We have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news, beginning January 5, 2009 CPCC Libraries will provide access to new library databases for student, faculty, and staff use. Now, the bad news, access to some of our current databases will be discontinued at that time. See the list below for details.

We’ve been busy throughout the month of October adding new materials to our collections for the entire CPCC community to enjoy. Among them is a book titled Running with the Rhinos : Courageous Leadership for a Complex World.

Titles like The Encyclopedia of Food and Culture, Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health, and others used to only exist in print, but many of them are now online and available through the CPCC Library website.
These reference works have been through the publishing process and are professionally edited for factual errors — they’re a great resource for background information on a particular topic. We subscribe to a few different collections of online reference titles. Check the links below for titles available in each collection. These resources can also be found in the “Find-an Article” section of the library website. If you are off-campus you will prompted to enter your SNAP ID and password for access.
Gale Virtual Reference Library
Offers 25 specialized encyclopedias on topics from art to animal sciences.
This collection has a emphasis on history and literature.
General encyclopedia with enhanced features, such as access to magazine and journal articles.
Provides definitions to over 500,000 words, access to over 2.5 million quotations, pronunciation, spellings, and etymology.
Get out your preferred reading aid — bifocals, monocles, contact lenses, or just a good old pair of eyes. We’ve got a TON of new materials for you at CPCC Libraries. Our new titles run the gamut on a wide variety of subjects. Some titles from the list: Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy through Jokes, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, and College Majors and Careers : a Resource Guide for Effective Life Planning.

EBSCO, one of the library’s databases vendors, is offering free access to an environmental database, GreenFILE, at www.greeninfoonline.com. GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles as well.

There’s a new way to search CPCC Library materials called All-Search. All-Search allows CPCC Library users to search our library catalog for books, multiple magazine and journal databases for articles, and some pre-selected websites from one search box, eliminating the need to repeat the same search in each resource. All you need to do is enter your search terms and pick one or more categories to search. Librarians have assigned the most relevant resources to each category to make it easier for you to find reliable information faster.
All-Search can be found in the “Find-an-article” section of the Library web site. For a quick video tutorial on using All-Search click here. This resource is available from on-campus and off-campus, with the use of your SNAP ID.
