Students, you’re invited to join Disability Services in a series of workshops to help you with academic success! Our Learning Coach Intern, Dawn Long, will be facilitating the workshops and guest speakers will present a different topic every week. Students who are registered with Disability Services are welcome to attend. Even if you can’t stay for the full 2 hours, that’s OK! Come any time during the 1-3pm time slot.

Staff and faculty, please join us for an experiential learning opportunity! Presenters will highlight various disability cases and discuss the outcomes of each. Upon completion learners will increase their knowledge and level of comfort when responding to students with disabilities.

NC AHEAD student scholarship for spring 2017. Apply now! Application deadline is Feb. 13!

North Carolina Association on Higher Education and Disability (NC AHEAD) is offering 3 scholarships, which are $500 each for 2017. You must be registered with Disability Services and working with a Disability Counselor in order to apply for the scholarship.

Here is more information about the eligibility criteria from NC AHEAD:

A total of three *scholarships ($500 each) are available—one scholarship will be awarded in each of the following categories:

  • an *undergraduate student enrolled in a program leading to a Bachelor’s Degree at a private college or university in North Carolina
  • The Jim Kessler Scholarship” an *undergraduate student enrolled in a program leading to a Bachelor’s Degree at a public college or university in North Carolina
  • a student enrolled in degree or certificate program at a 2-year/community college in North Carolina

*Please note students are only considered eligible if they are seeking a 2 year degree OR their first bachelor’s degree. Second bachelor degree seeking students are not eligible to receive this award.

Criteria for these scholarships include:

  1. Applicant MUST be an undergraduate student with a disability registered with the disability services office on your campus.
  2. Disability Services Provider at your institution MUST be a member of NC AHEAD for the 2016-2017 academic year
  3. Applicants are evaluated based on: a) leadership and service to campus and/or community, b) academic achievement, c) well-articulated goals
  4. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA

(An unofficial transcript is required that verifies the cumulative GPA from the current institution from beginning of matriculation to the Spring 2017 semester)

The applicants must submit a complete package including the following:

  • Completed Scholarship Application (page 3)
  • Copy of unofficial transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from faculty at College/University and one from another professional from the college/university)
  • One-Two page personal essay including the following:
    • Leadership and service to campus or community
    • Academic achievement
    • Career goals/aspirations

The deadline for the completed scholarship application (including all required documents) is Monday, February 13, 2017 at 5p.m. Scholarships packets are to be submitted to Georgieann Bogdan, Awards, Scholarships and Grants Committee Chair at georgieann.bogdan@greensboro.edu or fax to 336-271-6634 by the deadline to be considered for the award.  The 2017 Student Scholarship recipients will be announced at the NC AHEAD Spring Conference.

*Please note: The NC AHEAD Scholarship will be applied directly to the recipient’s tuition and will not be made available to be applied to books, living and/or other personal expenses.

Disability Services recognizes volunteers and supporters at the Disability Services Appreciation Reception

On December 13th, the first Disability Services Appreciation Reception was held to recognize those who provided volunteer service to the department and to those who have shown outstanding support to the department and to students with disabilities. They were honored with certificates of appreciation to celebrate the accomplishments. A spread of goodies was also provided by the Disability Services staff to those who received recognition, as well as their supervisors.

If you are already approved for accommodations with us, please contact your Disability Counselor as soon as you are registered to request your accommodation forms early. Getting your forms early is one less thing to worry about before the semester starts in January!

  • Reader/Scribes for Testing: Read questions out loud and/or write down the answers for students
  • Textbook-to-Audio Readers: Record your voice as you read textbook chapters and submit audio files
  • Tactile Graphics: Bring pictures to life by raising them off the page using everyday art supplies.

College Diabetes Network is starting a group this fall at CPCC

The College Diabetes Network (CDN) is coming to CPCC! CDN’s mission is to empower and improve the lives of students living with Type 1 Diabetes through peer support and access to information and resources. CDS’s vision is to create a college community, which will enable students with diabetes to thrive in all of their personal, healthcare, and scholastic accomplishments. A group will soon be meeting at Levine and Central campuses.
