New Pathway for Teachers Created from Community Colleges To UNC

woman standing in front of a projector screen presentingNorth Carolina education leaders signed an agreement on Aug. 23, to address the critical teacher shortage in the state. President Thomas Stith of the North Carolina Community College System and President Peter Hans of the University of North Carolina System made a joint announcement of their new Comprehensive Articulation Agreement that will increase opportunities for community college students to transfer to teacher education programs within the UNC System. It is effective beginning fall 2021.

The “Uniform Articulation Agreement in Teacher Education / Educator Preparation” is focused on developing a seamless transfer pathway for students who begin teacher preparation studies in the Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP) and the Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP) programs at a community college and then transfer to one of the educator preparation programs within the UNC System to complete a bachelor’s degree and become a licensed teacher in the K-12 system.

The agreement includes 52 of North Carolina’s “Great 58” community colleges – including Central Piedmont – and 15 universities within the UNC System. Additional community colleges will offer the new transfer degrees for fall 2022.

If you see something, say something

Welcome to the fall semester! Campus safety is the top priority of Central Piedmont’s College Security and Emergency Management teams. We take this opportunity to remind you of the information available on Central Piedmont’s website about What To Do In An Emergency, for situations including an active shooter, severe weather, fire, and more.

We all play a role in safety at the college and that’s why we ask you to review the college’s Safety and Security video by the end of this week to familiarize yourself with safety and security protocols at the college.

Most importantly, Central Piedmont relies on its students and employees to be the eyes and ears of the college, so if you see or hear something, please say something. If you have a concern of an immediate threat, please call Central Piedmont College Security Services at 704.330.6911.

If you know of behavior that is concerning or disruptive to the college community, please use the online form at this site to report a concern for referral to the Care Team.

Classroom phone paging system test Wednesday

In an urgent situation, the college can page all phones in classrooms at once, by campus. Please be aware we will test the phone paging system Wednesday (August 25) at 10 a.m.

Take a moment to add or update your mobile phone number and other contact information in our Critical Alert emergency text/phone/email system. It’s important to keep your contact information updated because this is how the college will message you if classes are canceled or impacted due to inclement weather or if there’s an emergency situation. Here’s how:

  • Use your Central Piedmont login and password to access MyCollege
  • Select the person icon for “User Options” on your mobile or desktop screen
  • Select “User Profile”
  • Add or update your mobile number

Please note you cannot opt-out of Critical Alert notification emails to your Central Piedmont account because your college email is the official channel of communication.

We all play a role in safety at the college. If there’s an active shooter on or near a Central Piedmont campus, would you know what to do? It’s incredibly important for students and employees to be prepared. Please take a moment today to review this powerful video to learn about the “Run. Hide. Fight.” concept to help you know what to do if an active shooter is on campus or in a building where you are located.

That “run, hide, fight” video is also included in the college’s required Safety and Security video that we hope you took time to review last week.

Also, please be aware there are construction and maintenance projects on several Central Piedmont campuses that could cause issues. Gov. Cooper Coronavirus Update, Face Masks No Longer Required Outdoors

orange graphic COVID 19North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced today (April 28) face masks are no longer required outdoors, and mass gathering limits will increase to 100 people indoors and 200 outdoors beginning this Friday (April 30).

According to the governor’s office, “Under the new Executive Order, masks will still be required indoors but are no longer mandated outdoors.”

Ongoing, statewide business restrictions will remain in effect, at least until June 1. These include:

  • Retail shops, personal care businesses and museums can operate at full capacity.
  • Restaurants are limited to 75% capacity inside, but 100% outside. This includes breweries, wineries, amusement parks, gyms, and pools.
  • Bars and nightclubs, live performance venues, movie theaters, reception venues, conference centers, and sports arenas are limited to 50% capacity.

Last week, Cooper said many North Carolina pandemic restrictions, like capacity limits and social distancing requirements, could end June 1.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 27 updated its mask guidelines to say people who are fully vaccinated can safely resume attending small outdoor gatherings without wearing a mask.

Johnson C. Smith University announces admission program with Central Piedmont

Johnson C. Smith University President Clarence Armbrister [left] and Central Piedmont Community College President Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer

On April 8, 2021, leadership for Johnson C. Smith University and Central Piedmont Community College announced “JCSU Connect”– a new bachelor’s degree pathway that will expand college access to more students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and beyond. This new collaboration is part of JCSU President Clarence D. Armbrister’s mission to help address the lack of economic upward mobility in Charlotte by providing local students a guided pathway to earn bachelor’s degrees from JCSU.

“For more than 150 years, JCSU has been a leader in providing educational access,” said Armbrister. “As the University continues to focus on providing opportunities to address economic upward mobility in Charlotte, we look forward to this new partnership with Central Piedmont Community College to assist those seeking bachelor’s degrees and experience Charlotte’s HBCU, the only HBCU in partnership with Central Piedmont.”

JCSU Connect is a “2+2” program, meaning participating students will complete an associate degree at Central Piedmont and a bachelor’s degree at JCSU. During the first two years of study, students in the JCSU Connect Program will take classes at Central Piedmont and engage in intentional career and academic workshops at JCSU. During the third-year, students will enroll at JCSU and be placed in an on-campus paid internship (via federal work study) at JCSU that correlates with their field of study. During the final year of study, participants will complete their academic program at JCSU and engage in experiential learning, including internships and undergraduate research.

“We are excited to partner with Johnson C. Smith University and thrilled to offer this pathway to our students,” said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, Central Piedmont president. “JCSU Connect will be a wonderful program for our students who want to earn a four-year degree. We know they will flourish at JCSU. At the same time, this transfer program is another great example of the higher education community in Charlotte working together to build more avenues to opportunity and enhance our community’s economic mobility.”
