Your Vote Counts: Ways to Get Involved at Central Piedmont

In 2020, you have the opportunity to vote for the next president of the U.S., who will represent you for North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, the next NC governor, lieutenant governor, and other important NC leadership positions. Here’s how you can get involved this week with fellow students and registered voters!

  1. Show us your voting pride! Tag @cpccstudentlife and #NCStudentVote while you are at the polls, with your “I Voted” sticker, or mailing off your ballot to get a free mask.
  2. Hosted by Service-Learning, join us Wednesday, October 14 from 12:00 to 1:00pm for  ​ImpACT Series: The Right to Vote via Zoom. Understand the history of your right to vote and learn from the experiences of others.
  3. Prepare to watch the second presidential debate during our Presidential Debate Watch Party, October 15, 8:30pm-9:15pm via Zoom (Meeting ID: 942 6005 3696, Passcode: Debate) We will discuss likely talking points and things to look for in the debate.   4. Need a witness to sign your absentee ballot for you? We are here! Come by the table outside Worrell on Central Campus, October 23rd, between 11:00am -1:00pm. We can be your witness, direct you to the closest USPS drop box, and get you some FREE SWAG.

Central Piedmont Library Opens Individual Study Spaces for Students

The library has re-opened study rooms for individual student use! We recognize that students have missed having a quiet place to study and complete assignments, and we are pleased to offer these spaces for use again. To keep both students and staff safe from COVID, we ask that everyone follow these important guidelines:

• Only one student per room (no exceptions).
• Masks are strongly recommended, but may be removed while alone in the room only.
• The door to the study room should remain closed.
• No food or drink

Study spaces can be reserved at Central, Levine, Cato, Harper, and Harris Campus Libraries (and coming to Merancas in January). See our Reserve a Computer or Space page to book a study space.

Could You Use $500 for Books or Tuition?

The Theresa Thompson Library Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for currently enrolled students pursuing a two-year degree at Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarship is restricted to books and/or tuition assistance.

This scholarship award is made possible through library fundraising projects.

  • Two $500 scholarships will be awarded in the fall and spring semester.
  • Completed applications and supporting documents must be received by November 13, 2020.
  • Incomplete and late packets will NOT be considered.

Coronavirus Information on cpcc.edu

Since mid-March, there has been a“Coronavirus Alerts” bar across each page of the Central Piedmont website. This alert bar will go away as of Wednesday, Oct. 7, and will appear only when there is urgent information to communicate. 

You can still find the Coronavirus Updates link in the main navigation on every page of cpcc.edu.

The coronavirus updates area provides comprehensive coronavirus information and specific information for students, including information about student emergency fund grants and the Central Piedmont Cares form you can submit if you need assistance from a Central Piedmont staff member during these challenging times. 

The Returning to Campus page provides access to the Health Acknowledgement form you should complete by Monday each week you plan to be on campus, the Return to Campus Guide for students, and helpful videos. The site also features a COVID-19 chatbot that can help you with questions specifically related to coronavirus. As a reminder, you can get your student ID card online or on campus. Visit the Student IDs page for complete details.

Drop “CP” and “CPCC” to use “Central Piedmont” or “Central Piedmont Community College”

Following the college’s rebrand in April 2019, the college adopted a new naming convention: “Central Piedmont Community College” on first reference, and “Central Piedmont” on second reference.

The college discourages the use of “CPCC” or “CP” in all of its written communication. In addition, when you’re speaking about the college with others, both at the college and in public, please keep the above guidelines in mind. We are proudly “Central Piedmont Community College” or “Central Piedmont.”

Thank you so much for being a brand ambassador for us as we strive to tell our story clearly and concisely to everyone in Mecklenburg County and beyond.

Advisory: Governor Moves State to Phase 3

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced earlier today (Sept. 30) the state will move into Phase 3 of easing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Phase 3 will go into effect Friday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m.

Under phase 3:

  • Movie theaters and conference centers can operate at 30% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.
  • Bars may operate at 30% outdoor capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.
  • Small outdoor venues that hold fewer than 10,000 people can operate at 30% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.
  • Large outdoor venues that hold 10,000 or more can operate at 7% capacity.
  • Outdoor amusement parks can operate at 30% capacity.

Among the continued requirements:

  • Face coverings remain mandatory for people over age 5.
  • Mass gatherings remain limited to 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors.
  • The existing alcohol curfew is extended.

The college continues to offer its fall classes in multiple formats – online, hybrid, blended, and face-to-face. (Hybrid and blended courses include both online and some face-to-face instruction.)  Short session fall classes begin Oct. 14, and Nov. 11.

For students who attend classes on campus, please read the Student Guide to Returning to Campus carefully. It’s important you follow all of the safety practices detailed in the guide. These include wearing a face covering, keeping a social distance from others, washing your hands frequently, self-monitoring for possible COVID-19 symptoms, and staying home if you feel ill at all.

Employees are encouraged to read the Guide for Returning to Campus to learn how to best keep their teammates and students as healthy and safe as possible going forward.

Emerging Student Leaders is a six-week, transformational student leadership development training program. Through self-awareness, team building, values, and communication development activities, Emerging Student Leaders will prepare you to identify and build your leadership skills, define your purpose, and create a network of support within your cohort and across Central Piedmont. Central Piedmont and Queens University Partner to Launch RoyalUp Program

Central Piedmont and Queen University announced the launch of its RoyalUp program – a new pathway to a bachelor’s degree that aims to expand college access to more students – on Friday.

Students who enroll in RoyalUp will take their first two years of classes at Central Piedmont and finish their bachelor’s degree at Queens. Students who maintain a 2.5 GPA or above are guaranteed admission as well as a $10,000 annual scholarship at Queens. This plan offers a new, cost-effective and direct pathway for Central Piedmont students who want to pursue a four-year degree.

Central Piedmont President Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer adds, “This public-private partnership is unique and will be a great benefit to students in Mecklenburg County. We are excited to offer this option and pathway to our students who will thrive at Queens, where they will enjoy small class sizes, relationships with professors and a strong surrounding community. At the same time, this partnership is a great example of the higher-education community in Charlotte working together to build more avenues to greater economic mobility.”

Student Fellows’ Opportunity for Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium

​​Central Piedmont has joined with UNC-Charlotte, Queens University, Johnson C. Smith University, and Johnson and Wales University to create the Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium (CRJC).

“The vision of the CRJC is to work towards a Charlotte community that understands its history of race and racism, believes in our shared humanity, embraces a more comprehensive narrative on race, and develops faculty, staff, and student leaders who work across our campuses towards truth, racial healing, and transformation. A key component of our TRHT Campus Center is the Racial Justice Fellows program, which empowers students on each campus to work towards this vision by building a skillset that can help to dismantle racism and achieve racial equity. Each campus will hire six Fellows to work on this project for the academic year 2020-2021.”

The Student Fellows’ two main priorities will be to research the racial history of Charlotte, with a special focus on Central Piedmont Community College (or whichever institution the Fellow attends), and leading the Racial Healing Circle programs. Students will receive training on research, presenting, and facilitating deliberative dialogues; among learning other skills and receiving support.
For their work students will be compensated with stipends which will total $2,000 for the entire year (fall 2020 – spring 2021). Applications are open now, and will close October 2nd with interviews taking place the week of October 5th.

To keep you moving forward with your educational goals at Central Piedmont, our Financial Aid office is available remotely to assist you with the completion of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is the primary form used by federal, state, and financial assistance programs to determine your eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships. Did you know you must  fill out a new FAFSA every year?

Complete your FAFSA as soon as possible, as funding can be limited – so you definitely don’t want to wait.  If you do not fill out the FAFSA, you risk losing out on money that you might be eligible for.

The FAFSA for 2021–2022 opens Thursday, October 1.

Through numerous discussions and detailed planning across all units of the college, we remain committed to providing a safe environment for our students to learn and faculty and staff members to work. Which class format(s) do you prefer?

Fall semester classes are being taught in multiple formats – online, hybrid, blended and face-to-face. Here are the different types:

  • Traditional (regular in-person class meetings with very little, if any, online instruction)
  • Online (completely online with no on-campus meetings)
  • Blended (both online and seated instruction with weekly on-campus meetings)
  • Hybrid (more online than seated, fewer than 8 on-campus meetings)

During the event, Dr. Deitemeyer and President Lugo will announce the new initiative, followed by remarks from Lauren-Dionne Scott, a Queens student and Central Piedmont graduate.

  • find out what degree is needed for the job you want and how much it pays
