academic Works for fall, spring and summer semesters.

The application cycle for the academic year 2020-2021 opens February 1, 2020 and closes November 30, 2020.

Here are some important deadlines to keep in mind:

  • Summer 2020 application deadline – April 30, 2020
  • Fall 2020 & spring 2021 priority application deadline – May 15, 2020
  • Fall 2020 & spring 2021 regular application deadline – July 30, 2020
  • Spring 2020 only application deadline – November 30, 2020

*Students who complete the application will automatically be considered for all auto-match scholarship opportunities. Certain opportunities may require supplemental information (i.e. transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation, etc.).
