UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont introduced 49erNext, a new co-admission transfer program for students in North Carolina during a special event on Oct. 3 in the UNC Charlotte Center City Building. The program provides a seamless pathway for students who wish to start a degree program at Central Piedmont and complete their education at UNC Charlotte.
During the event, Peggy and Bob Culbertson of Charlotte announced they were committing $1 million to Central Piedmont to provide scholarships for financially needy students. The college will use a significant portion of the gift to establish the Peggy and Bob Culbertson 49erNext Scholarship Program to assist students in the newly created program. The Culbertson gift also will fund scholarships for Central Piedmont students pursuing career-focused technical degrees and preparing to enter the workforce.

Dear Central Piedmont Community College Student,
My name is Deninne Pritchett and I am an instructor at Central Piedmont. I am working as a student researcher under the direction of Dr. Nancy Bridier in the College of Doctoral Studies at Grand Canyon University. I am conducting a research study to explore first-generation college students (FGCS) experiences with social involvement and what role this plays upon their persistence in higher education. For this study, understanding FGCS persistence in higher education will allow stakeholders to know why FGCS describe social involvement as influencing their persistence, provide a platform for FGCS experiences with social involvement, and prompt the discussion for what community colleges can do to maintain or increase social involvement opportunities at the college to support FGCS.
You may be eligible to participate in this study. The investigator of this study can determine your eligibility. Participation in this study is voluntary and no compensation is provided. The participant must be 18 yrs. or older, identify as FGCS, enrolled in a degree-seeking program with no more than one semester off to complete the 22-question questionnaire to determine FGCS social involvement experiences at community college. The results of the questionnaire will be downloaded, and participants will be assigned a numerical identifier, which means your identity will remain confidential. I would like to notify you in advance, there are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to participants.
All participant responses will be strictly confidential. No personal identifiable information will be attached to the interview data since each record will be coded and labeled with an identification number rather than personal or organization names. While the results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, or publications, no names will not be used in these media and will only be used in the collective form. The recorded media files and any field notes of the participant’s interview will be data encrypted and reside on secured password protected digital media and locked in a fireproof safe that only I, as the researcher, will have access to for 3 years and then destroyed.

Interested in a paid internship? Year Up is a one-year program at Central Piedmont – Central Campus that is open to students between the ages of 18-24 years old. You will earn an educational stipend (up to $200/month) while taking your Central Piedmont courses in Software Development, Information Technology, or Business for a semester. The following semester you will be matched to a six-month paid (up to $600/month) corporate internship and earn credits towards your degree.
This program begins in March 2020 and spaces are limited!

For the 2019-20 academic year, Autobell Car Wash presented 136 of its team members in the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia and Maryland with scholarships toward the college or university of their choice, with the year’s gifts totaling $169,250. Since its inception, the Autobell Car Wash Scholarship Program has awarded qualifying applicants more than $1.6 million in scholarship funding. The following Central Piedmont students were named 2019 scholarship recipients:
The scholarship program is open to current Autobell team members who have been employed with the company for a continuous 12 months. The selection process considers each student’s academic diligence and accomplishments, productive extracurricular activities, civic engagement, and letters from references familiar with the applicant through school and community involvement. The application also requires an essay that discusses an educational or creative aspect of their employment experience.
The national nonprofit Year Up celebrated the launch of its new Charlotte location with a 
breakfast and ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning at Central Piedmont Community College.
Speaking at the event were Torrey Smith, Players Coalition Board Member and Two-time Super Bowl Champion; Year Up President Cyril Turner; Year Up Charlotte Site Director Elise Ford; National Year Up Site Director Roland Selby; Central Piedmont Community College President Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer; and Bank of America Community Engagement Executive Kathryn Black.
The free yearlong program prepares students (ages 18-24) for entry-level technology and customer-facing roles. Participants spend one semester taking technical and professional skills classes taught by Central Piedmont and Year Up staff, and the following semester in a full-time, credit-bearing internship at a corporate partner firm.
The program is provided to students at no cost. Throughout the year, students earn college credits and a weekly stipend, and have access to Central Piedmont’s many services, including the college’s library and tutoring resources, as well as additional Year Up services.
“We are excited because this partnership fits so well with the mission, vision, and historic purpose of Central Piedmont,” said Kandi Deitemeyer, president of Central Piedmont. “Central Piedmont has always been a driver of economic mobility. The college has always worked to build and offer pathways to careers and further education. We are proud to join with Year Up Charlotte and Bank of America as we seek to transform lives and bring new possibilities to individuals and their families.”
The first 53 students began classes in August 2019; the program will grow to serve 120 young adults over the next year.
Nationwide, 90% of Year Up graduates are employed or attending college within four months of completing Year Up, with average starting salaries of $40,000/year.
The program received a grant from the Players Coalition in Jan. 2019 to support the program’s expansion into new cities like Charlotte and help Year Up change perceptions of Opportunity Youth from social liabilities to economic assets.

“This past Friday night, my car broke down at a Wendy’s in Charlotte. And, not in a nice comfy parking spot, but right in the middle of the parking lot – wedged up beside of a curb – making it difficult to move. I sat there for an hour waiting for AAA. I had to constantly wave irritated people around my car and apologize. AAA showed up with jumper cables that did not work. So, I waited another hour and a half for the AAA tow truck which did not appear. As I was sitting there frustrated, upset and sad, I started questioning humanity as many passed and only two people had asked if they could help. A simple jump did not work. And then a wonderful thing happened.
That wonderful thing was a young gentleman named Dalton Hines who said he was a student at Central Piedmont studying in your automotive technology program. When I explained the battery acid had made my terminal connection toast, he volunteered to change it right there. He drove me to the closeby Auto Zone. I purchased the supplies and we went back to my sad, stranded vehicle. Mr. Dalton used his knowledge to bring my car back to life. He was determined to help and to have my car back in running condition.
Mr. Dalton Hines was not required to stop and help. He could have just driven by like many had already done before. Not only did he stop, but without hesitation, he saved my evening and reaffirmed that good still exists in the world.
He is a benefit to your school and to our community. He is using his education to help not only himself but others. If there is any way that scholarship monies could rain down on this young man, I am sure he will do wonderous things with his education.”

In recent months, the Central Campus has experienced a number of situations in the early morning hours involving people who have come onto college property without a legitimate purpose. College Security Services is concerned these situations could pose a danger to college employees, students or visitors – as well as to college property.
As a result, changes have been made to the Central Campus exterior door unlocking schedule. As you recall, the college’s hours of operation are 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday. On weekdays, building exterior doors will now remain locked until 7 a.m.
Students who need to arrive early on Central Campus will be directed to the Overcash Commons Elizabeth Ave. entrance, which will unlock at 6 a.m. This will allow College Security Services to provide students shelter from the weather and access to facilities while waiting for the college buildings to unlock at 7 a.m.
If a building is scheduled for a 7 a.m. class, the exterior doors will unlock at 6:30 a.m. for student access. Employees would continue to use their access card to get into the building beginning at 6 a.m.

We all deserve to experience healthy and happy relationships. You are invited to join us for special multi-campus presentations listed below to learn about the covert aspects of power and control in unhealthy relationships. You’ll hear firsthand experiences by ‘survivors’ of domestic abuse, from CMPD, the local district attorney’s office, mental health clinicians, and the college’s Title IX program advocates who’ve partnered together to speak out against intimate partner violence. In addition, a special panel exhibit Survivor Stories will be on display the week of presentations at each campus.
Attendees will receive invaluable information on violence prevention resources and services available in the community and at the college. Light refreshments will be provided.
