The Hammer earns Superior rating in national REALM contest

HammersThe Hammer, the literary and arts magazine of Central Piedmont Community College, has been named a Superior magazine in the 2025 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest. 

Schools from 44 states, Washington, D.C., and six countries nominated 456 student magazines for this year’s competition. Middle school, high school, and higher-education publications were all eligible for recognition.

The REALM program publicly celebrates exceptional student literary magazines produced with the support of teachers and advisers. The program is designed to encourage schools to create publications that highlight the art and craft of writing.

  • A total of 456 student magazines were nominated across the United States and abroad.

Students graduating in May 2026 are invited to apply. 

Kristen Alvarado Sorto addressed the class of 2025 in December, reflecting on the importance of pursuing dreams and staying resilient. She told graduates, “We are the generation of rewriting our stories…”

Did you know: Cytotechnology

Cytotechnologists study human cells under a microscope to help doctors detect cancer, abnormalities, and other diseases early. At Central Piedmont, students in the cytotechnology program learn to analyze human anatomy, histology, and pathology while working closely with pathologists in real laboratory settings. 

Why it matters 

This advanced program prepares students for a high‑demand career that directly supports early disease detection and patient care. Students must already hold a bachelor’s degree before beginning the program and are eligible to sit for certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) upon completion.

  • 100 percent first‑attempt board‑certification pass rate 
  • Most graduates secure employment immediately after certification 
  • Training occurs in professional labs with hands‑on experience

Truist Honors Scholars elected to national board 

Two Central Piedmont Truist Honors Scholars have been elected to the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) board of directors as student-at-large members, representing honors students across the country and elevating the community-college voice in national conversations.

Basira Ayazi and Jesse Abdoulaye will help shape national honors programming, with a focus on research, equity, and student success. Their leadership reflects the transformative learning opportunities available at Central Piedmont.
