Disability Services recognizes volunteers and supporters at the Disability Services Appreciation Reception

On December 13th, the first Disability Services Appreciation Reception was held to recognize those who provided volunteer service to the department and to those who have shown outstanding support to the department and to students with disabilities. They were honored with certificates of appreciation to celebrate the accomplishments. A spread of goodies was also provided by the Disability Services staff to those who received recognition, as well as their supervisors.

Getting your forms early is one less thing to worry about before the semester starts in January!

  • Reader/Scribes for Testing: Read questions out loud and/or write down the answers for students
  • Textbook-to-Audio Readers: Record your voice as you read textbook chapters and submit audio files
  • Tactile Graphics: Bring pictures to life by raising them off the page using everyday art supplies.

Schedule of Trainings:

9-10am: Pick a Disability
Purpose:
This session is designed to increase your confidence in your ability to work and interact with people with disabilities. It seeks to reduce fear and discomfort through the exploration of biases, myths, misperceptions, and stereotypes. It provides information on appropriate language and etiquette when interacting with people with disabilities.

10:30-11:30am: Traumatic Brain Injury
Purpose:
To increase awareness of the range and scope of this disability and explores accommodations.

NEW Accommodation Form Procedure Starting NOW for Fall 2016!

As of August 1, 2016 we are using a NEW version of the accommodation form. Now Instructors are asked to initial and date the forms to document when they were received. Please read below for more detailed instructions of the new procedure.

NEW Accommodation Form Procedure for the Fall 2016 Semester

  • Students must request their accommodation forms from their Disability Counselor each semester.
  • The student and the Disability Counselor sign all the forms.
  • Student delivers the forms to his/her Instructor(s).
  • The Instructor initials and dates the Instructor’s Copy and the Student’s Copy to verify when the form was received and that the accommodations were discussed with the student.
  • Once the Instructor receives and initials the forms, then the accommodations are considered active for that semester.
  • Instructor keeps the Instructor’s Copy.
  • Student keeps the Student’s Copy.
  • The student is also responsible for delivering a copy to the appropriate Testing Center if they are using it as an accommodation.
  • For online classes: Student will email the Instructor the accommodation forms, both the Student’s Copy and the Instructor’s Copy. Instructors are responsible for initialing both copies and returning the Student’s Copy to the student via email. Instructor keeps the Instructor’s Copy.

Additional things to know about accommodations:

  • Even if a student is approved to use accommodations, the student has the CHOICE whether or not they want to use the accommodations at any time.
  • Accommodations may not always apply, even if they are approved by Disability Services. In most cases they will apply, as along as the accommodation is reasonable for the class. If an instructor believes an accommodation is not reasonable for the class, the instructor should contact the Disability Counselor to discuss the concerns.
  • If a student requests to use an accommodation in class and they do not present an accommodation form to you, you are not required to accommodate the student. In that case, please refer the student to Disability Services.

This session is aimed at preparing students who are enrolling in the fall semester to help them learn how to request accommodations at CPCC and how to be a successful student at CPCC. Parents are also welcome to attend to learn how they can support their student as they transition into college. By attending you will:

  • Prepare yourself for fall semester
  • Learn the differences between high school and college
  • Learn how to request accommodations in college

Hello students! Finals week is upon us! Disability Services wishes you the best of luck as you take your final exams! If you need to schedule any final exam testing in the Disability Services Testing Center (it must be an approved accommodation) please contact dslab@cpcc.edu to schedule an appointment as soon as possible!

Registration is now open for summer and fall 2016 semesters. If you are approved for accommodations, please contact your Disability Counselor as soon as you are registered. We can now print accommodation forms early so you will be prepared in advance for your classes. If you need to request your forms from your Disability Counselor, call or email them directly. Congratulations on completing the first half of the spring semester! Now it’s time to relax and regroup during spring break!
