Library Virtual Reality Workshops

Library staff will review safety procedures, guide you through an interactive tutorial, and go over what software is offered.

Workshops will begin the week of March 27 and run for three weeks through April 14.

Train for a high-demand career in Nondestructive Examination

For pipes, bridges, airplanes, energy production, and for so many manufacturing parts, infrastructure must be examined for cracks, leaks, and problems before they occur. The industry that carefully examines this critical infrastructure is called nondestructive examination (NDE), because it uses testing methods like ultrasound, magnetic particles, and x-rays to see inside components for problems, without destroying or damaging the piece.

This career is only growing with aging infrastructure in the US, and skills you learn can be applied across many industries with a median salary of $65,236.

Central Piedmont is one of only a handful of schools in the nation that offers an associate degree in nondestructive examination, and our program teaches six different testing techniques. Graduates from Central Piedmont have more than a 90% employment rate in the industry. 

Central Piedmont’s nondestructive examination technology program will train you to be a valuable asset in both product manufacturer and service inspection industries through hands-on learning in both classroom and lab settings.

New Line Worker program launching with Duke Energy grant

Duke Energy has given Central Piedmont Community College a grant of $500,000 to create a utility line worker training program at the college’s Harper Campus. Duke Energy and Central Piedmont leaders announced plans for the program during a Nov. 29 event, at a Duke Energy operations center, in Charlotte.Duke Energy employee in a hard hat is climbing a telephone pole while wearing a safety harness. Central Piedmont will use the grant to provide instructional support and purchase some of the equipment, materials, and supplies needed to launch and sustain the new 16-week training program. The new program will open in spring 2023, with the first of three planned cohorts of 12 students. Once the program is up and running at capacity, overlapping and staggering the program’s start dates throughout the academic year will enable the college to produce as many as 144 graduates every 12 months.

“This partnership program will give our diverse student body the opportunity to learn about and engage with a career pathway they may not have considered previously,” said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, Central Piedmont president. “This is a high-demand, specialized field with enormous growth potential. With utility line workers earning an estimated starting annual salary of $74,000, this is a career that can transform the lives of students and their families.”Duke Energy employee in bucket scoop is in the air near an electrical transformer on a utility pole. As part of the program, participants will complete a rigorous curriculum and achieve a 580-hour academic and field training goal. Students who complete the 16-week program will be able to enter the workforce quickly and will have earned multiple, specialized industry training credentials, including OSHA, CPR, Arc Flash Safety for Utilities, Bucket Truck Rescue, Class A CDL License, Pole Top Rescue, Trenching/Shoring/Confined Space Training, and Work Zone Flagger.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates about 23,000 openings for line installers and repairers will be available each year, on average, over the next decade. With this trend in mind, the partnership seeks to develop a pipeline of diverse, skilled, and talented utility line workers by investing in the education and career development of local citizens.

Central Piedmont blood drive was a success

On Thursday, Sept. 15, Central Piedmont hosted a blood drive simultaneously for our entire Central Piedmont community on all six campuses. One Blood, our community partner, is very pleased with the success of the event. They collected from 85 donors which will go on to impact the lives of up to 255 local patients when needed!

OneBlood was able to collect:

  • Harris Campus – 6 procedures, 7 products

Learn more about technical careers in industrial inspections

Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) technology is a collection of industrial inspection methods in high demand in the manufacturing and maintenance industries. NDE technology is used in power generation (nuclear and fossil), transportation (aviation, ship building, railroads, bridges), petrochemical, manufacturing, construction, and many other industries.

Central Piedmont is the only college in North Carolina to offer an associate degree in NDE. We teach the six core NDE methods: Ultrasonic, Radiography, Eddy Current, Magnetic Particle, Liquid Penetrant, and Visual Testing.

The industry has grown 12% over the last two years and is expected to grow by 26% over the next ten years. A career in NDE pays well and suits people who like to work with their heads and hands. Career paths in NDE can range from technician, engineering, supervision, management, sales, or independent contractor.

Congratulations are in order for Central Piedmont student, and winner of the 2022 Outstanding Registered Apprentice — Jahmicah Miller.  ApprenticeshipNC is the State Apprenticeship Agency which works with employers, register programs, register apprentices, and training programs to help employers of all sizes find talented professionals who can meet their workforce needs. Apprenticeships benefit both employers and employees; apprentices can earn progressive wages while learning valuable skills and obtaining nationally recognized credentials.

New Cashiering On-Campus Office Hours

The Central Piedmont Cashiering Office at Central campus will be open from the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 5:00pm on Friday. The Cashiering office at Levine campus will be open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Cato, Harper, Harris, and Merancas will open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on December 14th.

These hours will remain in effect until December 23, 2020. Business Office services remain available online, via email, and via telephone.

Advisory: Holiday Break Safety Reminder

picture behind Weiss building showing open sidewalkThe college will close Nov. 26-29 for the Thanksgiving holiday. As we head into the holiday season, please remember to stay vigilant and safe as the COVID-19 pandemic persists. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has issued new guidelines for Thanksgiving celebrations and Black Friday shopping, in an effort to, “help North Carolinians gauge the risks, protect their friends and loved ones, and slow the spread of COVID-19.”​

After the holiday break, m​any employees and students will return to our campuses, and we want to continue providing a safe environment to learn and work. It’s up to all of us to follow the mask mandates and other prevention methods that are in effect across the state. Remember, if you develop any COVID-19 symptoms at all, please stay home and consult a doctor. The more we can keep COVID-19 off our campuses, the more we can provide in-person learning opportunities (such as lab classes and hands-on training) that so many of our courses require and so many of our students need to complete their educational goals.​

So remember – keep wearing your masks, keep a good social distance between yourself and others in public, avoid large indoor gatherings, wash your hands frequently, and stay home if you feel ill at all.

Advisory: In-person classes suspended; remote student services available

The college has suspended in-person classes in an effort to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. We’re partnering with local and state leaders on this comprehensive effort that’s requiring immediate action in every community. We’re doing all we can to keep our students, faculty, staff, and community as safe as possible. Please understand that the situation remains fluid, and we really appreciate your patience and flexibility.

Important Reminders

As a reminder, spring break for students has been extended one week, until March 23. The college is open but students should not report to campus.

Please remember: The short sessions of classes that were originally scheduled to begin March 16 have been moved to start next week on Monday, March 23. Registration for these 4-week and 8-week short sessions has been extended to March 22. Eligible students can use financial aid to buy books and supplies online for the second short session courses at Central Piedmont’s Barnes & Noble College bookstores. Since these are short session courses, it’s especially important to log in as soon as your classes start and begin work.

On March 23, the majority of our courses will resume online. Students enrolled in these classes should start receiving communication from instructors with details about how we will work to help you achieve your academic goals the best we can during this unprecedented situation. Check your college email often for communication from your instructors and the college concerning your classes next week.

During the coronavirus situation, Charter Communications is temporarily offering free access to Spectrum Internet. Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students, faculty, and staff who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. To enroll call 1.844.488.8395.

Federal Work Study Employees

Federal Work-Study (FWS) employees will continue to be paid monthly during the emergency period if they are unable to work due to college restrictions. The Financial Aid office will determine the total monthly Federal Work Study pay amount on an individual basis. Prior monthly Federal Work Study hours earned during the 2019-20 academic period will be considered.

We know that graduation ceremonies are on the minds of our students who are completing programs this semester. We are working to determine the best course of action and will update you as soon as we can.

By recommendation of Gov. Cooper, college-related events and large gatherings will be cancelled or postponed through April 30. Several departments are exploring remote learning methods and virtual options for programs. Students participating in college affiliated programs, groups, and clubs will be contacted directly with updates on virtual alternatives as they become available.

It is extremely important to stay connected and informed during this time. Visit the college’s COVID-19 Web page to review all announcements and instructions.

Again, please ensure you monitor your college email often as we will update conditions as soon as the information becomes available. We strongly recommend downloading the Central Piedmont Mobile app for your phone from the App store or the Google Play app store. This is a convenient way to access news, Blackboard, MyCollege, and your college email account. Finally, please connect with Central Piedmont social media. This is a fast, easy way to stay up-to-date.

This is new territory for the college, but we remain flexible in discovering ways to help our students complete the semester and to keep the college operating. We appreciate the patience of our students and their families as well as Central Piedmont faculty and staff as we work to preserve the health, safety, and academic needs of our students.

Top 5 Ways to Plug-In This Coming Week

Central Piedmont offers you a ton of ways to get involved, make friends, do good for others, and have fun. While we offer hundreds of unique experiences on each campus during the semester (calendar of events), here are the Top 5 Ways to Plug-In This Week.

  1. Black History Month: Film and Discussion (Levine Campus)- Wed., Feb. 26, 3pm-5pm: Watch “Selma” and join us for some discussion. Refreshments provided.
  2. It’s Showtime (Central Campus) – Thu., Feb. 27, 5:30pm-7:30pm: Come out to the North Classroom building, room 1123 and watch your favorite shows and movies from the late 1990s and early 2000s with the Central campus Activity Board! Make new friends, have some snacks, and have a lot of fun! Contact justin.knoll@cpcc.edu with any questions or how to get involved!
  3. Service-In-Action Event: Latta Nature Preserve (Off-Campus) – Sat., Feb. 29, 9am-1:30pm and 1pm-5pm: THERE ARE TWO SHIFTS YOU MAY SIGN UP FOR ON THIS PROJECT. First shift: 9am-1:30pm Second Shift: 1pm-5pm Address: The Latta Nature Preserve, 5226 Sample Road, Huntersville NC, 28078. Student volunteers will assist with a variety of stations, including but not limited to: crafts, games, registration, assisting with shuttles, preparing free popcorn, tending fire pits, etc. Please dress according to the weather as this event is outside. Feel free to dress in fairy-themed clothing! **20 volunteers requested for each shift.
  4. Food Pantry Open House (Harper Campus) -Mon., March 2, 2pm-4pm:
    Did you know each campus has an emergency food pantry? During this open house event, faculty, staff, and students can stop by to learn more about the food pantry and how we fight hunger on campus. Contact lindsey.graves@cpcc.edu with questions
  5. Women’s Suffrage/Voter Rights Program (Central Campus) – Tue., March 3, 11am-12pm in Tate Hall: Come out and learn about the 100 year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment that gave women in the US the right to vote! The presentation will also include other voter rights issues and Q+A. Presentation is being facilitated by the League of Women’s Voters – Charlotte. Contact justin.knoll@cpcc.edu to become involved.
