Casting Call for Freaky Friday, the musical

Disney Freaky Friday- a new musicalAuditions for Central Piedmont Community College’s fall production, Freaky Friday (Nov. 10-19), will
take place Sept. 20-22 in Overcash 300, at Central Campus.

Please pick one audition time slot via the SignUp Genius link  for either Sept. 20 or 21, between 6-8 p.m. Dance Call will commence after the final slot each audition day for all
who auditioned that day (8-10 p.m.). Callbacks will be Sept. 22 from 6-9 p.m.

For auditions: Please bring a 90 second contemporary monologue and a 16-32 bar cut from a song (you may use music from Freaky Friday). Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for your scheduled time slot.

Please also bring clothes you can move in for the Dance Call. You may leave after an earlier audition slot and return for the Dance Call at 8 p.m.

Jericho Brown is author of the “The Tradition,” for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and he is the winner of the Whiting Award. Brown’s first book, “Please,” won the American Book Award. His second book, “The New Testament,” won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His third collection, The covers of two of Jerico's books: "The Tradition" and "How We Do It."The Tradition, won the Paterson Poetry Prize and was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His poems have appeared in The Bennington Review, Buzzfeed, Fence, jubilat, The New Republic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, TIME, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is the director of the Creative Writing Program and a professor at Emory University.

In addition to being a celebrated poet and warm, engaging teacher, Brown is
the editor of the new anthology “How We Do It: Black Writers on Craft, Practice, and Skill.”

Investigate the Makerspace in the Library

Central Campus Library, in the Parr Center, offers 3D printing, laser engraving and cutting, sewing and embroidery, vinyl cutting, large format printing, and an array of arts and craft supplies to help you get started making. For more information about our Makerspace, check out our guide.

Cato, Harper, Harris, Levine, and Merancas Libraries offer 3D printing,  vinyl cutting, and other amenities. Stop by your local library, meet your librarians, and check out the makerspace activities available for you to start making.

Shoot hoops at basketball open gym

Worrell gym at Central Campus shows college logos on the court and 6 basketball hoops Open Gym for basketball returns to Central Campus beginning Wednesday Sept. 6. Basketball will be available at the Worrell Gym on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3- 5:30 p.m.

Stay tuned for more information on other sports coming soon, including soccer, volleyball, and some special events you won’t want to miss.

Bring your student ID and appropriate shoes to participate in basketball. Register and sign the waiver.

New tutoring and academic support options

Two students and an employee studying and working together to learn.The Academic Learning Center (ALC) has launched new tutoring options to help you be successful in your classes, with choices to get academic support throughout the day, evening, and on weekends.

You have two options to receive academic support. You can make an appointment with an ALC tutor right here on campus for either in-person or virtual support during the day.
You can also make a virtual appointment with a Brainfuse tutor, for appointments after 5 p.m. in the evenings, and on weekends.

Review the full student user guide for all the details, and learn how to:

  • Access the ALC Academic Support Platform
  • Make an appointment with an ALC Tutor using Tutor Match
  • Make an appointment with a Brainfuse tutor using Live Help

Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • You must login to Brightspace to access the ALC Academic Support Platform
  • You will find the ALC Academic Support link under the “Student Resources” widget in Brightspace, or directly through your live courses in Brightspace (if your instructor added it to your live course).

Catalyst Coffee Bar is open at Cato, Central and Levine Campuses, from 7:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. They offer a selection of beverages and grab-and-go food items.

Beach & Borough Sandwich Shop is open at Central and Levine Campuses 10:30 a.m.- 2 p.m.

For all locations, you can save time if you order ahead and pay through your account with the Connect & Pay app. Our food service is cashless, so vouchers are also available at the Cashiering Business office in $5 and $10 increments if you only have cash.

The Harris, Harper and Merancas Campus Catalyst Coffee Bar locations will be opening later in fall 2023. All Central Piedmont Campuses also have microwaves and vending options.

Looking for the CAT building at Central Campus?

Student works at a pottery wheel.Many of our arts classes at Central Campus are held in the Center for Arts Technology (CAT) building– with pottery and jewelry studios, and lots of specialized space for photography, 2D and 3D art, painting, and more.

Construction continues at the CAT building, however, all classrooms in the building are open for use. Parking Lot 15 at the rear of the building will remain closed until construction is completed later this year. We can’t wait to see what art you will create in your classes!

Crosswalk Work Impacts Elizabeth Ave. Aug. 7-11

Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) will re-stripe a number of street crosswalks on Central Campus the week of Aug. 7-11. This will require at times the complete closure of Elizabeth Avenue to vehicular traffic. During other times, lanes will be closed along Elizabeth Avenue.

From Aug. 7-9, from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., each evening, Elizabeth Avenue, from N. Kings Drive to Charlottetowne Avenue, will be closed to vehicular traffic.

From Aug. 8-11, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., each day, CDOT will need to close lanes on Elizabeth Avenue to complete the re-striping. This will cause traffic delays.

If you are coming to Central Campus the week of Aug. 7-11, you should avoid driving on Elizabeth Avenue. Traffic congestion is likely. CDOT has said the CityLynx Gold Line will NOT be affected.

Free Shakespeare Performances July 14-16

If you’ve never been able to understand a word of Shakespeare, let the Central Piedmont Drama Club be your translators! Modern scenes play hand in hand with the original text, making the sonnets come alive!

“Will and Whimsy: Sixteen Dramatically Illustrated Sonnets of Shakespeare” is free to attend and appropriate for audiences of all ages.

Performances will take place at Central Campus in the Parr Center’s New Theater on:

  • July 14 & 15 at 7:30 p.m.
  • July 16 at 2:30 p.m.

 

Volunteer for Patient Simulation for Healthcare Students

Student in EMT program takes the blood pressure of a medical mannequin.Health Professions and Human Services is launching a Standardized Participant (SP) program, and we are seeking enthusiastic volunteers from Central Piedmont to participate and contribute to this invaluable initiative.

Standardized participants are individuals trained to portray various roles, such as patient and family members, in specific medical scenarios and patient cases for the purpose of teaching and evaluating healthcare students. By volunteering as a standardized participant, you will play an essential role in training our health profession students to enhance their communication skills, clinical examinations, and overall patient care abilities. As an SP, you will have the opportunity to simulate diverse clinical encounters, providing our students with realistic scenarios to practice their skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Participating in our SP program not only benefits our Health Professions and Human Services students, but it also offers tremendous personal and professional growth opportunities for you. You will gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare field, develop empathy and effective communication skills, and contribute to the education of future healthcare providers.

Simulations will take place at Central Campus. Our goal is to recruit and train of a pool of potential volunteers that we can pull from, and you will be able to volunteer for days/times that work for your schedule. We are seeking a wide range of diversity for our simulations, so all ages, and demographics are encouraged to volunteer.

Summer Hours for Campus Services

Meet with advisors, get career help, study in the library, and get a jump on fall. The college is shifting its core hours of operation for the summer 2023 semester, beginning May 12.

Standard hours will resume in August. Review adjusted hours for these campus services:

Student Services & Welcome Centers (assistance from Navigators):

  • Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.- 6 p.m.
  • Friday, 7:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.

Business Cashiering Office:

  • Monday- Thursday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
  • Friday, 8 a.m.- 12 p.m.

Campus Store locations– Campus Stores are located at Cato, Central, and Levine Campuses:

The Central Piedmont Professional Clothing Closet is here to help with up to four professional, gently-used outfits, to help you build your work wardrobe.

The closet is located at Central Campus in the Worrell Building and is available for students. You can sign up for a Tuesday shopping date in the Google Form.

Student Art Show Open through July 27

Sculptures, ceramics and photographs on display in the annual juried student art show.Each year, Central Piedmont’s Visual Arts Department hosts the Annual Juried Student Art Show, recognizing student works in ceramics, 2D and 3D design, drawing, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

You can experience the entire show through the exhibit at Central Campus, inside the Overcash Center in the Ross and Overcash Art Galleries. The Annual Juried Student Art Show will be open through July 27, Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Student artwork is chosen by a judge to be included in this celebratory exhibition to showcase our students’ work completed in their studio classes.

Students who have works featured in the show receive a variety of awards, ranging from the Presidential Purchase Award; Foundation Purchase Award; first, second, and third place awards; along with several others.
