College Senate President  2020-2021

College Senate has two candidates for President-elect.

The College Senate President represents the faculty and professional staff on numerous committees, college functions and deliberations.

The successful candidate will serve as president-elect during Jennifer Perkins’s presidency in 2019-20, and then as president during the 2020-21 academic year.

Faculty and professional staff are invited to attend a candidate forum held during the College Senate meeting on April 16, 2:30 pm at the Central Campus Heath Sciences Building, Room 4510.

Voting will commence on April 22 and end on April 28.

Michael  Statement: In my six years at Central Piedmont I have gathered a deep understanding of our academic culture and how its policies, in practice, affect the lives of the college community. During this time, my contributions have been focused on making a difference in the education of students who struggle financially, just as I struggled as an undergrad. My previous work as a teacher and an assistant professor was rewarding but I became frustrated with the disconnected academic policy created by disconnected administrators at those institutions. After teaching for several years and creating successful programs at various schools, I decided that I would bring my experience to the administrative side of education to influence the decisions made at that level.

It has become my mission to share my experiences and knowledge to help make connected and relevant decisions for our students and the college community as a whole. The current College Senate administration has done incredible work! I would like to continue their work by helping faculty and staff prepare for CPCC Cloud in 2021 as learning tools become virtual and accessible from anywhere. My goal is to help College Senate offer support for innovative learning environments and creative teaching that recognizes and rewards instructors for all they do for our students each and every day. Finally, with your vote, I hope to insure that faculty and staff are provided a safe and open space for communication with administration so their voice is heard. I hope I can count on your support. It would be a privilege and an honor to serve as the next Central Piedmont College Senate President.​

Bio:
This is my 9th academic year at CPCC. I came to CPCC in 2010 to work with the Transfer Resource Center, and as an adjunct faculty member in the Communication discipline. In 2012 i started working with Career Services. In 2016 I joined the Communication faculty full-time. My committee has included: Retention Committee, NC Scholars of Global Distinction Advisory Board, Technology Integration Learning Community, College Senate Faculty Welfare Committee and Faculty Titles Committee, and the General Education Foundation Council. I have also been a learning partner for new faculty in the faculty onboarding process, and delivered several professional development sessions for faculty and staff.

Sutkowski Statement: It would be an honor to serve faculty and staff as college senate president. Almost nine years of collaborating with students, faculty and staff in both student services and as a faculty member have given me skills and experiences to understand concerns, narrow down those concerns to specific actionable outcomes, and build consensus around solutions. As you consider supporting me, I want to share the approach and values that will shape my service to faculty and staff in this important role. I hope that by understanding my approach and values, you can see how I will work with you, and represent you. Listening closely with care, asking thoughtful open-ended questions, continual transparency, and careful reflection are important approaches to my work throughout my time at CPCC. These approaches are founded upon valuing every single voice, seeking accountability, and finding a yes.

Being ready to carefully listen, and valuing every voice is part of my everyday experience. Colleagues have come to know that I always answer the phone with, “How can I help?”. Sharing time with colleagues to deeply listen to and understand their concerns, ideas, and solutions is essential. Part of valuing all voices through active listening also means asking thoughtful questions. I approach every situation using questions to clarify background information, confirm accuracy, and determine possible solutions. Meaningful transparency is supported when questions are integrated into discussions.

Transparency builds trust and sustained accountability. I believe in transparency that makes sure everyone knows the same set of of information, and is regularly updated. When everyone is one the same page, both trust and accountability will be better served. It is with transparency that people are held accountable. It is also with transparency and reflection that I believe we can find a yes. Bringing together questions, and responses, with deeper reflection toward finding a yes is how I approach many issues. Finding a yes means reflection individually and an in groups toward building consensus wherever possible, and compromise whenever needed.

I hope you can see how I would work with you and represent you as college senate president. It would be my honor to serve staff and faculty in this role. I am also grateful to you for taking time to understand the approach and values that will shape my service.

Faculty Title Holders Recognized!

On Wednesday, March 27th, the Learning Unit recognized seven new CPCC faculty title holders with a luncheon in the Executive Dining Room of the Greenway Restaurant. CPCC culinary students prepared and served a first class meal to our recipients as well as the previous title holders who were on hand to congratulate them.

Please congratulate Professors Ann Aksut, Kenn Compton, Linda Dunham, Hugh Dussek, and George Wightman and Associate Professors Kent Cashion and Jennifer Perkins.

In addition to recognizing outstanding faculty members, this occasion also served as an opportunity to bid farewell to Deborah Bouton who has served as a liaison between the faculty titles committee and upper level administration for many years. Debbie was presented with a title of Honorary Professor and a small gift at this meeting as well.

Thank you to all who organized and attended the lunch, especially Vivian Jenkins planner extraordinaire.

The Professional Staff Welfare Committee invites Professional Staff to join us at the 2018 Professional Staff Fall Forum.

2017-18 Outstanding Senator Award presented to Lauren Estes

Congratulations to Lauren Estes, 2017-18 Outstanding Senator!

At the May 2018 College Senate Meeting, Richard Zollinger presented the Outstanding Senator Award to Lauren Estes.

Lauren serves on the Professional Welfare Committee and chairs the Student Welfare Committee. She demonstrates passion and leadership in every meeting she attends, whether she is speaking out about student issues or employee issues. Lauren has proposed multiple initiatives for both committees with the intention of improving the welfare of professional staff and students. She understands the needs of students as a result of her role in the College, and brings the student’s perspective to the table when College issues are being discussed. Congratulations to Lauren!

I started my career back in 1995 as an elementary school teacher soon after earning my Master’s degree from Queen’s University. From the start of my teaching career, I knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of my students for the rest of my career. To this day, I love teaching students and enabling them to be proactive learners and advocates in their education.

In 2004, I started teaching developmental English courses for CPCC, and shortly thereafter, I joined the ACA department. I worked as an adjunct instructor for six years before I was hired to teach full time in the fall of 2010 as an ACA instructor. I have always considered myself fortunate as I get to teach students to be successful whether that be through a college student success course or a study skills course or a transfer success course. My job is literally to help students to be successful in the college classroom and in life itself.

Now, I am even more excited to offer my expertise to my fellow faculty members through professional development. In my current position, I am able to facilitate learning opportunities for faculty and staff here at CPCC. As a peer developer with the professional development department, I mentor new faculty members at the college, facilitate new faculty training on a monthly basis, coordinate and schedule Focus Friday events for all faculty and staff at the college, and provide ongoing training as needed at all six campuses.

: Over the years, I have worked closely with adjunct faculty and full time faculty with bi-annual training sessions at the start of every semester. As well as training faculty for ACA, I have also worked to train and prepare summer bridge instructors each year to work with our incoming summer bridge students. I have served on the scholarship committee, summer bridge committee, college senate, curriculum committee, completion by design, IT committee, institutional effectiveness committee, and the communications team. My willingness to work and serve this college is abundant from the shear fact I thoroughly enjoy making a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff. Serving as college senate president would only enhance my work here at the college to that next level of leadership. I would be honored by the opportunity to serve and make a difference here at Central Piedmont Community College.

Emetu  Statement: My desire to be College Senate President stems from my passion in being an educator and the difference that I strive to make in the lives of our students. I desire to lead the efforts in maintaining an efficient, productive and nourishing learning environment for our students and a collaborative workplace for the faculty and professional staff that teach and support them. As president, I will work tirelessly to foster productive communication between faculty, administration, and other entities in efforts to accomplish the common goal of serving our students and community. Additionally, I will commit diligent efforts on a continuous basis to ensure that the concerns of faculty and professional staff are heard and voiced to the appropriate entities as well as maintain effective communication with the faculty and professional staff of CPCC.

While in pursuit of a doctoral degree over the course of the past few years, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and understanding about the inner workings of community colleges and ways in which internal components work together to achieve maximum efficiency. My current research seeks to define the most effective policies and implementation strategies needed to serve diversity within the college environment. Moreover, the knowledge and understanding gained from my studies and research will be very beneficial in my efforts to serve a diverse group of people with distinct needs and concerns.

Bio: 
Greetings colleagues! I have had the pleasure of shaping lives here at CPCC since 2012 by teaching in the Associates of Engineering and eventually Chairing Computer, Electrical, and Electronics Engineering Technology departments.  I think we share in having one of the most rewarding jobs in the world by helping students. I want to help make sure we are as effective as possible in what we do.
Problem solving is in my nature and training; I have been busy creating solutions to problems we all might face. Already in my division I was instrumental in starting up our FabLab, and led my three departments through their accreditation process from our relevant accrediting body. For accreditation I designed and implemented a process that can be used to help other departments and even CPCC itself maintain accreditation.

I have also been working with Section Modification to create tools which make COD calculation and entry faster, easier, less error-prone, and less of a headache in general.  We have already piloted this tool in the Engineering Technology division this semester and I’ve shared the beta test with a few other departments to great success.  I plan to continue finding ways to help us all work smarter and be more effective.

Harris Statement: 
As president of College Senate, my goals are to:
*Reduce redundancy and latency in current process.
*Leverage the brainpower, talents, and skills of our faculty and staff to create tools and
processes that reduce complications and uncertainty for students in our programs.
*Lead the charge on issues that are important to you and bringing those to the attention     of  the Administration.
*Keep faculty and staff engaged in College Senate
*My long-term goals are to build CPCC into such an effective organization that we win an     Aspen Award.
