60 Years Strong: new Library exhibit on Central Piedmont

Exhibit of Central Piedmont artifacts of photos, brochures and historical items surrounding a large tree with the college seal on the tree trunk.“60 Years Strong – How Deep Our Roots Go,” an exhibition by the Central Piedmont Archives, celebrates Central Piedmont’s rich history and the success of our institution over six decades.

Our college seal inspires the crafted tree and represents our growth into a “mighty tree” of an institution in Mecklenburg County. When viewing the display, you will learn about some of the many examples of educational opportunities championed by our current and past presidents displayed along the bottom of the case, symbolized as the roots. Evidence of these opportunities’ positive impact on student success is represented by the branches and leaves that have grown from these roots.

This exhibition is dedicated to our students of present, past, and future who make an impact in historic ways.

‘Building your Coping Toolbox’ workshops

Counseling Services will be hosting a virtual coping skills series in September on Thursdays from 2-3:30 p.m.

Counselor is a whiteboard and talks with people who are seated.

This series is for any student wanting to learn ways to manage feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. This series will also focus on how to form and maintain meaningful relationships. You can sign up for as many of the sessions as you would like, they are held virtually on WebEx.

Central Piedmont is marking it’s 60th anniversary on Sept. 18. As part of that celebration, you’re invited to a panel discussion of the Central Piedmont Mural of History.

Using the mural in the Parr Center as a focus, this discussion will spotlight:
  • the art and artists behind the work
  • the collaboration between the artists and the Central Piedmont archives
  • the use of art to convey historical content
  • the history of Central Piedmont within the larger world
The panel will include archivist Erin Allsop, gallery coordinator Amelia Zytka, art instructor Mary Kilburn, and three members of our history department (instructors Nerlynn Etienne and Noah Goode, and professor Hugh Dussek).

Be a Student Ambassador for 2023-24

Student ambassadors are student leaders who serve as official liaisons between the college, students and their families, guests, alumni, and friends of the college.

Student ambassador is a highly respected title and a great résumé builder. Other reasons you should become a student ambassador:

  • Get a scholarship of up to $1,700 per semester.
  • Gain real-world job skills, such as communication and interpersonal skills, and grow personally and professionally.
  • Meet other students.
  • Represent the college at recruitment events; attend exclusive college activities and events.
  • Participate in community service activities.
  • Network with community members and potential employers.
  • Make a positive impact on prospective and current students.

‘Parallel Lives’ highlights history of Central High and Second Ward High Schools

The Central Piedmont Archives is proud to announce the opening of the exhibition: “Parallel Lives – Central High and Second Ward High School.” This exhibition highlights the centennial history of Central High and Second Ward High Schools (both opened in 1923), celebrates the memories of its students and alumni groups, and raises awareness about the importance of historical preservation and landmarks laws in North Carolina.

Central High School and Second Ward High School were built to fulfill the growing educational needs of Charlotte students in the early twentieth century; Second Ward High School serving Black students and Central High School serving White students. It was not until 1957 that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools would integrate Black and White students. With Central High situated along Elizabeth Avenue and Second Ward along Alexander Street, the schools were within walking distance from one another. However, students shared similar, yet separate, experiences due to segregation.

Exactly 100 years after the construction of these buildings, Central High’s facility remains standing as part of the Central Campus of Central Piedmont Community College, while the Second Ward gymnasium and a historical marker plaque are all that remain of Second Ward High School— physical reminders which serve as testaments to the importance of landmarks preservation.

Visitors can see this exhibition in person until May 8, 2023 by visiting the exhibition hallway next to the Central Piedmont Archives (Central Campus, Parr Center, Hagemeyer Library, Third Floor).

The exhibit was made possible due to partners from Johnson C. Smith University, UNC Charlotte, the Second Ward High School National Alumni Foundation, and the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room. Additionally, thank you to Central Piedmont Instructor of Real Estate Education Cynthia White Williams, her mother Vernie Johnson-White, and her father Randolph White for loaning Second Ward yearbooks to this exhibition project.

A hands-on virtual visit allows the healthcare provider on the video call to see inside your ears, throat and more to make a diagnosis.

It’s allergy season, did you know that you can get care for minor illnesses from Atrium Health, without leaving campus?

Appointments for the Atrium Health community-based virtual clinic can be made a day in advance and you can often get care the SAME day! The clinic is open at Central Campus, Monday- Friday, 8 a.m.- 4p.m.

More than a standard video visit, in-person support staff use special technology to help the healthcare provider look in your ears or throat, check your temperature, take your blood pressure, and more. The healthcare provider can then give you a diagnosis or send in prescriptions as needed. If your condition isn’t contagious, you can get back to your day with little interruption, without taking time away from school or work.

Duo app required for Central Piedmont accounts

Green "Duo" app logo with stylized text.Central Piedmont uses Duo as its multifactor authentication (MFA) app, which sends a notification to your smartphone or other device to confirm your identity after you enter your username and password. All accounts will be required to use Duo beginning on March 6.

SET UP DUO FOR THE FIRST TIME
Use the Account Management Portal to set up your smartphone or other device to use Duo. You will use your Central Piedmont username and password. Make sure to select the “student” domain.

Central Piedmont Black History Month events

Since its conception as National Negro Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Wooden, the month of February is a special time for individuals around the world to acknowledge, remember and share the enriching African-American experience as part of American history, to help foster more equity and inclusion, and to embrace America’s diversity. Learn more about the origins of Black History Month and this year’s theme: Black Resistance.

Tangled & Twisted: Understanding the Dynamics of Black Hair

Join us for an engaging and enlightening presentation on the history, social and political stigmas and unspoken implications about ‘black hair’- a double-headed cultural enigma that is too often stereotyped and misunderstood.

This presentation will be facilitated by Ms. LaTika “Tika” Mercer, a former adjunct instructor at Central Piedmont’s nationally recognized cosmetology program and co-owner of Lucky You Salon and Suites.

Black Resistance: Forms of Opposition 1600s-1800s

Through the lens of history, music, psychology, and literature, discussion about forms of opposition from enslaved people from the lens of history, music, psychology, and literature. Join us for this in person and live-streamed event to gain insight on how black resistance from this time period still influences perceptions in today’s world.

‘Archival Photos Reimagined’ exhibit opening at Library

Archives are more than just a collection of old papers, photographs, and artifacts. They provide windows into the past, making them valuable resources for learning our history and its lessons.
They can also be sources of inspiration for creative expression. What was once a static black-and-white photograph can become a springboard for a creative sketch, illustration, or painting.
That’s the idea behind Archival Photos Reimagined, a collaborative project between the Central Piedmont Archives and the Visual Arts Club that encourages members of the Central Piedmont community to create works of art inspired by our photographs and publications collections.
Opening on February 6, we invite you to visit the exhibition in the Archives Reading Room, where you will find a display of artworks incorporating elements from the archival photos that inspired them and varying in style, medium, and subject matter.
