Mecklenburg County residents who want to pursue a career as a salon professional can get the training they’ll need at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) starting in August.

CPCC will open a new two-year associate-degree program in cosmetology when the 2013-14 academic year begins in August. Students in the program will learn how to cut and color hair and perform facials, manicures and pedicures. Their training will prepare them to take the North Carolina state licensure exam for cosmetology. The cosmetology curriculum is an exclusive member school partnered with Pivot Point International which is based on the Scientific Approach to Hair Design.

In addition to the program’s core cosmetology courses, students will take a required small business management course. The business course is designed to help prepare program graduates who want to become the owners of their own salons.

The program will open with a maximum of 40 students and be based at CPCC’s City View Center, located on Alleghany Street, near Ashley Road. The facility will operate as a full-service salon open to the public. The salon will be open year-round. Clients will be encouraged to make appointments.

CPCC currently is renovating the City View Center, an extreme makeover to transform the space into a salon with 40 haircutting stations. The project, including design, construction, specialized equipment and furniture, will cost approximately $1 million.

There is an increasing demand for salon stylists and a desire to provide a high-quality, affordable program in Mecklenburg County prompted CPCC to establish the program.

“Labor projections forecast a growing need for salon professionals for the next several years,” explained Ruth Hedgpeth, CPCC associate dean, health programs and early childhood education. “At the same time, the college wants to provide career training opportunities in Mecklenburg County that are more affordable than many of the private and for-profit schools.”

A program director and up to six full-time instructors will teach and mentor students.

For more information , please contact Catherine Cunningham, program chair, at ext. 3220 or at catherine.cunningham@cpcc.edu.

The Central Campus will host the 2013 CMS Summer Institute June 19 through 28. Hundreds of CMS educators will be on-site to attend a series of trainings, lectures and guest speakers. As a result, there will be an increased number of cars on campus utilizing student and employee parking areas.

During this time, we ask CPCC employees and students allot more time to finding parking at Central Campus. And, as you go about your day, if you notice any CMS attendees who appear lost or confused, please serve as a positive ambassador for our College and offer them assistance.

Thank you!

Central Piedmont Community College will host its commencement ceremonies today. Almost 950 students are expected to “march” and receive their college degrees, high school diplomas and GEDs throughout the day’s festivities.

CPCC Graduation

During the College Graduation Ceremony later in the day, CPCC will graduate its largest class in its 50-year history. While 700 students plan to march during the 7 p.m. ceremony, more than 1,900 students were eligible to graduate this year. This is a significant increase from the 128 graduates the college had at its first commencement ceremony in 1964. (Participants at this ceremony were students who started programs at other institutions and finished at the newly-formed CPCC.)

Since CPCC holds only one graduation ceremony per year, 2012 summer and fall semester graduates will be participating in the college’s ceremonies as well.

Adult High School/GED/Pathways to Careers Graduation at 11 a.m.
The college will kick off its commencement exercises with its Adult High School, GED and Pathways to Careers student graduation ceremony. While more than 725 students from across Mecklenburg County were eligible to participate, only 250 are expected to “march” during the event. Mr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC, will be the guest speaker.

College Graduation Ceremony at 7 p.m.
Following the Adult High School and GED student graduation ceremony, CPCC’s undergraduate students will take the stage to receive their college degrees.

During the evening’s festivities, Allan C. Golston, president of the United States Program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will address this year’s graduates and CPCC will honor Alain S. Miatudila Sr. with the 2013 Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award and James R. Worrell Sr. with the Distinguished Service Award.
