Resource of the Month: Opposing Viewpoints

CPCC Libraries featured resource of the month for October is Opposing Viewpoints.  Opposing Viewpoints is an extremely useful source for reliable information about current events.  It contains a number of different resources relating to major social issues, including differing viewpoints, magazine and journal articles and relevant statistics. Opposing Viewpoints is located in the Research Databases area of the library website.

The library has also put together an online video tutorial with instructions on using this resource.  This tutorial and others are located in the Quick Tutorials section of our website.

Learn a New Language… Online!

CPCC Students and faculty have access to Mango Languages through October 20th, 2010. The library is considering purchasing this resource. Give Mango a try and let us know what you think! Contact Kimberley Balcos (kimberley.balcos@cpcc.edu) with questions or comments.

Mango is an online language learning system that teaches real conversation skills for practical communication. Through fun and engaging interactive lessons, Mango makes learning a new language fast, easy and incredibly effective. Choose from 36 guided language experiences, 14 English as a second language experiences, and different levels of fluency.

Mango’s lessons copy the way people learn when surrounded by a foreign culture – through practical conversation. Every lesson incorporates all 4 conversational components (Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Grammar and Culture), each of which is critical to your ability to communicate in a foreign language. At the same time, you’ll be increasing your ability to actually USE what you learn, with a variety of critical thinking and memory exercises. As you listen to and repeat after native speakers, you’ll learn more than just words and phrases. You’ll learn how those pieces can be rearranged and combined to make new thoughts and new conversations.

The Mango system is completely web-based and remotely accessible, so you can learn anywhere you have an internet connection.

CPCC Libraries Open House!

Ever thrown a pie at a librarian?  You’ll get a rare chance to do that on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Library Open House at Central Campus. Attendees may play games such as cornhole or participate in a pie eating contest with pies made by CPCC’s very own Chef Blount.  Great door prizes and free hot dogs will be available.  Also, meet the library staff at this unique event that you won’t want to miss!

Group Study Rooms and Laptop Bar

Did you know that you can reserve a Group Study Room at the Central Campus Library for two hours, as long as you have a valid CPCC ID and at least two people in your group?

Also, if you are looking for a place to tap on your laptop for a while, you may want to park yourself at our Laptop Bar on the 4th floor of the Central Library. It has a high counter, high chairs, and power outlets conveniently located on the bar. Enjoy!
