As America well knows, battles between the North and South are not uncommon, and the operatic world has its own North and South conflict. Only this conflict was born North and South of the Swiss Alps. The Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi and the German composer, Richard Wagner defined the Romantic Period of Opera. They were born in the same year, were both renowned composers during their lifetimes, and are both operatic legends; but that is where the similarities end. Join CPCC Opera Theatre as we battle it out between these two operatic greats!

Set in Pittsburgh in 1911, this drama by the author of The Piano Lesson and Fences is the story of the denizens of a boardinghouse who each have a different relationship to a past of slavery as well as to the urban present. The boarders include the proprietors, an eccentric clairvoyant with a penchant for old country voodoo, a young homeboy up from the South and a mysterious stranger who is searching for his wife.

Inon Barnatan has been hailed “a true poet of the keyboard: refined, searching, and unfailingly communicative.” His sincerity and expressiveness brings audiences into each phrase as if hearing them for the first time, rivaling his technical abilities and sensitive phrasing. Barnatan has been named the New York Philharmonic’s first Artist in Association, and has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras. Cellist Alisa Weilerstein’s passion, commitment and breathtaking technique combined with undeniable musicianship make her one of today’s most exciting artists. A 2011 MacArthur Fellowship recipient, she is also an exclusive recording artist for Decca Classics and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. CPCC's Dance Theatre

CPCC Dance Theatre members Christina Thomas and Javier Gonzalez have been selected as this year’s recipients of the CPCC Dance Theatre Patrice Burnside Award.  This prestigious award is presented in honor of former CPCC Dance Theatre member Patrice Burnside.

Patrice was the department’s original Clara in “The Nutcracker” and went on to become a principal dancer with CPCC Dance Theatre, while also performing with North Carolina Dance Theatre and the New York Theatre. Sadly, Patrice was killed in a tragic automobile accident.  This award was created in her memory and celebrates excellence in dance.  This is the first time in four years the award has been presented and Christina and Javier are being recognized for their work with CPCC Dance Theatre as well as other companies in Charlotte.

Congratulations Christina and Javier!
