What’s Love Got To Do With It? Cato Campus Library and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

  • Domestic violence comes in many forms. Be it physical, mental, or emotional: abuse is in no way an act of love.
  • Furthermore, national statistics show that, in the US, an act of assault or violence is committed against a woman, every nine seconds, and that an act of physical abuse is committed on an average of 20 people every minute by a partner (National Statistics Domestic Violence Fact Sheet).

Domestic Violence Awareness

  • Understanding the signs of domestic violence is one effective way by which to bring awareness to the issue as well as finding a solution.
  • Speaking with domestic abuse counselors and members of law enforcement is also another way to learn more about patterns of abuse and abusive behavior.
  • Researching current literature can also prove beneficial in a case where more in-depth knowledge is required beyond what is considered common or general.

Protection Against Domestic Violence

  • The Violence Against Women Act is a law that was passed by Congress in 1994- including a 1996 addendum- which:
  1. Mandates that domestic violence is a national crime.
  2. Provides nationwide protection for abuse victims as well as monetary compensation for any incurred losses (Federal Domestic Violence Laws, United States Department of Justice).

Cato Library Banned Books Week!

Join the Cato Campus Library as we celebrate Banned Books Week and your freedom to read!

When:  Sept 25 – Oct 1, 2016

Where: Cato Campus Library, CT 315 Building III

Banned Books, the First Amendment, and the ALA!

Aside from the freedom of speech, religion, the press, and peaceable assembly, the First Amendment also protects, the freedom of expression of thoughts, ideas, and opinions, and if not for institutions like the library, many of these thoughts, ideas, and opinions would go virtually unnoticed.

From a historical standpoint, the library has been a staunch supporter of public enlightenment and the freedom of open access- all of which present as challenges to censorship.

Within this context, organizations like the ALA (American Library Association) have worked to uphold the First Amendment and the provisions that it provides.

Founded in 1876, the ALA  has long played a key role in promoting intellectual freedom, literacy, and education, and it is for this reason and many others, that the Cato Campus Library along with the ALA is supporting your right to freely create, publish, and read–by celebrating Banned Books Week.

For more information on the event and a list of banned books: go to

Stop by the Cato Campus Library to view our own Banned Books Display!
