Artist Lecture Monday, September 9 at 2:00 in Tate Hall followed by an artist led tour in Ross Gallery

The exhibit will feature a collection of ceramic and porcelain works inspired by the concept of identification. Born in the United Kingdom, Williams recently became a citizen of the United States, a process that required the documentation of her physical body through fingerprinting. This experience inspired her to explore the ways people identify themselves from a cultural and geographical standpoint.

As a result, she commonly uses her fingerprint as a starting point; with digital and hands-on techniques, she translates it into a porcelain relief piece, creating topographic and architectural structures. This juxtaposition, using a technological program to digitally map out ways to manipulate an ancient, organic material, led her to a new question of identity: humanity’s place in a technological world.

Opening Reception Recap: Self-Portraits Inspired by Alberto Giacometti

On Thursday, June 27, Ross Gallery hosted an opening reception for the exhibition Self-Portraits Inspired by Alberto Giacometti. We welcomed our friends from the Bechtler Museum and Mallard Creek high school to celebrate the accomplishments of a group of talented high schoolers whose paintings were on view. Guests enjoyed a lecture on the life of Giacometti by Christopher Lawing, Vice President of Programming and Research at the Bechtler Museum, and after, a few short words by students who participated.

Thanks to all who joined us for this wonderful reception.

Mallard Creek High School Art Instructor Beth Lasure (L) worked with Bechtler Museum resident artist Ginny Boyd (R) in guiding the students with the project

Self-Potraits Inspired by Alberto Giacometti

June 21 – August 5, 2013
10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday – Thursday

Opening reception: June 27, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

As part of an educational outreach program with the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Central Piedmont Community College  will display a series of self-portraits created by Mallard Creek High School students that were inspired by a special exhibition at the museum, “Giacometti: Memory and Presence.”

The Bechtler exhibition showcased Giacometti’s life and career, portraying him as one of the most recognized 20th century modernists. The class of 17 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students visited the museum to view the artist’s works in person.  During the visit, students were able to examine each Giacometti piece in detail, including the many techniques the artist used to create each work of art. Following the field trip, the high school students were able to return to their Advanced Visual Arts class and apply the same artistic methods to their own self-portraits.

Please join us in honoring these CMS students at an opening reception on Thursday, June 27 from 5:30-7.  Vice President of programming and research, Christopher Lawing, will give a short presentation.

Special thanks goes to Erica Somerwitz, School and Community Programs Manager at the Becthler, Beth Lasure, Mallard Creek High School Advanced Visual Art instructor, and Ginny Boyd, teaching artist-in-residence at the Bechtler Museum.
