Play and Win With Spring E-Sports League

flier including esports recreation informationReady to put your skills to the test? Join us for the new esports recreation program at Central Piedmont. Student Life has started an esports program for students to connect with one another and create a community virtually through esports.
The program is open to all currently enrolled Central Piedmont students, participating is FREE!
Register for a league by downloading the Mission Control mobile application and joining a league at Central Piedmont Community College. Sign ups are active through February 1. Games are played during the week, after 8pm. Students are able to reschedule games against other students if needed. Winners of each league will win a gift card!

Have Your Say – Make a Difference

SGA classroomIf you want to make a difference in our Central Piedmont community, this is your chance!! Apply for a Student Government Association (SGA) Senator position. If interested, please complete an application form by Monday, Jan 25th at 12pm.

Senators are responsible for:

  • Reading and complying with all procedures and standards of SGA
  • Attending all weekly General Assembly meetings (Mondays at 4 p.m.),
  • Attending other college committee meetings and other related engagements as assigned or required.
  • Hosting campus Town Hall forums.
  • Maintaining and recording office hours at their campus (currently virtual).
  • Participating in required training and development sessions.

Congratulations Phi Theta Kappa!

The PTK fall 2020 induction class set a record for the largest-ever at Central Piedmont, with 340 students joining our chapter as new members! Our Phi Lambda chapter also celebrated its 50th birthday in 2020.

Level Up this Spring with Student Life

Student in mask looking at instructor while on laoptopLooking for ways to maintain your good momentum this spring? Prioritize your development and take this opportunity to improve your future leadership skills. Join Student Life for a new virtual leadership series called Level Up.

This free program will connect you with other Central Piedmont students, offer you the opportunity to develop and practice important skills in inclusion, personal development, professionalism, and communication – all things that will enhance your  impact as a member of the student leader community at Central Piedmont and beyond! 

The sessions will be informative, interactive, and fun! Space is limited, so be sure to complete the online registration form form by January 21, 2021. This virtual series will meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month (3 pm – 4:40 p.m.) until April 2021. 

Don’t wait – the first program date is Wednesday, January 27 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m., and remaining program dates are February 24, March 24 and April 28. 

It’s so important to your personal development to stay connected. Engage with other student leaders every month – all you need is a mobile device or computer access. For your participation, you will receive a certificate acknowledging successful completion of all four sessions, which is a benefit to your resume or portfolio.

 The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is excited for a new year of learning and fun. CAB offers a variety of free programs and activities by students – for students. We value the importance of peer to peer connection outside of the classroom; so, we have worked diligently to transition our offerings online. Be sure to follow us on Instagram for event updates, giveaways, and more! 

 If you are interested in becoming a member of CAB,  apply today! Applications are open to all Central Piedmont students, regardless of campus. Membership is limited, so don’t wait. Lead With a Purpose: Emerging Student Leaders Program Accepting Applications

Emerging student leaders gold and teal logoNow is the time for leaders who lead with integrity and create positive change. If you want to increase your leadership knowledge and enhance your skills, the Emerging Student Leaders Program was designed just for you.

 Emerging Student Leaders is a six-week, transformational student leadership development training program. Through self-awareness, team building, values, and communication development activities, the program will prepare you to identify and build your leadership skills, define your purpose, and create a network of support amongst fellow students and across Central Piedmont. For completing the program, you receive a certificate and a badge to include on your social media.

Two cohort groups of Emerging Leaders will be offered in Spring 2021:

  • January 26 through March 2
    • Tuesdays from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m.
  • * January 28 through March 4
    • Thursdays from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

All great leaders must first possess the ability to lead themselves in order to lead others. ​Apply Today!

  • Are you renting? Not sure what your rights are? Consider attending this seminar to learn about tenant protections available due to the pandemic and how to spot illegal trade practices, habitability issues, and eviction issues.   • Life at Chapel Hill Q&A Session: The Student Researchers in Science Club are hosting a virtual panel with two students currently at UNC Chapel Hill in science majors, who will be sharing their experiences about school during the pandemic, life outside of school, opportunities, etc. Have questions you want to ask the panelists?   • Bingo! Students can  join in with Rotaract’s efforts during Bingo on November 13th at 3:00pm via Zoom (MeetingID: 985 806 2030, Passcode: BINGO). Students can pre-register to get their bingo card, provide optional donation of $5, and play along. Please complete the registration form and join us for a great cause.
    • Rotaract Club has selected Partners for Parks Foundation as their 2020-2021 philanthropy. This organization supports our local greenways and leads sustainability efforts in our community. Rotaract is asking students, faculty, and staff to participate in the 5-5-5 Challenge. Donate five to their gofundme, walk/run a 5k on the greenway, park, or neighborhood or tag 5 people on social media and challenge them to do the same.

What Are You Walking For? Walk for Wellness

Get your walking shoes ready! Join Student Life November 16 – 22 for the first ever Walk for Wellness to participate in challenges that can benefit your health and wellness.   • Download the free 10,000 Steps app from the Google Play or AppleApp store and sign up for a participant account using your Central Piedmont student email address

  • Using the link in the app, visit the 10,000 Steps website to sync your mobile account and accept your invitation

Participate

  • Download and create a participant account for the 10,000 Steps App using your Central Piedmont student email
  • Sign up for the event by sending Anita McGill an email after creating a 10,000 Steps participant account
  • Track your steps using the device or app you feel comfortable with
  • Record your daily steps in the 10,000 Steps app before midnight on the day of the challenge, be sure to click the sync button in the Step Log so your steps are registered
  • Winners will be announced throughout the event

*Prize Rules

Steps must be registered before midnight on the day of the challenge for students to qualify for that day’s prize. Winners will be chosen at random from the day’s qualifying participants. Prizes are limited to one per student, per day during the 7-day challenge. A different prize will be distributed every day, and include:

  • Mysterious mystery bundles
  • Carrying bag for keeping items handy while walking
  • Cookbook to encourage a healthy, and delicious, lifestyle
  • Protein shaker to shake your way to the perfect protein shake, with bonus moisture wicking buff to catch the sweat from all your hard work

Your Vote Counts: Ways to Get Involved at Central Piedmont

In 2020, you have the opportunity to vote for the next president of the U.S., who will represent you for North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, the next NC governor, lieutenant governor, and other important NC leadership positions. Here’s how you can get involved this week with fellow students and registered voters!

  1. Show us your voting pride! Tag @cpccstudentlife and #NCStudentVote while you are at the polls, with your “I Voted” sticker, or mailing off your ballot to get a free mask.
  2. Hosted by Service-Learning, join us Wednesday, October 14 from 12:00 to 1:00pm for  ​ImpACT Series: The Right to Vote via Zoom. Understand the history of your right to vote and learn from the experiences of others.
  3. Prepare to watch the second presidential debate during our Presidential Debate Watch Party, October 15, 8:30pm-9:15pm via Zoom (Meeting ID: 942 6005 3696, Passcode: Debate) We will discuss likely talking points and things to look for in the debate. Student Fellows’ Opportunity for Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium

​​Central Piedmont has joined with UNC-Charlotte, Queens University, Johnson C. Smith University, and Johnson and Wales University to create the Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium (CRJC).

“The vision of the CRJC is to work towards a Charlotte community that understands its history of race and racism, believes in our shared humanity, embraces a more comprehensive narrative on race, and develops faculty, staff, and student leaders who work across our campuses towards truth, racial healing, and transformation. A key component of our TRHT Campus Center is the Racial Justice Fellows program, which empowers students on each campus to work towards this vision by building a skillset that can help to dismantle racism and achieve racial equity. Each campus will hire six Fellows to work on this project for the academic year 2020-2021.”

The Student Fellows’ two main priorities will be to research the racial history of Charlotte, with a special focus on Central Piedmont Community College (or whichever institution the Fellow attends), and leading the Racial Healing Circle programs. Students will receive training on research, presenting, and facilitating deliberative dialogues; among learning other skills and receiving support.
For their work students will be compensated with stipends which will total $2,000 for the entire year (fall 2020 – spring 2021). Applications are open now, and will close October 2nd with interviews taking place the week of October 5th.

SGA Elections: Cast Your Vote Next Week!

Elections for new officers of the Central Piedmont’s Student Government Association Executive Committee are taking place next week! SGA leaders serve for a full-year term, representing the needs and interests of all students at Central Piedmont. They provide feedback to college administrators and committees, support student organizations with funding and resources, and support the campus SGA Councils in their work on all of Central Piedmont’s campuses, and even in our remote learning environment.

Learn about this year’s SGA  candidates and cast your vote next week! SGA elections are currently being held online September 15 at 8:01am through Sept. 17 at 11:59pm. All positions are elected by the student body (Central Piedmont employees do not vote).

My name is Jamie Roldan-Moquete, Executive Director for the Campus Activities Board (CAB) for the 2020-2021 academic year. CAB is a student-led organization that provides social, educational, and recreational events and activities. 

As an organization that serves the Central Piedmont Campus Community, our goal is to offer opportunities to strengthen student engagement and enhance your college experience. Although we would love to be on campus interacting with each other face-to-face, we’ve worked hard throughout the summer transitioning to a 100% virtual environment. The best part is we can now stay connected across all Central Piedmont campuses.

Did you know that all of the events we host are free and developed by students, just like you? Take a break from the books and get involved in several fun and memorable events this fall semester.

Listen to relaxing music or top hits while you re-create historic works of art. You will be able to engage with other students, staff, and share your works. Zoom link.
  5. “Lunch and Introduction,” Thursday, September 3 from 12pm-1pm: The Library and Academic Learning Center will present information regarding virtual services and engage directly with students to answer questions and provide resources. Zoom link.

Virtual Student Resources Week

Student Life is excited to host the first virtual Student Resources Week. We recognize the challenges that can come with taking classes remotely. Join us for Student Resources week, September 8 through 11, to learn from the many different resources the college offers to help you succeed as a student at Central Piedmont.

Throughout the week, you can watch videos about each support resource on FlipGrid. In their video, each support service will introduce themselves and what they offer. Student Life staff will also be available on Zoom each day from 3:30–4:30 p.m. to answer your questions.

As part of participating in Student Resources Week, you can enter to win one of three Apple AirPods with wired charging case. 

To participate, join us for the Zoom meeting each day, or go directly to FlipGrid to submit any questions regarding the resources available. You will need to sign in using your Central Piedmont login credentials. Learn more about Student Resources Week.
