Gov. Roy Cooper Visits College, Asks For More Emergency Grants For Students

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, met on Central Piedmont’s Central Campus Wednesday with faculty, staff, and students to share exciting updates about the Finish Line Grant, an emergency grant program originally announced by Cooper in July 2018.

College is a serious financial undertaking. The Finish Line Grant is designed to assist community college students in addressing financial situations that would prevent them from continuing or completing their program of study or credential. Students facing financial hardship may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to cover eligible expenses per semester.

During the event, Gov. Cooper announced that in North Carolina, 3,000 community college Finish Line Grants have been awarded to date. He added, “It’s amazing how a small amount of money can make a big difference in the life of a student who is trying really hard and is having to pay tuition and fees to try and better themselves in order to get over the hump.”

Too often, financial hardships such as unexpected healthcare costs, childcare expenses, or car and transportation issues prevent students from achieving their academic goals. Fortunately, there are many types of financial aid available to help pay for college.

Lexine Merrill, a Central Piedmont student and Finish Line Grant recipient, echoed the governor’s sentiments. “In one week, I ended up with $1,300 in medical bills and car repairs. I had no idea what to do and nowhere to turn. But then a friend mentioned her experience with the Finish Line Grant, so I applied. I sobbed grateful tears when I learned I was approved. The Finish Line Grant relieved the financial burdens that were weighing heavily on me. It allowed me the opportunity to continue moving forward, toward my finish line.

Students facing an unexpected financial emergency can get connected to a variety of FREE resources through Single Stop, to help them stay focused on their academic goals.

Another twelve-week session begins Monday, Feb. 12, and the second eight-week short session begins Monday, March 16. Check My College for course availability.

Spring semester test of the classroom phone paging system

Please be aware that we will test this phone paging system and the college website on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 10:30 a.m.

This is also a great time to take a moment to confirm or update your mobile phone number and other contact information in our Critical Alert emergency text/phone/email system. It’s important to keep your contact info updated, because this is how the college will contact you if classes are cancelled or impacted due to inclement weather or if there’s an emergency situation.

  • Use your Central Piedmont login and password at cpcc.regroup.com.
  • To add text/call information, scroll down to the “PHONE NUMBERS” section and look for the “+ Add New Phone Number” option below any existing phone numbers.
  • To delete an incorrect phone number, select the trash can icon to the right of it.

Please note that you cannot opt out of Critical Alert notification emails to your Central Piedmont account because your college email is the official channel of communication.

Koichi Takara receives 2019 Community Impact Student Award

Koichi TakaraCongratulations to Central Piedmont Community College student Koichi Takara who was recently recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to civic engagement.

Takara received the organization’s 2019 Community Impact Student Award, which honors one student leader at each school, who has demonstrated a deep commitment to community involvement and an ability to inspire others.

Takara has made significant leadership and service contributions both inside and outside the Central Piedmont community since becoming a student in 2018. He is a Foundation Scholar for Peer Mentoring, was elected President of the Student Government Association, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Rotaract, and the NC Scholars of Global Distinction program.

As SGA Student Body President, he not only leads the constitutional revision committee to address the needs of the student body, but also strives to engage all six of the college’s campuses by boosting student engagement in the many opportunities and campus organizations the college offers. His efforts have resulted in more students being involved civically and adopting leadership roles.

Says Jesse Bennett, the director of service-learning at Central Piedmont who nominated Takara for the award, “Koichi’s approach is always enthusiastic and compassionate. He possesses a willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise on a wide array of subject matter.”

Takara, a Huntersville resident, plans to major in political science and international relations and eventually attend law school after completing his associate in arts degree at Central Piedmont.

#ConquerPossibility: Central Piedmont Alumnus Anthony Brown

Central Piedmont Alumnus and veteran Anthony Brown graduated from Central Piedmont with an Associate in Applied Science degree in hospitality management in 2015. Since that time, he has earned a bachelor’s degree from Johnson & Wales Univerisity and currently works as the assistant general manager for Drury Inn and Suites in Charlotte.

Learn how Anthony took the curriculum credits he earned at Central Piedmont, transferred them to Johnson Wales to start as a junior at the school, and conquered possibility.

Central Piedmont Alumnus Opens Strudel Shop with Lifelong Friend

Three people stand outside strudel shop

In the Strudel Shop’s kitchen, Central Piedmont alumnus Kevin Kelly stretches a sheet of dough over a stainless steel counter and shakes it in a motion that resembles the rolling of ocean waves. Soon the dough will make up the crust for an apple strudel, which he’ll sell from a sliding window on 15th Street in Optimist Park. But for now, Kevin needs a few extra hands to finish the job.

“Dee, grab that corner,” he tells Dee Huang, co-owner of the Strudel Shop and Kevin’s childhood best friend. Dee chuckles and responds, “Yes chef!” Kevin directs his grandmother Ginger to another corner and me to the last corner. Together they pinch and tug on the flour-covered dough and drape it over the edges of the table until it’s so thin, it looks like tablecloth.

College Launches JA Finance Park® and JA BizTown® Storefront

ribbon cutting

Representatives from Central Piedmont Community College and Junior Achievement of the Central Carolinas gathered at the organization’s JA Finance Park® at the JA TowneBank Opportunity headquarters in Camp North End to participate in a special ribbon-cutting event to welcome Central Piedmont to the space.

JA Finance Park® and JA BizTown® are two programs spearheaded by Junior Achievement USA to prepare young people for the real world by teaching them how to follow a monthly budget, understand the actual “costs of living,” and think critically and solve problems.

The Central Piedmont space will not only help educate students on the different educational paths available to them, but also to help high school students apply to the college for free and assist them with filling out their financial aid applications. This is an exciting partnership with Central Piedmont and the Junior League. Central Piedmont is the first community college in the country to participate in these national programs, which strive to instill sound financial literacy and money management skills in today’s youth so they may succeed in the future.
